Ding dong delay

Hey guys, Using X1c.  I've got a vocal track that I think would benefit from a ping-pong delay in spots (and I intend to only use it in spots via bypass automation, I think I've got that nailed down already) and I'm trying to figure out the easiest way to set it up.

Based on what I've read it looks like I need two busses, one panned left and the other panned right, and they send into each other, progressively getting softer because the fader is at -6db or something.

The problem is once I send the left to the right, the right no longer has the left as a possible send destination.  So I get Dry -> left -> right, but I can't get Dry -> left -> right -> left -> right -> into oblivion.  I'm sure by the time it'll finish up its second pass it'll be mostly inaudible, but I don't really want to set up four busses just to get it to that point.

What am I doing wrong?  Or do I just need to look at a ping-pong delay VST?  Thanks for any tips.  :)

    Hello,

I think you may be over-thinking this a bit unless I'm totally misunderstanding your needs. You should be fine with using a Sonitus delay on your vocal placing it on a bus and creating a send. From there, automate in real time if you want using the output sliders. Here's how I do it..

Arm the track for automation, make sure "link" is enabled on the Sonitus delay and then set your mix sliders on the delay to be what you want output wise for the delay effect. Next, move one slider all the way to the left to make the output read 0....which will move the other slider due to it being linked.

Next, click "undo" and the delay mix sliders will go back to where you had them. Then, press play, and just keep clicking undo when you want the delay in and out. Anything you mess up on...just edit the envelope it creates after you press stop on the transport.

Or, you use the send on the track for your automation leaving the delay outputs wide open at 100 instead of automating the delay output mix sliders. Either will work in the same way.

    Hope this helps...best of luck.

OK, maybe I didn't explain it well.  I'm trying to get it to bounce back and forth, left and right, and then right back to left and back to right again.

I found a pretty simple explanation that seems to do the job.  The automation you suggested might do better than what I came up with.  Thanks!

So sorry for misunderstanding. Ok, what I'd do in this situation...yeah, run two delays on 2 busses which would require 2 sends on the track. Set one delay for left to right, the other for right to left and just use automation on the sends on the track for which one you want to hear and you should be in good shape. There are other ways but this method would take a few seconds and if you have a controller or use ACT, you can do this in real time. If not, two passes would do it also...and that's taking the long way around which still wouldn't take long and would be painless. :) Best of luck!
