Delay in sound?

Hi, I'm new to the forum and new to the Cakewalk Music Creator programs and am very excited about getting started. I recently updated my sound card to a Audiophile 192 with Windows XP O/S. My problem is when I have a guitar plugged in I get great sound but I get a 1 second delay on the output. My friend told me to look for low latency settings but can't seem to find them and don't know what else to do. Is there a fix for this problem or am I in a bad situation?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Options/audio/find the buffering settings and the buffer slider and adjust them until it works, also what version are you using?, you might need to upgrade to MC pro to use the ASIO drivers, althought i get real good latency setting with WDM drivers, but i have to use softsynth then to reproduce midi sounds

I have version 2. I was hoping to avoid having to purchase any other software or components to get this to work. I'll give that a shot tonight and let you know how I did. I thank you for your response. Also, forgive my computer ignorance but what is ASIO?
BTW, I checked out your tunes as I was browsing the forum and they sound great. Those were all done using the Music Creator huh? I cant wait to get this fine tuned so I can get going.

Thanks for the listen, actually not all were done using MC, i have other software that i use depending on what i am doing, MC figured in on about two on that site. ASIO is a driver version that many programs use, version 2 does not it uses either the old MME or the new WDM drivers for audio, MME will give you a built in midi synth, but is slower and has more latency issues, WDM is faster and less Latency (lag between the synth being triggered and making a sound) Also with WDM you will have to use softsynths to make midi sounds, The latency yoiu are experiencing is audio latency a different animal from mid and synth latency. One thing you can try is to turn off input monitoring (options/audio/input monitoring unhighlight anything in the white box) this will make it difficult to hear what you are doing unless you minitor thru a mixer board like many of us do, i have a behringer 802 and plug my headphones in there, but those run around $60

You know, I'm reading back my first post and I did neglect to say that it only happens during recording. Will that make any difference in the settings you mentioned?

No that is where is happens, as you are recording the sound is being converted by the sound card from analog to digital, then processed thru the system and then converted from digital back to analog by the sound card to be heard, that take time depending on the buffering settings and such. Also the input monitoring is "monitoring what is being inputted, and that can cause a delay. that is why most eventuall get an outboard mixer or an sound car interface to use so that recording and monitoring are happening at the source rather than internally.

That worked! I changed the setting to WDM and the buffer number down a few clicks to experiment and it seems to record on time now. Thanks for the help. I'm sure to have many more dopey problems that will require you experience.
