Devoted To Solo Jazz Guitar

I have packed all my guitars and cleaned out my room. No keyboard, no Line 6 Interface, no Sonar, no lava lamp. Just my GB100 and me. I Am going to work up 15 solo jazz guitar pieces however long it takes. Thank you for your support

Jim Hall is another great one to emulate. Years ago I had a book of his on jazz guitar that was very enlightening.

Hi,

I wish that folks would not determine "jazz" as a style, since there is such an incredible individuality within it to even discuss it.

You can listen to Garbarek, Davis, Jarrett, Rypdal, McLoughlin and specially European folks, that do not follow the rudimentary American style of jazz, and often less melody based. But that might be a simple preference of mine, so please excuse me on that.

I have always thought that if anything, the jazz thing is more about the individuality than anything we can define. I guess that learning some "basics" is a nice start, although I tend to think that is just another door that you have to open later, in order to get out and free yourself?

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

Wait, isn't Jazz the easy style?  All you have to do is hit a lot of notes in some odd time pattern and, should a note really sound like it doesn't belong, return to it a few times and make it seem important, right?

Lenny Breau is way above my pay grade I think. Playing his stuff like he did is, well incomparable. It's easy to see why Chet Atkins spoke about him the way he did. He and guys like Jerry Reed were mere mortals. Chet wasn't exaggerating. Tommy Emanuel was in awe of him.

Hi,

I have some music that I might share someday ... but it is not something that would interest any of you guitar and bass monsters.

I don't do songs! Plain and simple, and I doubt that anyone here can even think of a concept for music without any western music concepts. And above all, because of the sensitivity of the work, and the poetry involved, sharing it with people ... is not something I want to do right now ... I will only say one thing ... I really wanted to have Julibee's voice in it ... but it was not to happen ... I'm not as flexible on a DAW as you guys are, and have not been able to get that far with it.

Time will tell ... in the meantime, if you can not tell the truth in my words, and think that a song will tell you more, you are more delusional than I am!

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

Well, if it had words, and you got Julibee to sing it, it would then be a 'song'.

Well, if it had words, and you got Julibee to sing it, it would then be a 'song'.

I think you had a lucky escape there Pedro.
...

Nope. They are not "lyrics" or "words" that would constitute as such. They are feelings, thoughts and ideas ... that float ... and might enhance the whole situation and it might not.

Julibee did a thing with one piece or another, that had some lyrics, but in general was not about the lyrics at all ... and the visuals were nice, too, however, this is more of a tribute/thankyou to Shakti Yoni (Gilly Smith of Gong) than anything else, since that is who it might be resembling the most, but the issue here is that the woman that does this will be defining her own moment ... not anyone else's. I might even say that it could have similar moments to Klaus Schulze's stuff with Lisa G. (Dead Can Dance), although I will suggest that this is not about that piece ... but the closest thing to it would be "Join Inn" by Ash Ra Tempel ("Janseits", I think). Right now, I'm working on adding the Bass Guitar to it.

By the time it happens, it will be another woman that will help me bring it alive. The past is gone, and Julibee is not interested, and the soft piano notes I wanted to hear, even from a soft touch, like Susan's ... is simply not to be, and I'm not comfortable even asking! This is all not about a song ... it's about closing your eyes and ... being way far away ... and you might or might not hear a slight touch or mention of something familiar, and as soon as you do, it's gone, and it might be replaced by something else ... but the "flight" continues. It's about 45 minutes long right now.

There ... more stuff, for you guys to think it's all imaginary and not real! The only other musicians I will ever use on this will be women ... and not because I want to get laid! I just want to see a dream come alive in my own work, like I can with a poem, or a short story, or a novel. Btw, the only guitarist at this point I will consider, would be Gayle Ebbett from Djam Karet.

Chinese music always fascinates me in how much it sounds like Celtic music. I guess it's probably just the pentatonic scale at work, but still....if you listen to some of the music of Vaughan Williams (The Lark Ascending for instance), some of it has a Chinese flavor.

There's this old Chinese guy who plays the erhu along with an orchestral backing tape at the Delancy Street subway station, really beautiful stuff that has the whole station captivated, and at times I really can't tell the difference between it and Irish music.

I've never been a big fan of jazz of any strain, but I do really appreciate the musicianship of the people who make it.

Having said that, one of my all-time favourite listens is my 2CD album of tunes by Stephane Grapelli and Django Reinhardt. I can lose myself in there for an hour or so.

I used to play billiards with a chap who was an accomplished jazz clarinet player. A more miserable, dour man it would be hard to imagine, but when he took the stage he just came alive. Sadly he passed away at a relatively tender age due to chronic alcoholism a few years back.

Is the album called 18 fingers?

No, actually, what IS the name of this album?  He did a few with Stephane (including Django Et Stephane, but that's only a single CD).

Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!
