Development Machine Specs for Sonar X1

Hi All,

Does anyone know what the specs are for the machines Sonar X1b was developed and QA tested on.  Being a developer myself, I know very well that it always works on the developers machine.

I am getting ready to build a new machine so that information would be very helpful.

Thanks,

Tom

I can tell you that I have had no problems through X1, X1a and now with X1b - here are my specs
Intel Core i7-860 processor(8MB Cache, 2.80GHz)
8GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz-4x2GB
Serial ATA II RAID 0 With Dual 750GB Hard Drives
nVIDIA GeForce G310 512MB DDR3

Plus all 'non audio' crap turned off

It's running extremely smoothly and has done since Sonar 8.5.3

it is actually pretty much an 'off the shelf' Dell system - I think I added more RAM and requested no additional software to be installed (it was over a year ago).
I think the way your computer is set up is nearly as important as the specs - nothing running in the background, no automatic updates etc - keeping it really lean.
I read some posts on here about crashes and problems and wonder how many of them have all of the fancy graphics stuff running on their system.
One thing missing from my specs list - I am running Windows 7 64 bit (Standard version)

Yeah, I think I agree.  I have been going through many posts here because I am having some issues with the dual core system I am currently using and I am beginning to believe that you are correct in the fact that the setup of the machine is actually more important than the machine itself.  I am going to go through all my setup tonight and see what improvements I can make before I actually abandon this machine.  I am not creating large compositions or anything so I am wondering if I actually need to upgrade the system yet.

Thanks for all the input.  Time for some fun.

Sounds good. I am software architect and have been in R&D for 28 Years now.  I am fairly sure that between the pair of us, we can come up with a nice machine.

Thanks for all the input everyone.  I was wanting to find out what kind of people have run into and it sounds like there are a few things I need to look out for.  A friend of mine sent me this Mother Board and CPU but based on some of the responses and other posts, I am not completely sure if anyone has run into issues with something along these line.

He suggested the ASUS M4A89GTD Pro with the AMD Phenom II X6 1055T.  From what I read, it seems very nice, can anyone see anything wrong with this?  And, yes, I am using Firewire at the moment for both Audio and MIDI.

Thanks,

Tom

Re:Development Machine Specs for Sonar X1 2011/03/29 07:56:47 (permalink)
Hi Jon,

I understand the chit part, got a 17 year old daughter to contend with.

I read through the detailed specs for that Motherboard and have decided to abandon it altogether as it has both JMicron and non TI chipsets for Firewire.  It seems those two things are very much things I need to avoid.

I am not necessarily confining myself to AMD and I am totally open to using an Intel chipset, so any input on Intel builds will be more than welcome.  I just want to make sure that what I build is going to work fine.  I currently have a Dual Core system but I am experiencing problems with it and I believe it is because of the fact that I have Sonar, Reaktor, Guitar Rig, and a large sample library going.  I am currently using a Presonus Firebox but I am planning on upgrading to something like the FireStudio before long.  I just want to make sure that whatever I build can handle all this without having to battle hardware issues.  I can deal with software issues without any problems but I am not up to date on hardware at all.

Thanks,

Tom

Suggest you get in touch with Jim Roseberry on the forum here. For a $40 consultation via email he'll provide a list with links of compatible components based on your budget.

He's a SONAR user, a professional musician and DAW buider. his business Studiocat builds quality DAWS for the audio industry and he gets to test all the latest components and can tell you what's what.

highly recommended by many of us. I'm in Australia and couldn't use his build service but didn't hesitate to get a compatible parts list for my new DAW. Jim alsio gave me a tutorial in burn in and testing procedures to make sure that my build was running reliably before installing any software.

All worked as planned and still going strong. Highly recommended

After looking at all the units that were pre-built in brick and morters in Dallas, I didn't like what was offered.  This is before I learned through this forum that there are systems being built specifically for DAW by folks that are not DELL and HP or IBM.
After researching the latest and greatest, my base line would be a 6 core.  For the price I went with the AMD 1090T with a motherboard that supports SATA6. Bought a small 80 gig SDD and was floored by the performance. When discussing overclocking with the technical sales rep, (A kid that was more up to date than I) I realized after getting the system up and running, there was no need to overclock.  Granted, I spent a little more on the video card (Black Ops had just shipped) so I have a 3-D gaming system too.
Sonar 8.5, X1,X1aand X1b has run solid on this setup.  Of course, I don't use hardly any plug-ins other than VST's.
One thing I find strange, is no one seems to recommend SATA6 devices...maybe they know something I don't but I'm very happy with (Up to) 600mbs. I always read about SATA 3.  Maybe someone can answer that.

Stumbled across this:

http://www.cakewalk.com/PCResource/default.aspx

It's a list of PC specs recommended by Cakewalk, and examples of the PC's they use at trade shows etc.

My DAW: Intel i5, Cakewalk UA-1G, Win7 64 bit, SONAR X1a Producer 64 bit

Hi All,

Thanks for all the input this morning.  After going through all the information and various links, I think I have finally settled on my build.  Since the majority of the links I looked at did not use AMD based builds, I have abandoned that for an Intel based build.  Here are the parts I am going to order.  If anyone can see anything wrong please let me know but I think this is going to pretty much do it.  I plan on running Win7 64 Bit with this.

Sapphire 100254HDMI Radeon HD 4650 Video Card - 1GB GDDR2, PCI Express 2.0, CrossFireX, DVI, HDMI, VGA

Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Motherboard and Intel Core i7 950 Processor BX80601950 Bundle

  Corsair CMX8GX3M2A1333C9 XMS 8GB DDR3 RAM - PC10666, 1333MHz, 2x 4GB

3 of these for a total of 24 Gb

Cooler Master RC-932-KKA3-GP HAF 932 Full Tower Case and Pre-installed eXtreme 700W Power Supply

  Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000 0F12115 Serial ATA Hard Drive - 2TB, 7200 RPM, 64MB, SATA-6G, 3.5"

2 of these.  One for samples, instruments, etc... libraries and the other for project storage.

Wintec 3FMS2B060M-WR FileMate SolidGO Solid State Drive - 60GB, 2.5", SATA, Mini USB

Will be used as my main boot and temp work drive

Hi Jon,

Thanks for the memory link.  The Audio Device I am currently using is the PreSonus FireBox.  I am wanting to upgrade to the FireStudio in the near future though.

I will switch out the video for the nvidia one.  I am not worried about graphics as this build is going to be strictly for the studio.

Thanks,

Tom
