Deep Purplish/Steppenwolfy with a pinch of Queen and a dash of 3 Dog Night

This original reflects my 70's progressive rock influences.  I was going to post this earlier, but Bob Oister posted posted his great tune "Bulletproof Heart" just as I was about to, so I waited until now to put it up..........All comments and questions welcome...........The song is titled "Bulletproof".

Two canine influences? Stepen"Wolf" and 3 "Dog" night. If feels like it could be fatter during the verse. And that high lead, I'd like to hear it move a bit more. The break was imaginative, I wish I could write more songs with something that changes radically in the middle.

The drums aren't too loud but could use a bit more eq'ing to take out a bit of the punch. I'm listening on Yamaha HS-80m's and normally they under-emphasize the low end.

The backups are outstanding. Great song.

Definitely channeling those classic rock influences. Interesting bass tone, at least on these speakers, it's punchy and round and fat at the same time, and balances the guitars nicely.

I know that bass patch very well...You have more patience than me. I always used to get so pissed that it doesn't sound real at all. But in this it doesn't sound too bad.

Great vocal. Good organ work. fairly interesting song. I think the drums need beefing. Not sure how much better they can be made in the mix of if it's a patch issue. Either way, decent tune.

The mix caught my attention first thing.  Very good!  I would take a bit of reverb off of the main vocal but that's a personal preference.  It seems to sit too far out "in front" of the instruments.

I like the genre and vibes from the tune.

rockinrobby,.........canine influences?  Yep, and hopefully this old dog can still learn some new tricks.  I was shooting for a big dynamic change from verse to chorus, maybe too much?  The high lead sort of echoes the chorus melody and all the guitars are midi.  Thanks for the "imaginative" on the break.  I always loved the Beatles "middle eight" and try for a big change-up.  I appreciate your listen. I always look forward to your new tunes...........Ron

Nice tune, good vocal performance. Great 70's vibe. This could indeed be a great Purplish tune - you've got the right organ tone going, now just crank it up!

Some compression on the drums might help beef them up. Given the genre, I wouldn't be afraid to add a little ambient room reverb to them as well. What's the drum synth? It sounds like the TTS-1.

Hey Bub,  thanks for listening, I mixed this through my new M-Audio av40's(the first time I've used them)in my motel room(traveling salesman).  They sound great for starting at 80hz. I sang all voices so I appreciate your thumbs up. I wrote this song in '96 but could never get it together until now, shame on me...............Ron

Mr. droddey, the bass is almost equal parts TTS-1 "Acoustic bass" and "Slap bass 1" layered, no eq, velocity midi compressed to 120, straight to master. Thanks for checking it out.....................Ron

    Hi Ron,

Cool tune. You've got a real good voice. Love the wide vibrato.

You've also got the 70's vibe down.

When I first started listening I could definitely hear the  Deep  Purple
influence but kept wondering '3 Dog Night'? Not really hearing THAT...

Then the middle section came in and BOOM there was the 'Dog'...nicely done!

Hello Joshua, I've listened to your tunes.  I think you are a very accomplished singer so I'm honored by your compliment. The drums are TTS-1(all I have at the time). I'm thinking on the Session 2 download. I'll try to beef them up a bit.  Thanks for taking time to review my tune..................Ron

    Hey, Ron,

How's it going, buddy?  Doing great, I hope!

Killer job on this great progressive rocker!  Nice clean mix, excellent performances on all the instruments and really dynamite vocals and harmonies that are perfect for the genre.

I'm definitely also getting a cool Deep Purple/Steppenwolf vibe with possibly a little ELP or Uriah Heep thrown in for good measure!  I love the nice changeup around the three minute mark, really great work on the arrangement.

Thanks for the kind comment about my song, I still feel bad that you ended up holding your song post up because of our similar song titles.

Anyway, excellent work on this very cool song, job well done, have a good one!

really enjoyed this work...your vox work is very good and convincing to be sure...there's a lil key part (sounds like a whistle) that follows the vox in the chours that kinda doesn't work for me..it takes my attention away from the tune so to speak...(hi-notes tend to do that for me) so I'd pull that back a bit..

being  an ole fart I can relate to the bands you mention and you nailed it in that vein.

I really enjoyed the tune and the mix sounded good here on me 'puter speakers...

    good job and keep rockin!

    • Bob, thanks for the positive feedback. I think your work is top notch and consider your input very helpful. I have fun with this style and used to try to write original songs that would compete back to back with prog rock hits that my copy bands would perform. I learned a lot from that practice, and I still enjoy this genre. No sweat on the "Bulletproof" posting delay. Maybe its true that "great minds think alike".........LOL............Ron.
    • Hey String Jammer, never thought about the "Styx vocal delivery" but they are one of my favorites, so thank you sir. I find your music original and interesting. Thanks for the good words............................Ron

The high part you describe is TTS-1 "overdrive guitar" but I just bought the Realstrat and am going to plug it in. So glad you enjoyed the tune.............Ron

Really cool. Ron. But I think you forgot Zappa in it's influences. Your voice and singing style remind me of him a lot.

this is one cool song, all your influences have been mentioned, and all the salient mix/recording sounds been discussed. one thing i would say, try putting the organ, bass and guitar synths thru a guitar sim; there are many excellent free ones available, such as Freeamp 3, Voxengo Boogex and especially the Acmebargig/lepou plug ins. this will give you a bit more reality and organicness to the sounds. excellent vocals dude.

    • Greetings Clifford, thanks for your time and the good words. I hope it sounds good on your MSP-5s. I just got some new monitors and they sure make a difference.
    • Herb,I am very impressed by your work and your expertise on this forum. You are always there to help, no matter how big or small the subject is. Your advice has had great effect on my progress with my tunes. I also "like those old riff based songs of yesteryear".  Muchas Gracias & Via con Dios amigo...........Ron
