Digital Input Problems

So, I just recently bought MC3 and I have yet to be able to record using my S/ PDIF Input that I run from my roland Digital 8 track. Before purchasing MC3 I was using Audacity 1.3 and the digital input gave me no problems. I could even use it on other programs like TeamSpeak.

Basically, when I go to record, I check the monitor and play my guitar/ whatever and there is so much gain you can't tell what is coming out of the speakers. I have tried to turn everything down. (the 8 track, the input level, the speakers, everything that I know. And windows wont let me turn down the digital input either, I tried that). But the distortion and gain continue all the way down to -inf dB. Where, obvisously, it goes away.

I can record analog just fine, but i prefer digital. (the static just kills me)

Finally, my question is... Is there some level adjustment that i missed or a step not taken? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

-Alex88

I'm using the onboard. I have an HP Pavillion a1020n. It has realtek drivers and stuff.

and your onboard sound card has SPDIF? wow, first of all, let me say that I've never used SPDIF, so I'm shooting at the hip, here. at this point, I'd just treat it like it was any other onboard sound card and tell you to try using the MME driver mode: OPTIONS>AUDIO>ADVANCED>DRIVER MODE = MME
you'll need to close MC and restart it, let the wave profiler run and see if it still gives you problems. if so, report back

I have never seen a S-PDIF on a realtek built in, i imagine you are trying to send digital to a line in analog

Yes, there are motherboards with onboard soundcards which have SPDIF. a quick search lead me to these:
    http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Spec.aspx?ClassValue=Motherboard&ProductID=2373&ProductName=GA-M61PM-S2
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c00748726&dlc=en&lang=en
    http://www.nforcershq.com/article1584.html

Honestly, tho, alex - I would highly recommend you upgrading the sound card. if you have a desktop computer, I'd recommend something like this:
    http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/MAudio-Audiophile-2496-PCI-Digital-Audio-Card?sku=701341
    http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/EMu-0404-PCI-Digital-Audio-Recording-System?sku=240390

    both have SPDIF I/O ports.

AND if you record analog on those cards you will get a MUCH lower noise floor than you ever thought was possible so you win either way.

BTW - if you HAVE to have an external card (if you have a laptop), then go with something like this:
    http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/EMu-0404-USB-2.0-Recording-Interface?sku=242516

it also has SPDIF I/O as well as very low noise floor analog I/O PLUS it also has mic pres and instrument DIs!!!

Thanks a lot Beagle. The MME Driver mode worked. I'm digital again. And as for the sound cards go, thanks for looking out. I just need to get a little bit of money saved up and might pick one up. One last 'Q' though. I like to run my 5.1 surround for gaming and movies. Can I still use the onboard audio for that and the card for recording, with easy switching?

you can, but it's not a recommendation I give. I always recommend that you disable the other sound card.

there's a work around tho, but it's not "easy switching". you can set up separate hardware profiles, one with the onboard 5.1 for gaming and the other for your recording. to switch between the two profiles you have to reboot your system. if you're interested in that, I can give you directions on how to do that.

+1 for Hardware Profiles. It's easy to set up, no drive partitioning or other voodoo. No, you can't hot swap from one profile to another, but realistically, if you start a gaming session that is what you will be doing for quite some time. Likewise with recording.
I enjoy recording, but every now and then I like sliding a virtual Ferrari around a corner(gotta have the wheel and pedals!), or shooting down an ME109.
