Did Myself A Favor - [I think]

So I actually did myself a favor and finally officially unsubscribed from any future emails from AudioDeluxe. When presented with an option to give a reason, I chose 'other' from the list, and stated that I have far too many VSTs as it is, and that I actually need to start using what I have already, instead of just continually shopping for them. I feel good about my decision, and my credit card & Paypal account feel even better about it !

    Hi jimusic,

You Sir, have more will power than I do. I should do the same but just can't get myself to cut the cord. I think I may need a support group to beat my addiction to VST sales.

The only down side, I can see, of your decision is that you now need to stay away from this forum as there is always someone posting that AD is having a Super Sale on some VST...

    Purrrfect Audio DAW here.  Wow!...

'and stated that I have far too many VSTs as it is, and that I actually need to start using what I have already, instead of just continually shopping for them'

We can all say that. Stop this nonsense and subscribe again.

jimusic, should be banned for his outburst but we need to show restraint. Come back to the fold and we'll let this 'episode' be forgotten. We shall never refer to it again.

Ya know, I have been watching a lot of the Groove3 videos that we got for free this month. I realized I have more than enough tools and I really need to just learn them to use them better.

So, there is a deal today for $10/month for unlimited G3 vids. I signed up for that instead of new plugs.

You can "unsubscribe" to AudioDeluxe???  I thought it was like the Scientology billion year deal or something.  What next?  Atonal music?  Mass suicides?  The center cannot hold...things fall apart.

What's all this about learning the plugs we have?

That hard and worst of all it's time consuming. Takes away from valuable speculating/drooling about what to buy next.

I've spent way too many hours contemplating what might be another musical tool to bring me one step closer to musical euphoria and God-like powers. Getting and wanting more gear is an ever elusive fix that never fixes, but always inevitably desires more.

Windows 7 64 bit, Sony Vaio Laptop Q740, 8 GB, Sonar Producer X1d, Focusrite Scarlett 18i, Korg Pa500, M-audio 61 Radium Keystation. Using Omnisphere, Trilian, Komplete 8, Morphestra, Orchestral Essentials, Evolve, Orange Tree Guitars, Addictive Drums, BFD2, Melodyne Editor, Studio One 2, Ozone 5, FabFilter.

Thanks. Hadn't hit their site, so I didn't know about the deal.  I also have been getting a lot from the freebie, so I decided to jump on this for another month or so.  I still have a lot of videos I've been wanting to get through.  I agree that I have plenty of tools and it's just a matter of learning how to use what I've got.  (But still I find myself watching for great deals... it's kind of an addiction.)

They call 'em fingers, but I've never seen 'em fing.

    ...Traitor!!!...

...The only down side, I can see, of your decision is that you now need to stay away from this forum as there is always someone posting that AD is having a Super Sale on some VST...

Yeah I know - a padded 'white isolation room' instantly comes to mind.

...jimusic, should be banned for his outburst but we need to show restraint. Come back to the fold and we'll let this 'episode' be forgotten. We shall never refer to it again...

Yes - what on earth was I thinking? But please don't bail on me now!
I need all the support I can get at this critical time in my now unstable, uncertain future.

Perhaps I'll march right to it and re-subscribe once again.

Please forgive my previously foolish decision.

...What's all this about learning the plugs we have?...

...That's hard and worst of all it's time consuming. Takes away from valuable speculating/drooling about what to buy next...

Well you see, that was the whole problem in the first place!

Totally!!! 2 Jims now & counting.

Uh oh - Now I'm starting to 'itch all over' from 'VST junky withdrawl symptoms'!

I guess the first day really is the hardest!

...Take two aspirines and make an appointment with your doctor in the morning...

    Done!

    Didn't help though.

Already checking my emails for my 'daily fix', even though I've lost contact with 'my supplier'.

That spells trouble on the horizon!

I have to admit that a few months ago, in a sort of same idea as yours kind of way.......
I marked AD email as spam.

But it only lasted like a week.
I found myself in my spam folder checking out the deals anyway.

    I'm so ashamed.

Hey now why didn't I think of that? Sounds perfectly simple!

I too will just shop for that 'one more piece of gear', then we can start a millionaires club shortly afterwards.

Thank for the tip Mathew! Who would have thunk it'd be so easy!

There's still some room in that 'white padded iso-room' if you want, Mike.

    Re:Did Myself A Favor - [I think] 2013/02/01 15:24:30 (permalink)
One thing that seems to work for me (relatively) is that I try to determine what I need and stay focused on that.

I have a lot of plug-ins which I just never use, which I bought because they were on sale, many that were a cheap alternative to this or that, or to make up for this or that, and such.

For example, I had been after a SSL-type of channel strip for quite a while - and I've spent almost as much on alternatives as it would have cost me to buy the Waves Bundle (on sale). And the thing is that, I still wanted the Waves bundle.

I did eventually end up grabbing McDSP's Channel G, which I actually prefer to Wave SSL. But the lesson I've learned is that it would have been much wiser to buy Channel G in the first place than to spend money on plug-ins I wasn't 100% happy w/, anyway.

These days, I try to plan ahead, based on my needs. Like, I know I'm doing a lot of manual level editing on bass, so Waves Bass Rider is on my list, but I have other priorities. C4 is also on that list, because I'm not too happy w/ the multiband in Logic - but I'm giving myself a bit more time w/ it, before I buy the C4.

But overall, even just $100 spent on plug-ins is $100 that I can put on Roxul for bass traps or on a new pick up for one of my guitars - something which makes a much bigger difference than plug-ins, considering that even just the basic bundles stuff that comes w/ any DAW these days is fairly decent.

Some stuff I've bought, I never really looked at much before, nor intended on buying, but you know how it is - here's the deal staring you in the face & next thing ya know...

Yeah, the thing is that, unless you actually make a plan or a list of some kind and stick to it, it's like walking into a store w/ all your money in your hands and begging the salesperson to tell you what it is that you may need...

As I said, identifying what you need and why you need it can be a good first step. Of course, there'll always be this attraction for shinny new toys, but when you have a plan, it's easier not to dilapidate your budget on just about any thing.

My plan is to only come into this Software Forum and hear about some nifty low cost and interesting libraries as I'm pretty sure I have all the plugs I'll ever need and/or want (says the guy who just bought Waves SSL 4000 Native when he has the UAD SSL and all Pro Channel stuff too; I'm a sad individual )

    Yes -

Funny thing is, that even though I've been a member since May 2008, I've just recently stumbled onto or into this 'Software' section of the forums, never really paying any attention to it before.

But now I see it as a daily enticement for what will prove to be nothing short of a recipe for financial doom!

This is why I'll make sure that the 'white padded isolation room' is locked from the outside - and that there's no internet access whatsoever!  [or Paypal!]
