Well, it's good to try different things to find what works. And, remember, everyone's got an opinion, and they're not all right.....sift through things and trust your instincts.

Keep up the good work.....you're a talent Jeff.

the new mix sounds like someone stuffed some cotton in my headphones

sounded great for the introduction -- all warm and fuzzy presence, but i like a little more sparkle -- might just be me tho

otherwise like the changes and the open feel

ok .. so Will caved into the awesome pressure generated
by the songs forum and is adding generous amounts of floor wax
and dessert topping to shimmer it up. i'll repost it when he's
done. ... see .. you have more influence than you think ;-)

thanks again,
jeff
Ps: I find the usage of tools like Crane Song Phoenix to
emulate analog tape compression an amusing trend .....

Jeff,

Does this mean that you do not want me to finish tweaking out my mix of DSB when I get back to Florida? Or retrack the gtr solo?

Again.... I am at a library, so I am unable to listen to anything until I get back to the studio.

I will also respond to some of the comments made once I get back and have time to digest them as well.

BTW.... I will be leaving sometime tomorrow and will be stopping off in Nashville on my way back to Florida.

Jeff

After your helpful comments to my song I took a listen to yours ... fantastic. I like your style of music (I detect a hint of Level 42 in there), I think that we would be in the same genre (although your music can be put in the general genre of good listening while I'm not sure that mine qualifies ;))

I especially like how "full" the sound is, which is what I feel is lacking the most in the song I put up.

Again, great stuff ... gives me something to shoot for.

Sorry about the delay checking it out Jeff....and I Love this latest version. Much more balanced, and smooth, yet retaining the "shimmer". It seems to be a nice balance between the other 2, but to be fair, I did not re-listen to the other 2, so I am judging this one on it's merit.

Well Done

RE: Different Shade of Blue 2004/12/12 13:52:01 (permalink)
I thought there was maybe too much verb on the vox and that they were a little pitchy sometimes - If it was my mix, I'd try to tighten those two things up just a little. I also thought the guitar solo, while the choice of notes was nice, was playing too far ahead of the beat and not grooving as much as it could with the rest of the instruments...

Your comments are right on the money Dan.

I personally thought there was too much ambiance on the vocal tracks myself, but that is what Jeff wanted. So, when I do the final tweaks, I will be adjusting the ambiance to what I think works best for the track.

As far as the gtr solo goes..... My solo was only a preliminary solo to see what Jeff thought of it. It was not the final take or mix of it at all. I was going to retrack the whole solo for the final mix once I received his approval of it. And any timing problems that I had in the preliminary solo would have not been in issue in the final tracked solo. Jeff just posted the tune before I had the chance to retrack the solo.

In all fairness to Jeff..... He would have had to wait until I got back from vacation for me to retrack the solo..... which would have been three weeks..... so he did what he had to do for him to make his submission deadline.

No real comments other than to say how much I like that song. I prefered the sound of the V6_16 version though because the vocals were brighter and the guitar solo was much less cluttered. But that's just personal preference. Anyway, nice song.

V6_16 was chaz's version of the mix before he had to take off on
vacation ... i think he's gonna tweak it again .. i'll post it when he does
... and the guitar solo.. i'm torn .. i like both .. .. but am leaning toward the later version.
thanks for your comments!
jeff

I take PayPal, cash, postage stamps...

Well, to be specific, I think the first guitar solo is a little predictable in where it goes and the second is more interesting from that point of view -- but there's too much speed and not enough melody and that's where the first one seems better. But I'm not much of a musician's musician whereas you guys can obviously really play and sing so a musical comment from me is probably about the same as having sex education from the Pope.

I think I can speak for many on this forum when I say that we value any comments and/or suggestions made about our tunes. It helps us to think about things from a different perspective.

So, thanks for your comments.

Well.... Those would have to be engineering chops, Randy, as someone else did the gtr solo in this mix. I have never been able to play that many notes in so short of a time. Never was a flashy guitar player, just one who could get the job done. I am a very solid rhythm guitarist though.

Anyway..... Thanks for the kind words.

I am sorry Chaz, I didn't know he changed guitar players. And yes, your engineering chops are as awesome as the guitar solo! Hey, you can play guitar with me anytime...
