"Deepest" lyrics?

IMO, Echoes is pretty darn deep in places.  Got a favorite?

"Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves in labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant tide
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine

And no one showed us to the land
And no one knows the wheres or whys
But something stirs and something tries
And starts to climb towards the light

Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can
And no one calls us to move on
And no one forces down our eyes
No one speaks
And no one tries
No one flies around the sun

Cloudless every day you fall upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me to rise
And through the window in the wall
Come streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning

And no one sings me lullabies
And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky."

Re: "Deepest" lyrics? 2016/03/11 12:15:48 (permalink)
Hi,

Depends on the context.

I like Amon Duul 2's lyrics ... "Apocalyptic Bore", the stuff in "Wolf City", and the earlier stuff in "Dance of the Lemmings" and "Yeti" ... in that most of these are actually pure magic theater stuff and in essence totally psychedelic, but not written to look cool, but to be much more literary than that ... "Apocalyptic Bore", for example, is as much about the joke that Star Wars became, as it is about the commune excitement coming to an end ... or a fantasy, that no longer meant anything for anyone but the idea itself.

After that ... Peter Hammill ... has the best lyrics, although most people don't always like him, because he can sound very difficult, when he screams, talks and sings on the same sentence in many pieces of his ... but to say that "Godbluff" or "Still Life". or "Silent Corner, Empty Space", or "Out of Water" ... material is blank is crazy ... he's as good a lyricist as there is, and one can even hear things that at first listen sound strange and in the end ... they aren't .. check out "A Way Out", if you have enough love in your heart! It's so true it's scary!

While it is customary to think that Beatles, Dylan, and others wrote the book on meaningful lyrics, in many ways there are others with a more interesting take on lyrics and the variable literary view on them ... which in america is a joke ... and it is specially so for folks that do not know what the lyrics are about, and they are too lazy to go find out ... well, in some cases, it may take a life time ... but what the heck ... Bapu is excused, but only gets a B for the mention! Close to the Edge is much better for Bapu, I'm guessing. But he is not the only person not enjoying the lyrics in TFTO, either! I don't get the lyrics in the Tibetan Bardo,, either! Or the Egyptian Book of the Dead!

Rock music lyrics is more the literature of our time ... than any actual literary content ... and that has to do with people's loss of the ability to read things and maybe even study some of them ... rock music, while excellent in many ways, due to the top ten thing, is trying hard to dissolve "meaning" and "deep" from most works ... and until that generation finds out that it can have many different levels, the ability to appreciate the depth of just about anything is not quite as arbitrary as we think ... but saying Neil Young is vacuous would also be incorrect, for example ... "Ohio" is deadly serious and we have a tendency to deny him the pure truth of those words ... because we want songs, not meanings!

And to me that is the problem. A song has to be something that you can enjoy drunk and not have to worry about it meaning anything ... so yeah ... some songs  are just that ... songs!

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

I love songs and well-crafted lyrics. Had a good think about this and I'll go with a recent one by Mark Knopfler. He used to be a journalist and has a real feel for a 'story' song. This one bits the bill because it tells of when he worked on a paper and met the poet Basil Bunting.

My Saturday job pays six and six down
A copy boy at the Chronicle
Five cigarettes and two silver half crowns
Meeting Vince at Mark Toney's in town
Boy, do we get around
Basil sits there on the table for subs
But not a part of the Bri-nylon club
Ancient blue sweater, too old for the job
Bored out of his mind
With the Colins and Bobs
I'm a jack and a lad
And I'm up for the world
And I've kissed a Gateshead girl
He calls for a copy boy, grumpy as hell
Poets have to eat as well
What he wouldn't give just to walk out today
To have time to think about time
And young love thrown away
I'm a jack and a lad
And I'm up for the world
And I've kissed a Gateshead girl
Starlings swarming
A cloud over Grainger Street
Over the black church
Over the Black Gate
And the shadowy Keep
He peers through his wire rims
At the fish and chip words
He's supposed to dish up and forget
His drudgery now has become slightly blurred
By one of his Players untipped cigarettes
Bury all joy
Put the poems in sacks
And bury me here with the hacks
In the summer the fair
Will stretch over the Moor
Lovers will lie and make out in the park
Basil puts on his old duffel and scarf
And goes out into the dark

Knopfler discusses the song here at about 9mins in;

Re: "Deepest" lyrics? 2016/03/11 14:12:22 (permalink)
Nice.  I think for story songs Harry Chapin is hard to beat.

A Better Place To Be
It was an early morning bar room
And the place just opened up
And the little man come in so fast and it
Started at his cups

And the broad who served the whiskey
She was a big old friendly girl
And tried to fight her empty nights
By smilin' at the world

And she said "Hey Bub, It's been awhile
Since you been around
Where the hell you been hidin'?
And why you look so down ?

The little man just sat there like he'd never heard a sound
The waitress she gave out with a cough
Acting not the least put off
She spoke once again

She said, "I don't want to bother you
Consider it's understood
I know I'm not no beauty queen
But I sure can listen good"

And the little man took his drink in his hand
And he raised it to his lips
He took a couple of sips
And he told that waitress this story

I am the midnight watchman down at Miller's Tool and Die
And I watch the metal rusting, I watch the time go by
A week ago at the Diner, I stopped to get a bite
And this here lovely lady she sat two seats from my right
And Lord, Lord, Lord
She was alright

You see, she was so damned beautiful she could warm a winter's frost
But she looked long past lonely, and well nigh kinda lost
Now I'm not much of a mover or a pick-em-up easy guy
But I decided to glide on over and give her one good try
And Lord, Lord, Lord
She was worth a try

And I was tongued-tied like a school boy
I stammered out some words
It did not seem to matter much 'cause I don't think she heard
She just looked clear on through me to a space back in my head
And it shamed me into silence, as quietly she said

'If you want me to come with you that's all right with me
'Cause I know I'm going nowhere and anywhere's a better place to be
Anywhere's a better place to be'

When I drove her to my boarding house and I took her up to my room
And I went to turn on the only light to brighten up the gloom
But she said, "Please leave the light off, oh, I don't mind the dark"
And as her clothes all tumbled 'round her, I could hear my heart

The moonlight shown upon her as she lay back in my bed
It was the kind of scene I only had imagined in my head
I just could not believe it, to think that she was real
And as I tried to tell her she said, "I know just how you feel

And if you want to come here with me that's all right with me
'Cause I've been oh so lonely, lovin' someone is a better way to be
Anywhere's a better way to be"

When the morning came so swiftly I held her in my arms
She slept like a baby, snug and safe from harm
I did not want to share her or dare to break the mood
So before she woke I went out to buy us both some food
I came back with my paper bag to find that she was gone
She'd left a six word letter saying, 'It's time that I moved on'

You know the waitress took her bar rag
And she wiped it across her eyes
And as she spoke her voice came out as something like a sigh
She said, "I wish that I was beautiful or that you were halfway blind
And I wish I weren't so goddamned fat, I wish that you were mine
And I wish that you'd come with me when I leave for home
For we both know all about emptiness and livin' all alone"

And the little man
Looked at the empty glass in his hand
And he smiled a crooked grin
He said, "I guess I'm out of gin
And I know we both have been so lonely

And if you want me to come with you that's all right with me
'Cause I know I'm goin' nowhere and anywhere's a better place to be'"

I very much doubt that, seeing as it was recorded 3 years before Star Wars was even released.

That it can have applicability to events/ideas AFTER its release is a testament to its abstract beauty.  I find this timelessness in a lot of songs that seem to have been written about specific events, yet can apply more broadly for as long as we care to contemplate the *feelings* that fueled their creation.

Yes, another Floyd tune (Gilmour era), but I find timeless applicability in "A Great Day For Freedom", which contains one of my all-time favorite lyrical snippet; the last two lines.  That those lines provide the lead-in to one of the most soulful guitar solos I can recall might have something to do with appreciation of them.  There are several tracks on The Division Bell that have equally compelling lines.

"A Great Day For Freedom"

On the day the wall came down
They threw the locks onto the ground
And with glasses high we raised a cry for freedom had arrived
On the day the wall came down
The Ship of Fools had finally ran aground
Promises lit up the night like paper doves in flight

I dreamed you had left my side
No warmth, not even pride remained
And even though you needed me
It was clear that I could not do a thing for you

Now life devalues day by day
As friends and neighbors turn away
And there's a change that, even with regret, cannot be undone
Now frontiers shift like desert sands
While nations wash their bloodied hands
Of loyalty, of history, in shades of grey

I woke to the sound of drums
The music played, the morning sun streamed in
I turned and I looked at you
And all but the bitter residues slipped away...slipped away

How strong must the contempt be that looking at someone you once loved causes all fondness to disappear in the bitterness?

If you had been married to my ex, you would understand

Another Division Bell tune with a sublime wrap-up:

"Lost For Words"

I was spending my time in the doldrums
I was caught in the cauldron of hate
I felt persecuted and paralyzed
I thought that everything else would just wait
While you are wasting your time on your enemies
Engulfed in a fever of spite
Beyond your tunnel vision reality fades
Like shadows into the night

To martyr yourself to caution
Is not going to help at all
Because there'll be no safety in numbers
When the Right One walks out of the door

Can you see your days blighted by darkness?
Is it true you beat your fists on the floor?
Stuck in a world of isolation
While the ivy grows over the door

So I open my door to my enemies
And I ask could we wipe the slate clean
But they tell me to please go **** myself
You know you just can't win

Welp...most attempts at "deep" lyrics are pretentious at best and sophomoric at worst. Dylan hit some good licks fairly consistently but one would be hard pressed to top the consicion, simplicity and universality of Randy Newman. While almost any of his his songs can be a primer in both song craft and art, I'll leave you with this lyric which is both evocative and deadly accurate as well as sociologically telling:

"You looked like a princess the night we met
With your hair piled up high, I will never forget
I'm drunk right now baby, but I've got to be
Or I never could tell you what you mean to me
But I loved you the first time I saw you
And I always will love you Marie"

Still makes me tear up every time I hear it. Dern his hide.

Ok, another Knopfler, sorry . I liked this song for a long time before I figured out what it was about. Had to Google 'Ray Kroc', then it all makes sense. Amazes me how he could take an idea like that and fit it into such a cool catchy song.

Going to San Bernardino, ring-a-ding-ding
Milkshake mix, yes that's my thing now
These guys bought a heap 'o my stuff
And I gotta see a good thing sure enough now
Or my name is not Kroc, it's Kroc with a K
Like crocodile, but not spelt that way, now
It's dog eat dog, rat eat rat
Kroc style, boom like that
Folks line up all down the street
I am seeing this girl devour her meat now
And then I get it, wham as clear as day
My pulse begins to hammer and I hear a voice say
These boys have got this down
Ought to be one of these in every town
These boys have got the touch
It's clean as a whistle and it don't cost much
Wham bam, don't wait long
Shake fries patty, you're gone
And how about that friendly name
Heck, every little thing gotta stay the same
Or my name is not Kroc, that's Kroc with a K
Like crocodile, but not spelt that way, now
It's dog eat dog, rat eat rat
Dog eat dog, rat eat rat
It's dog eat dog, rat eat rat
Kroc style, boom like that
You gentlemen ought to expand
You're gonna need a helping hand now
So gentlemen, well, what about me?
We'll make a little business history now
Or my name is not Kroc, call me Ray
Like crocodile, but not spelt that way, now
It's dog eat dog, rat eat rat
Kroc style, boom like that
Well, we build it up and I buy 'em out
But man they made me grind it out now
They open up a new place flippin' meat
So I do too, right across the street
I got the name, I need the town
They sell up in the end and it all shuts down
Sometimes you gotta be an S.O.B.
You wanna make a dream reality
Competition send 'em south
If they're gonna drown put a hose in their mouth
Do not pass, go straight to hell
I smell that meat hook smell
Or my name is not Kroc that's Kroc with a K
Like crocodile, but not spelt that way, now
Ohh, it's dog eat dog, rat eat rat
Dog eat dog, rat eat rat now
Ohh, it's dog eat dog, rat eat rat
Kroc style, boom like that

The lyrics in "Passion Play" are excellent ... but they are very tough and actually very pointed, and not exactly the kind of stuff that radio likes to play, which is mostly blahhh stuff, with an occasion song, that will survive in there, meaning a lot more than otherwise.

Apocalyptic Bore - Amon Duul 2 -

One day, when suddenly by fortune
We saw the U.F.O.'s fly
They brought us the so-called paradise
They were spooking from the sky
Desert became a blooming garden
Like a dainty recreation field
Everybody's keenest dreams came true
Even gigantomaniacs were thrilled

Frogmen lifted treasures
Everybody got their parts
It was a worldwide pleasure
We all landed in the charts

No horse that didn't win the race
They found their destination
As if they were shot through the space
It was a big sensation...

My neighbor lived in the middle ages
His castle was cheaply rented
Everybody now could explore the past
'Cause the time-continuum-robot was invented
And then as skywriters signalized
Their majesties the extraterrestians
And when they came down in sparkling haze
We called them the space-pedestrians
There seemed to be happiness for eternity
Mankind scored more and more
Until one day the young growing up generation
Called this age an apocalyptic bore

There was nothing to fight for – no love no hate –
Only a quivering in the air
Kids had taken all their skybikes
And were leaving for the Big Bear
Dark shadows burst through the universe
Mother earth was really shocked
All hopes all dreams had disappeared
All ways, all minds were locked

(And the song goes into an amazing guitar/violin duet ... which SCORPIONS copied with the title song to "Fly To The Rainbow" ... and Scorps' song was about having fun, though I can not remember the lyrics for it right now.)

(Sadly, this song by AD2, also stated that the band was over, in terms of quality and design. They could never create anything else as strong after that, and the rest of the album was what could be considered a bunch of singles. They still had good stuff, but none with the power and presence of the earlier material. Witness "Mozambique" ... )

Peter Hammill - A Way Out

Out of joint, out of true, out of love,
Out of the blue, out of order, out of orbit,
Out of control,
Out of touch, out of line, out of sync
And out of time, out of gas, out of tread,
Out of road.
Out of date, out of stock, out of use -
Out, out dammed spot!
You want out, you want out of it for good.
Out of the running, out of the game,
Out on your feet, clear out of range,
Out of context, out of contact,
Out of the woods.
Out, out, looking for a way out,
No straws are left to cling to;
Out, out, going for the fade-out...
but what do you fade into?
Out on the town, out for laughs,
Out of service, out to grass,
Out of mourning, our of purdah,
Out of bail,
Out of kilter, out grace,
Out to get out of this place,
Out of this world, out and out
Beyond the plae.
Right out of character, out of sympathy,
So far out upon a limb
you're out of your tree....
Out of breath, out of tune, out of your head
And out of view, down and out,
Out for the count, or is it just for revenge?
Out of sight, out of mind, leave it out,
Leave it behind out of reach
Of all family, all friends
Out, out, going for the bale-out,
No parachute above you.
Out, out, you'll not feel the fall-out
...I wish I'd said "I love you

SW came out later, but the "fad" of the space thing, that had started way earlier, was already coming to an end in 1972 and 1973, and it was even considered stupid ... by the time that the Bee Gees did their thing. But it was the same for me, with SW, when in the 2nd film, the spiritual side of things got removed and replaced with wires ... in other words, no longer human, and separating the inner thing from the outer person, for me!

Peter's song, sounds kinda crazy, and yet, it is a love ballad ... and the end line is an absolutely stunning end to the song ... and we all can always look back ... yep ... I did that! It's a tough thing to live with sometimes for many people, but I'm not sure that a "youthful mind" can think beyond the moment as much as the older mind can! So that makes the song even stronger.

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

You forgot "Hi," - I have a Chrome add-on that looks for this and turns on a TL;DR filter.

Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!
