Delay when recording new trracks

When I record new audio tracks I have a slight delay from the previously recorded tracks. I can kill the volume from the PC and follow the timing from my keyboard, but after converting everything to audio tracks, I can no longer follow anything from the MIDI tracks(cause it ain't there no more.) Anyone know why this delay is caused becaue it makes it virtually impossible to record "in time" when I can't follow a beat? I am using my HP laptop with 1.0 Gig processor, 512 of memory, so I don't think power is the problem. MIDI syncs work fine, but recording directly to audio has the problem.

Thanks for all the great tips out there.

Run the 'Wave Profiler' again. Its under 'audio Options'.

Also try adjusting the 'latency' if the wave profiler doesn't improve matters.

Hey music....lowering the latency did fix my delay problem. Had to pretty much
slide it all the way down.

    What does that mean?

But, also, after lowering, I got so much distortion, it's a shame, plus it recorded
right onto an audio track, while recording frrom midi. Not sure, gotta recheck
all my sliders to ensure I'm not getting feedbacks something.

Don't really understand 'latency' myself. I just ran 'Wave Profiler' and went with it! Fortunately I didn't have any problems on my old soundcard and have none with my new one.
Latency is just something that all the 'experts' talk about and seems to be a common source of problems. I do believe it is something to do with the inherent delay in the system between 'reading' the midi data and producing the sound. But then again I may be wrong. As it hasn't affected me, I didn't delve into it too much!

Not sure about your other problems - are you saying your midi data got recorded into an audio track? without you intending it ? Wierd!!!!

I had this problem both on my Laptop and PC. Latency helps but doesn't solve all. I changed my PC from an integrated audio to a good sound card and the difference was immediate and dramatic. Onboard integrated sound cards just don't cut it. I'm looking into buying an external sound usb card for my laptop (Soundblater audigy).

For an example of the difference, the guitar parts of my song "Sample o' Blues" on Acid Planet (http://www.acidplanet.com/artist.asp?PID=325970&T=7484) were recorded using the old and new sound card. The first solo up to the 2:19 mark was recorded from the old card, the second solo @2:20 was recorded when I got the new card. You'll immediately notice an amazing difference in quality and levels when the second solo kicks in.

The card I now use is a $79.95 SoundBlaster Audigy Gamer.

You can also go to fx and open it up check all effects areas and make sure the delays are off. as well as setting your latency slider

Latency is the time difference between when you hit a note and the synth plays it. the latency buffering slider helps, but also having a fast enough system helps, and making sure that there is not to many other things running in the background, like antivirus, firewalls, and the like.

Also check for options/audio/input monitoring, make sure nothing is highlighted in the box. This then causes another issue, you can not hear what you are recording , so then the answer is to get a low cost mixer board like a behringer 802 and monitor from there.
