I want to change the tempo and the underlying pattern...

Thanks!!

I guess that they're taking the Fifth on this one, Mike. What's a bong, anyway?

I don't know what was used in creating the sample originally, but I can tell you that it's tedious work trying to time-stretch and extract the individual sounds from that in an audio editor. It might be "cleaner" to chop it up in .sfz editing.

I used a very old granular synthesis program called Treadmill. I passed two of the grooves shipped with Dimension Pro thru it, using God-knows-what settings (I have no idea what I used, sorry), and then mapped those in each channel of the sample. All the 'Animated Textures' were created in that way.

Not sure if this might help, but here's a ReCycled version of the sound. Check the slice keys, there are a few clear shots there, perhaps they serve for your purposes:

So when can we expect a René style ganular synth from Cakewalk? It could be called Rupture.

Whew I'm glad you answered, I was trying to sort through the
'Bong' search on ebay.... 6000 entries....

.....getting kind of hungry.....maybe a twinkie or two......milk......
    .....wait what was that noise.....quick.......

    What was I saying???

There is a surprising number hits on google having to do with Treadmills and
music, seems alot of bands have treadmill issues..

Thanks Rene for the information and the clip!! Its a tough one to pick apart.

Great sound though!! Good to hear from you B and everyone else!!

    Thanks,

    mcg

The truth comes out! You do LIKE and USE granular synthesis!

Da whot? Dood, I was already using granular synthesis when you fell in love with your 3rd grade teacher

Mrs. Woy -- oh that was 4th grade and she went on maternity leave anyway.

and dood, that was 1957, are you sure they had granular synthesis back then?

Bob Moog was just graduating from Queen's College with his first physics degree, though he already had his mail order theremin business for a few years then.

So there has been some talk that if anyone could do it, it would be Rene -- to create the 1st mainstream dance-ready granular soft synth. All those sfz files just waiting for some granularization.

Errr <cough> no, no that long ago. That was for Chad, who could almost be our son. The sound-spoiled one.

Seriously, granular synthesis was born with the Musique Concrete, shortly after the invention of the tape recorder (1938 I think). Subtractive synthesis is also way older than Bob himself, perhaps 20 years, even when it wasn't all about trance filter sweeps and supersaws back then

History Channel fans might find this amusing:

so people did granular synthesis with recording tape and razor blade editing?

getting those grain sizes equal was a matter of eye-balling
i know there were some very primitive time stretch methods
a friend of mine has re-created a series of music concrete pieces restricted just to the techniques available at its inception

but i naturally dismissed these as irrelevant and obsolete -- now I wish i remembered
maybe it was as simple as playing the tape at different speeds and physical flanging and vari-speed motors

I tried to tell him about all the things that can be done in a simple software audio editor, but he's one of these pure artist classically trained conscervancy graduates -- can't tell these guys anything

Eeeeeyooo. Don't need that visual; I went to parochial school.

You haven't lived until you've tried editing out a bad note on an 8-track reel. Or tried to maintain just the right tension between two recorders spanning the room, and not break the splices. Everyone should try it out once. Not.

only the room's natural resonance/format is all that you hear. <g>
Hehe. Retro-convolution. That's like the retro electronic delay lines. Take a bucket-brigade device, push it as far as it'll go until it disintegrates into noise, and lop off the top at some extremely low frequency. "Hey, we meant to do that. It's a tape-delay emulation!" I like retro bit reduction and decimation effects myself. Except on tape decks, they call it "bounce".

We're getting pretty far off-topic now. We were talking about bongs, weren't we?
