Destortion and stereo problem after bouncing a session with just 3 tracks.

Hi all

I hope some one can please help with this

Today I bounced a bunch of sessions I was working on they are just small sessions One guitar One vocal and a backing track that was imported and used to play along

Nothing is peeking in the mix and nothing is paned also all tracks are mono

For some reason when I bounce the sessions there seems to be a lot of distortion comeing out my left speaker that wasn't there in the original session. ( I can tell the track is cliping just by listening )

I Imported it back in to sonar X1 to find that the wave on the left of the stereo track was peeking like mad !

I have trye'd fast bouncing and bouncing what you here also a real time bounce and audible bounce but with no change its till very bad but only in the left speaker

I have no Idea whats caused this but I have 10 tracks all doing the same thing and this is the first time I have come across this problem

Its for a paying client as well so its a big problem he was expecting to get the tracks by the end of the weekend.

Can anyone tell me whats gone wrong here ?

Thanks for all help on this one

Norrie

I've seen this before, but only due to unexpected routing.

Make sure that all of your tracks are indeed routed to the master bus and not set direct.

I've seen it where if some tracks go direct to your outs bypassing the master bus, it'll sound okay during playback, but it's really clipping like mad when you bounce. My best guess for this is that the sound card it self has more headroom for playback then what the digital 0dB is in sonar. But when you bounce everything and sum it into a file, you're blowin it up.

That's my best guess. And this probably depends on the sound card. But I have seen this exact behavior at a friends studio using a presonus fire studio.

For those thinking "why would you ever set a track to go direct out, instead of master bus".. I actually do this frequently when tracking. I do this for when I'm tracking vocals to provide quick sub mixes to quickly adjust the "song" volume and vocal volume differently. Instead of creating a new vocal bus and music bus, I just temporarily have the vocals route direct and then use the master fader for dropping the music. Works like a charm unless I forget to re-route everything through the master bus after tracking.

I've had it happen with Multiple harmony vox bounced to one track. Not just one channel though. Did he maybe record two tracks, like a rhythm guitar, simultaneously using the same input channel(ie mono/left) for both tracks?

    Thanks for the reply guys.

I have checked what the out put is cliping at on the VS-700 and its siting at -0.5 no cliping there

Everything is also set to rout to the master bus so I have no Idea why this is happening its 10 tracks as well :(

We recorded guitar and vocals at the same time through 2 inputs mono left on to 2 different tracks

Would that cause the problem ? Ive done it a million times before with no problems like that. Is there any way to fix this if not Ive lost a lot of work and money.

    Thanks for all help

For some reason Norrie it does for me. If I don't select mono/Right for the second track I'm recording that track will vary from the first track and clip. It happened last week as a matter of fact.

I recorded two tracks at the same time last week using mono/left for the input on both tracks and the second track clipped... I set the input of the second track to mono/right, recorded the track again and the levels were identical as they should be.

Maybe normalize that one channel and see how it sounds?

I don't know how your tracks are set up and recorded but could you copy and paste to remedy the situation?

    Hi guys

I went back to work on the tracks today and it turns out that the reason I am hearing the tracks panned mostly out of the left monitor is if I have sends on the tracks when I go to bounce the session.......

Is there any reason for why this would be surely I can leave the sends on ?
    What have I missed ?

    Thanks to all
