Delay plugins

Hello All. For a while now i've been thinking about a new delay plugin and it's just about getting to be crunch time. Echoboy seems to very well liked and i probly wouldve just jumped right on that, but it requires iLok and is not x64 afaik. Timeless2 looks like a nice choice. Massey offers what looks to be a very nice delay as well. A tap-tempo feature would be very convenient. What do you guys like nowadays? Thanks for your suggestions.

My go to delays at the moment are Nomad Factory Echoes, PSP Echo (as well as 608 & 42) and Rob Papen  RP Delay. I also use but less regularly UAD Space echo, Nomad Factory Oil Can Echo.
All work fine in 64 bit Sonar X1 (I do have X2 but have stopped using for the time being due to the graphic display issues and some other stuff that needs working out)

I forgot the one I just purchased - Masque from XILS Labs - pretty funky and am just getting into this - very different type of delay

Echoboy is indeed great but the limitations you mention are also true.  I'd go with FabFilter Timeless 2.

I demoed Timeless2 and passed on it, despite otherwise being a huge FabFilter fan. Though incredibly versatile, it didn't seem like the best solution for the 99% of my delay applications where I just want a simple, quick echo effect with a little filtering on it. Honestly, the Sonitus Delay is more than adequate for my needs and would be ideal if a) it didn't have longstanding (probably permanent) bugs and b) had a true mono mode.

Echo Boy is a nice balance of simplicity and versatility, and would have probably been added to my toolkit long ago if not for the iLok requirement.

Have a look at Ricochet from Audio Damage. It makes no attempt to emulate any "classic" wobbly muffled tape echoes, but it's still quite versatile, has a well-designed UI and is only fifty bucks. Compared to Echo Boy, that would leave you enough change to pick up UberMod for the weird stuff, plus a nice dinner.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

If you like Timeless 2 and can hold on a few weeks, FabFilter will probably have a year-end bundle sale in which you could pick up three effects, one of them being Timeless 2, plus the Twin 2 synth for $300.  Because this bundle now includes the Saturn distortion effect, this is a particulary good deal if it's within your budget.

Timeless 2 can do the simple or the complex delays, and has many presets for both categories. Listen to some of the demos. It would be nice to get it in a sale bundle with Saturn.  I have both from such a sale not long ago. I'm not sure I've found all of what I'm looking for with Timeless, really. I've not yet fully delved into all that it might have to offer me. But it is nevertheless very useful and creative- and more.

Thanks for the replies. I glanced at some of the delays that you all suggested and they all seem to be quality plugins. Got a bit of reading to do now. Are there any good delay plugs with tap tempo? Thanks agian.

+ 1 for Timeless 2--the standard.  But also take a look at Valhalla Ubermod; for $50 it is cool, very trippy, can't remember if it has tap.

If, like Bit, you just need meat and potatoes stuff...Nomad Echoes is way good.  Still think Timeless 2 is the best tho.

I need a delay primarily for vocals and guitars. After watching the Timeless 2 vid, it seems like a lot more control than i require. I looked at Waves Super Tap and looks like it could be worth checking out, although it's kinda an old plug tho... Echoes looks great, wish it had tap tempo.

A little different choice would be Audio Damage's Discord 3. It is far from a simple delay though.

I primarily use EchoBoy and would highly recommend it (as well as the entire native bundle), but a really nice alternative that I think would suit your needs is the Waves H-Delay.  It's got a very straightforward interface and workflow, but there's a ton of useful range in those dials.  I own Timeless 2 and SuperTap as well and they're noth very good, but EchoBoy and H-Delay are my go-tos.

It is an older plug-in but it's still a good delay, imho.

My own tastes aren't too fancy. When I worked w/ Sonar, I'd rely on the Sonitus one a lot. Others I used regularly were the free e-phonic plug-ins, Retrodelay and Tape Delay, which both sounded very retro as the names imply.

I once had the opportunity to record my guitar through the good old PSP 84. I don't think I could ever re-create the results otherwise. I think of it more as a special effect than a basic delay, but I need that one.

On the Mac, I'm usually happy w/ Logic's own Tape Delay (which I missed a lot while I was on PC). I also use Waves Super Tap quite regularly. I'm pretty happy w/ those two.

I also own Rob Papen's delay, which probably is a tweaker's delight but I never use it, unless I'm stuck and looking for weird sounds.

I have to admit I've been using guitar rig delays for a while now. GR5 Pro has many different flavours from tape sims to digital. Too bad I have to load GR5 to just use a delay, but's they're there and it seems like a waste no to use them.

I've been using the H Delay from Waves and it is pretty awesome.  I still go to the voxengo delay that came with the Analog Suite, can't remember the name, but is is a cool vintage delay.
