DirectShow Error [0x80040265] Cannot play back the file. The format is not suported
Hi! A year and a half ago, I lost most of my projects. I'm now trying to recover the projects I need most. I don't remember exactly what I did, but I think I reinstalled XP and changed some drive-letters. After that, most of my Sonar-projects either wouldn't load or loaded with missing-audio-replacement. The projects were in separate project-folders with the according audio-folders inside. I've had success with some projects -opening auto-save-versions or other versions. Yet, the current project a found no usable versions, so I decided to take a closer look at what's going on. I tried to import a wav-file, that displayed as missing, and got the following error-message: DirectShow Error [0x80040265] Cannot play back the file. The format is not suported. The files are all in 24bit/44,1Hz, recorded in sonar 6 or 7. And I'm currently using sonar 8. Anyone having an idea of what the problem is and how to solve it?

its loooks like your lacking a codec n your pc. Using a direct show decoder like this below may help you find whats missing in your pc. I have to ask, You never backed up any audio durring your reinsrtall and drive letter changes to an external hard drive? Or backup after each session or project completion? Backing up is a must. At least 3 back-up are needed to be safe. Obe kept off sit ein case of fire or theft or act of god.. http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow/files/ffdshow/2002-06-17/

Does the file play in any other media players (Win Media Player, VLC etc)? That should tell you if the file is corrupt or if it's a Sonar issue (ie if it plays in media player then the issue is with Sonar, if they don't play you might have a corrupted file). If it does play I think I'd be looking for a samplerate / bit depth setting mismatch, unless the files are a funky format (wmv, mp3, FLAC) then I don't think it's likely to be a codec issue. Good luck! Child

If he wasnt getting a direct show error, you would be right, but with that error showing. it means he has missing codec's. It common when you re-instal windows to mis some codec's. I would make sure XP is up to date and clck that link i gave you to help find the missing codec's. Then you can install them and everytihng should be fine Cj

it means he has missing codec's. Not if he's right about them being 44.1/24 waves.

Thanks! The files don't play in VLC, but I couldn't play other 24bit files there either. It don't play in my Win MP 9 either, same reason I think. (Win WGA-issue. Sorry for not being up-to-date on everything, but my wallet is not very up-to-date.. ) I did backup my projects, but the backup was on the partition I had to reinstall my OS on.. I didn t quite understand the ffdshow I'm not very experienced in command-line stuff. Anyway I'm relaxing a bit with this. I don't think it's many of my old projects I need, and their not recorded with good enough pre-amps. But anyway, I'm thankful for your help!

Not if he's right about them being 44.1/24 waves. Bit, then you would NOT see that direct show error with that error code. So, its not a sample rate mismatch Cj

did backup my projects, but the backup was on the partition I had to reinstall my OS on.. Thats not a back-up. Back-up are supposed to be on seprate things, like another drive or a DVD. The reaosn for back ups is just incase something goes wrong on that drive. Your missing some codec's and that about all. If you do what i said and th find the missing codec and ten install the missing codec's, everytihng will work. Relaxing wont instal codec's into your pc Cj

A little strange though that I can record 44,1/24 in new projects and have no problems. I'll try to find the missing codecs, but seriously, I didn't understand ffdshow at first glance.. Thanks!

Bit, then you would NOT see that direct show error with that error code. So, its not a sample rate mismatch Cj Correct. They are either NOT 24-bit waves or they are corrupt. I doubt it would have anything to do with sample rates. gsoler: download Foobar2000 and use it to determine the actual format of the files. If the files are not physically corrupt, Foobar will be able to read them, tell you what the format is, and possibly rewrite them.

Well, that settles it then - it's a corrupt file. I have yet to encounter any audio file that Foobar2000 couldn't read. gsoler, if you want to send me one of the files I'd be happy to examine it for you. I can try to open it in Audition, which also understands a very wide range of file formats. I can also look at the file header and tell you if it shows any resemblance to a wave file. If you'd like to do that, send me a PM and I'll give you the address of my ftp server.

gsoler, You said, "I did backup my projects, but the backup was on the partition I had to reinstall my OS on.." Then you said, "It was on another HDD than my sonar-projects." What are you trying to say? Your Audio and Projects were on two different drives? That's not a good idea.
