Hello Sirs, Yes, I have to agree. It is a very good effort. There is quite a bit going on there. I think I hear a mandolin in there, or a banjo, or something that sounds like that. Or is that some kind of lap steel? So, if I were your producer I would make a few recommendations. Work on the mix dynamics. I think I would give every instrument a chance to come through in different places. The lead guitar parts are well played, but the song is dominated by that instrument. If I had a bundle file I would do a little more automation so that there was a bit more ebb and flow. I would also suggest allowing the bass to shine a bit more. I think even mixing in another bass “sound” to maybe mimic some of the guitar parts, maybe something with a little more slap and rattle. That dobro, or banjo, or whatever it is could certainly be used to introduce another part of the song too instead of just at the beginning. The drums are nice, but I might have the drummer back off on the power in a few places. It happens at 1:50 or so, but it could be done in a few different places Then I would get someone to write up some lyrics and drop some vocals in there. I like the playing and the sound, but I also like to pretend I own a record label. I can tell by how many comments you get that you are popular around here so I hope my comment is not taken as effrontery. Jesse

Hey, what do you mean? Don't tell that to my friends from India or Tibet; or my vocal music friends either. I was always taught that the voice is an instrument. In fact for many years, going way back, it was the only instrument. It can change pitch, it can express emotion, it has a range. But, I know you guys are just playing with me, and don't forget that I said "if I were your producer." I don't see any pitchforks. Jesse

stevec Oooh... I like that. Nice groove anchored by a great bass line and the guitar melodies/harmonies are very cool and well executed. Everything just sounds as it should. Oh, and the keyboard parts happening in the background really fill out space nicely.
Thanks Steve.

I can only chime in with more of the same, regarding the playing and writing. Though my favorite aspect is the dramatic size of the mix; big and powerful. Nice job on all counts! Really nice. I am curious as to the drums. What did you use? DI'd guitar and Bass? or ? Through what? and the "hammered dulcimer?" off to the right side? What is that? What's the lowdown bird's eye on this caper? 1) EZdrummer2. NOt at the DAW right now so I'm not sure what kit it was. I changed the kit once I had Jaymes' geeters 2) My mayte James will have to answer that juan 3) Bass->UA LA-610->RME UFX, ITB effects were most likely Sonitus Compressor & UAD Helios 69

Guitar is 1979 Les Paul Standard through Boss a BR-8 using a custom patch into (at that time) M-Audio 24/96 soundcard, into (at that time) Sonar 8. I used an EBow Plus on the middle section.

Michael, I have 5 basses. 1977 Alembic, American P-Bass w/Seymor Duncan Quarter Pound pup, Variax Modeling Bass, Kala Uke Bass and a custom made 5-String. I'm not sure if this was the P-Bass or the Alembic, but I'm leaning towards the P-Bass from memory.

I'm wanting to get another P, but am quite happy with this Blacktop Jazz which has 2 P pups in it. I haven't tried a Quarter Pounder yet, and a buddy keeps harping on me to try a Area P, so I'm wishing I could try one somewhere. I loved your tone on the track and it made me miss my '80 G&L L1000, which always sounded great once I started Auto-Tuning it. It had a soft neck and intonated poorly. After spending almost $500 on various "cures"(over 20 years), I sold it to a guy, my age (66) who "liked"(?!?!) high action and thought it was killer. The Blacktop was a blowout deal, and will keep me till I find the perfect P. Michael
