Directing bass guitar recording
How do you get bapu to play what you tell him to play?

If bass players were capable of following instructions, we'd be keyboard players.
In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

Bapu is as Bapu does. (everybody knows that)

That's what I like. A man not afraid to rub another man's belly. That's male bonding. Well, as long as it's a prelude to BECAN.

I prefer to use a U87 about 6" from the mouth, particularly on a largemouth.
Some people call me Maurice SPLAT Pro lifetime, ADK 6 core 3.6Ghz with 32 GB RAM, SSD 1TB system drive, 3 3TB regular drives for samples, recordings and misc. Behringer X Touch, UAD Apollo Quad. 2 UAD2 Quads PCI (i think - inside the box whatever that is), Console 1. More guitars (40??) and synths (hard and soft) than talent. Zendrum!!!

Ed's such a technically accomplished bass player, albeit with a flair for imrovisation and innovation, I find it a pleasure to work with him. "You hum it Straummy" he'll say, "and I'll be able to come up with something appropriate". Hah! Of course, he's also so modest that 'appropriate' means the song will end up with a stunning bassline. On occasion, he'll use his Alembic, which to be honest, I didn't even know he had. To sum up, it's an honour and a pleasure to be personally associated with any piece of music that Ed has contributed bass to. I'd give me right arm to be as talented as that guy to be sure. And what a guy - not just a master of his chosen instrument, but a funny and intellectual chap to boot. The cheque cleared this morning Baps
