I bought the Whole Earth catalog on Kindle but I ran out of batteries before I finished reading about how to build the wind farm.
:-(
I brought lots of photo voltaic sheets and batteries, but I left the darn adapter at home.

Yeah, the Kindle runs for about week. This is reading before bed and some day time reading. I was surprised at how long the battery lasted.

Bapu told me that if you leave the wireless off, you can go longer than a week on one charge. Don't know about the Kindle, though. (There, tribute has been paid...  )

So, there I was lounging on the deck reading 'Game Change' on my Kindle. I press the button for next page.....half the screen is blank and the rest of the screen is filled with black lines. I turn it on/off a few time. Nada. I call Amazon...on a late Saturday afternoon. Two rings, one selection button later I am connected to Kristine (no Indian accent BTW). I explain the problem, Kristine asks few question (mainly related to my Amazon account), and stated she would have a new replacement shipped Next-Day. The entire conversation was less than 3 minutes. All I need to do when the new one arrived was to put the broken one into the same box, attach the pre-paid label, and send it back. All, no charge. My books would automatically download when I turned on the new Kindle. When I checked my email later there was an apology from Amazon (actually Kristine) with the shipping/tracking info for my new Kindle. Considering the number of Amazon customers, I was impressed. I really like good customer service. It would be nice if more companies were as customer oriented. Disclosure: I do not work for Amazon.

It seems Desert Islands have come along way since Robinson Crusoe found himself on one too.
All he had to do was find a way to buzz Amazon today and he'd have had a new man Friday at the latest.
