Dimbulb

This will probably get moved but I thought one of the Windows 7 gurus might be able to correct an issue I'm having on my new DAW running Windows 7 home premium (built by our own Jim Roseberry).  Whenever I return to the desktop from running an app, checking email, surfing the net, etc... the Desktop will slowly and slightly dim after no more than five or six seconds.  This dimming seems to occur ONLY on the Desktop and only upon power up or a return from some other app or page.  Jim and I went through all the Power and Display settings...I even tried the ACU settings.  I called my monitor maker and they had no clue.  Any other ideas on how to stop this will be greatly appreciated.

No real ideas, but just a thought,

have you tried changing the desktop theme?
does a non-Aero theme still show the same behaviour?

Just wild stabs in the dark...

Monitor color profile settings will do this.
I have messed around with mine a bunch of times (ambient light and display light)...
I have an Adobe app that changes it, but monitor manufacturers have them too.

built by our own Jim Roseberry

Isn't the reason for having it "custom  built"  so that you don't have any of these issues?  And shouldn't he remedy this instead of a forum?  it is what you paid extra for isn't?  Not trying to be anything but curious here.  :)

Anyway,  seems like  fireberd is on the right track with the video card.
try sifting through these..you may find your answer there:

    Hi My Ol Pal,

The problem isn't the build... or the video card.
We have scores of other clients (using the same machine) not having the issue.

I chased down the driver for your monitor.
I'd start by getting that installed.  (shoot me an Email and I'll respond with a download link)

Next, I'd do a factory reset on the Monitor.

Then, I'd go into the Nvidia Control Panel... and go to Display>Adjust desktop color settings
Under option 2, switch to "Use Nvidia Settings"  (adjust screen to taste)

If that fails to resolve the issue, connect via VGA.  Do you experience the same dimming behavior when connected via VGA?
It's possible that the video card is defective... but symptoms would typically be a blanketly overly dim display.
The fact that the display dims when closing apps/etc suggests a PM or display management issue.
If the video card is defective, we'll certainly replace it.

FWIW, This is why I like to do that follow-up call...
Give me a call when you're free

FWIW, I was having some issues with my Nvidia driver on my Win 7 64 laptop that seems like a similar symptom.

I haven't seen it in a while... but I have also stripped the unit of every darn service that isn't absolutely necessary.

Maybe some app installed a service that is messing with video card?

    good luck,
    mike

    Hi Mike,

Dimming the laptop's display is a normal power-saving feature.
I'd check your current power options.  As a test, switch to High Performance mode... and disable all management options or anything that would be managed in the background (under Change Advanced Power Settings).

    Thanks Jim,

The dimming I am describing was accompanied by a dialog that says... you Nvidia driver just burped... get a fresh driver.

    I had the latest driver.

The problem has not been seen since I finally got rid of all the extra stuff.

I never knew what was causing the issue... but it seemed to fool the computer into thinking the vid card was the problem.

    all the best,
    mike
