    I'd probably go with Surfacing from Sarah myself. But also:

    1. Tiger Lilly, Natalie Merchant (for the mellow moments)
    2. Eruption, Bob Marley (in case there happens to be a big pot field on the island)
    3. Bat out of Hell, Meatloaf (for when I want to sing my head off and be depresesed, given that I'm on an island all alone)
    4. Relish, Joan Osborne (so good rockin bluesy mood stuff)
    5. The Wall, Pink Floyd (does that count as two?, for the I can't take it here any more, it's time to kill myself moods)

    There are lots of other specific songs I'd like to have, but those would be a good variety to cover a lot of moods. Hard to leave out all The Beatles' albums of course.

    Great question Jessie, tough to limit it to five though!

    These would definitely go with me, no particular order so alpahabetically by band:

    * The Clash ------ The Clash [1977]

    * Ian Dury ------- New Boots and Panties [1977]

    * Judas Priest --- Sad Wings of Destiny [1976]

    * Pink Floyd ----- Wish You were Here [1975]

    * The Stranglers - Rattus Norvegicus [1977]

    If I could smuggle in another 10, these would go too:

    * Fleetwood Mac -------- Rumours [1977]

    * Iron Maiden ---------- Iron Maiden [1980]

    * Judas Priest --------- Painkiller [1990]

    * Gary Moore ----------- Still Got the Blues [1990]

    * Motörhead ------------ Overkill [1979]

    * Pink Floyd ----------- Dark Side of the Moon [1973]

    * Sex Pistols ---------- Never Mind the Bo****ks, here's the Sex Pistols [1977]

    * Stiff Little Fingers - Inflammable Material [1979]

    * Thin Lizzy ----------- Live and Dangerous [1978]

    * Van Halen ------------ Van Halen [1978]

    Hmm..going to be some mood-swings on that island so...

    John Martyn - Solid Air (blissed-out, 3am, bottle of red wine washed up on the shore)
    Justin Currie - What is Love For? (bad day, poor me, wallow in sadness)
    The Who - Who's Next (will need to 'rock' eventually)
    Kate Rusby - Underneath The Stars (the ultimate soothing female voice..aahh)
    Steely Dan - Two Against Nature (for quasi-intellectual, arch and knowing, groovin' days)

    Zungle - I had to reply because that is so spooky!

    If I could expand my list out to 20 [the 20 I originally listed to choose 5 from] the other five would have included 'Double Live Gonzo!!' ["This here's a love song... dedicated to all that Nashville pussy" - classic!], 'Heaven and Hell' and 'Unleashed in the East'.

    The other two [SteveStrummer smuggle #2] I listed were Status Quo's 'Quo Live' [at the Glasgow Apollo] and 'Scared to Dance' by The Skids.

    I have to agree that Rob's 'Live Insurrection' is pure quality - probably the last time he ever sang all those Priest classics without having to keep coming down an octave.

    BTW, have you got the recent live CD/DVD of 'Heaven and Hell'? It is quite superb I reckon, anyone who want's to know what guitar tone is all about only has to listen to a few bars of Iommi on this.

    Oh hell yeah!

    The first five tracks on Disc 1 are just smokin...........the poduction is awsome.............a little touched up in the studio, but I don't care.

    Have you listened to Jon Olivas Pain ?..............excellent production.

    I hadn't picked it up yet...............I did p/u the latest with the new Dio tracks..............as I suspected Dio's about a decade beyond retirement............I was afraid his vocals may ruin the rest of the DVD.

    First and foremost - Baby Animals debut CD - simply some of the best rock ever, not a bad track on the album

    Secondly - I know it's a Greatest Hits album but it features Peter Green at his best

    Thirdly - Jeff Lang - Disturbed Folk 2. Lang is awesome

    I've been listening to this album forever, couldn't do without it

    Lastly - One of the coolest jazz albums ever by one of the best jazz singers ever

    albums is a tricky for me, since a lot of the tunes that would make my top 50 EVER only feature in single format. Also now SO MANY albums have 2-3 decent tracks and the rest are filler.

    one album I bought 2 times was massive attacks blue lines. So I guess that would feature.

    Prodigy's "prodigy experience"

    Moby's Play album I liked (BUT you heard some songs everywhere and it got OVER played)

    Kate Bushs stuff I liked, but again which album

    at least 1 of 4hero's albums would feature, but their remix of "black gold sun" I will never tire of and it didn't feature on their albums.
    Deffo something by Stevie wonder, but which album ? songs in the key of life.. (not the 80's stuff )

    u2.. again which album?!?!

    Daft punk.. like their work

    the obvious names mentioned before me, are to my taste also. I like the kinks for some of their work also. It's impossible for me to choose to be honest. Sampling years ago has got me to listen to all sorts of music I wouldn't have listened to.

    A lot of younger peoples i-pods now feature music their parents used to listen to.. says a lot about the music around now.hehe

    one album that would never feature.. anything by james blunt.. his voice grates my teeth.

    Mine features stuff from the 1930's even the 1830's. I would easily replace one of my Desert Island disks with Beethoven's 9th.

    Bad music may be a fact of life in todays world and sheep still flock together but good taste still endures.

    Wow, my first choice would be a copy of Beethoven's 9th symphony, or even just the last movement of that titanic composition.

    I'd also include:

    Joni Mitchell: Court And Spark

    Lyle Lovett: Ponitac (or Joshua Judges Ruth)

    B.B. King: Live At The Regal

    Wow, number 5 is a tough one. I'd probably have to choose from one of these:

    REM: Automatic For The People, or;

    Red Hot Chile Peppers: Blood Sugar Sex Magik, or;

    Counting Crows: August And Everything After, or;

    Walter Becker: Eleven Tracks Of Whack, or;

    Mozart: Requiem, or;

    Cream: Live Volume II, or............

    This could go on forever, of course..... ;>)

    Hi, Rbh,

    Glad to see someone else mentioning "Eleven Tracks Of Whack". One of my all-time favorite albums. Yet, most of my Steely Dan-loving friends hated Walter's album for some reason. I thought I'd lost my mind because I only know one other person who really liked "Whack". All my other friends said I was nuts for being such a big fan of this album. Maybe I'm just a sucker for sad, broken relationship, heroin addiction songs..... ;>)

    I think my mood range would be pretty much covered if I brought:
    - Steely Dan, Aja
    - The Smiths, Louder than Bombs (a B-side compilation but still the most coherent collection of songs they ever managed to put on a single disc).
    - Joy Division, Closer
    - Tom Waits, Rain Dogs
    - Talking Heads, Remain in Light

    Arrgh, this became a nauseatingly politically correct list! Better go listen to Lenny Kravitz...

    SteveStrummerUK smuggle list:

    Fiona Apple, Tidal
    Steve Vai, Alien Love Secrets
    Al DiMeola, Elegant Gypsy
    Metallica, Ride the Lightning
    Tori Amos, Little Earthquakes
    Van Halen, Van Halen
    Joe Satriani, Surfing with the Alien
    Vinnie Moore, Time Odyssey
    Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Rising Force

    Betcha can't guess what instrument I play.

    Funny that looks like my smuggle list sans Fiona. I'd put in Shawn Lane - Powers of Ten and in place Tori Amos I'd put in Tony MacAlpine - Edge of Insanity

    For my list though

    1- Rush - Chronicles
    2- Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
    3- Dream Theater - Awake
    4- Van Halen - Fair Warning
    5- King's X - Gretchen Goes to Nebraska

    Little Earthquakes would have been high on my backup team as well, as would Tidal. Both are great albums. If compilation albums count, then I'd probably throw the Garden State soundtrack album in there. Lots of good stuff on there.

    Alan Parsons - I Robot
    Phil Collins - Face Value
    Foreigner - 4
    Michael McDonald - If That's What It Takes
    Rush - Signals

    Threads like this point up the necessity of NOT being stuck on a desert island with someone whose tastes differ too dramatically from one's own. I see a few albums above that would put me in Lord of the Flies, "Kill the Pig" mood . . .

    Here's my list (in no particular order), if I'm over limit it's a good thing I'm on a desert island and no one can bust me for it --

    1. "The Raincoats"
    2. The White Album
    3. "The Velvet Underground with Nico"
    4. "The Clash"
    5. "Blonde on Blonde"
    6. "Exodus"

    Lol, I actually had to think about this one (a good thing).

    1. David Bowie - Diamond Dogs

    Whoa tough call.

    Tool - Aenima
    Yes - Yes Songs
    Nina Simone - Gold
    The Guess Who - Ultimate Collection
    Beirut - The Flying Cup Club (my current favorite album, first album that I have enjoyed as much as Tool since Aenima was released)
