Dimension Pro as a live synth/performances

I'd like to use DPro live, like a workstation : so splits and/or layers of different presets within a perfomance, and the ability to choose different performances by program change commands from a controller keyboard.
Is this possible?

thanks,

Jan

It is four-voice multitimbral via midi channels. However, I believe you'd have to go in and edit the SFZ file to spread the sounds across the keyboard, or set up your controller as split for midi channels.

I believe a live performance host - Brainspawn Forte, for example - might be able to help you with this. I've seen talk about doing this with Usine, as well.

Yes, but DimPro itself is practically not multitimbral in the way you might perceive a typical workstation as being multitimbral. In other words a Roland Fantom has patches and then multi-timbral performances which are combinations of patches each on their own MIDI channel (which can be the same). While you can split the elements of DimPro into multiple MIDI channels, you can't have a number of DimPro patches within one instance, each on its own MIDI channel. Of course you can have a number of DimPro instances each on its own track within your host. But their are other software romplers which are more designed for this kind of thing.

    And which would that be?

Yeah, I figured you'd want to know that. I was too lazy to post a couple. Here's a couple of links, but there are quite a few more I would guess. I will leave it to more knowledgeable forum members to fill in the details.

    1) http://www.ultimatesoundbank.com/plugsoundpro.html

    2) http://www.sampletank.com/Main.html?prod_ST_XL

    3) http://www.native-instruments.com/index.php?id=bandstand&ftu=7f9061fa7c49a7b

    4) There was one from Wizoo which I can't locate now. The company's been taken over by M-Audio and Digidesign. Maybe the product was discontinued.

The one from Wizoo was Hypersonic, which Steinberg marketed. It's history.

I'd choose Kontakt3 over Bandstand because of the sample quality/choices, even if it potentially has less voices per instance (the GM spec says 16 channels, and Bandstand is GM). I also have Sampletank/Philharmonik/Sonik Synth 2 and DimPro.

Hypersonic, that's it. I always thought that was a great idea. Too bad it didn't continue forward with development. Sometimes you just want to make some music, not program synths. Right about Kontakt 3. The thing is, the OP seems to want a more straight-forward interface. Thus something maybe less powerful than Kontakt but more straightforward as regards the multi-timbral aspect might be more suitable.

Ok, thanks, lots to look into.

I got Virtual String Machine btw. The Solina is pretty spot on; I've got a real one standing here, but it's not the thing you'd want to move. I've got my 70's strings covered.

A sound I'm really nuts about is that Prophet lead Gary Numan uses in stuff like Cars, that high modulated fat sound. Is that anywhere to be found in a Sonar plugin?

    thanks,

    Jan

Do you mean that spooky string-like sound throughout? If so, it was a PolyMoog.

Sonar7? This will work in Rapture / LE. In Cars.prog
Use the mod wheel to kick in that Electro-Harmonix phase shifter heard during parts of the song.

Thanks, I'll try that patch later.

I always thought that sound was a Pro 53, but after some searching, I found it's the Vox Humana preset on a Polymoog indeed. I've come very close to it with the VSM, which has Polymoog wavs.

Basically, Rapture just kicks *ss for mimicking analog of any type I think. So it would be very capable of mimicking the "Cars" sound you're talking about.

I just tried that .prog file, but Rapture can't read it. I renamed it to and fxp file, but still no succes. How do I open it?

Ok, found it, sorry, still getting to know my way around things. The file is Car'ish, but so far my program in VSM is much closer. It helps ofcourse to have Polymoog waveforms at your disposal :D

    thanks,
