Dirty Dauber (by Kayehl) Remix

Here's a very nice jazzy piece Kayehl sent me ages ago to set to my nicest instruments - these are from Reason and the drums are from Addictive.

Props to him, it's a very nice bit of work - and I mean literally - it's a BIG midi.

It's called Dirty Dauber, that's some type of wasp, and I can see one darting around over a hot summer field. :)

Top song in the player on my site under Songs (see sig)

I can only imagine what its like taking a raw midi file and filling in the sounds by doing all the softsynth routing. What was it about 30 diferent midi tracks? it sounds like you got my sloppy quantizing fixed. Good choices of sounds for the various guitars, brass, drums etc.

Wow--good job, both of you! This is great! Sounds like a dream come true, Kevin--you just write the music and let someone else do all the rest of it, which, to me, isn't nearly as fun!

Well, I'm jealous! Although it is getting a bit easier to do the rest of it than it used to be!

So, Kevin did all the midi notes, and you Rob, put in all the patches? Sorry, I'm not very midi litterate.. Anyways, I like this piece as it's very 'open' sounding. Lot's of space in a sense that it allows all the instruments to be heard, nothing cluttered at all. Very good. I've always liked this particular style of jazz, but could never play it.

    This is a cool arrangement.

Some good thinking outside of the loop with the sound choices, a love the bass an octave low, and that sax sound is just plain RUDE!

    I'm lovin' yer work here.

Thanks Larry - you got it. i composed the piece, then saved it as a midi file, not a cakewalk file, which drops out all my softsynths and effects leaving only the raw midi data. i email the midi file to Rob, who opens it in sonar, reads the track names and starts picking out the best synths and sounds to assign to each part. All he's got to go on is the list of names like "guitar 1, bass 1, snare drum, toms, saxophone, etc."

Thanks Jonbouy, Thanks Shad, i appreciate both of you taking time to listen and put in a good word !!!

Rob, Kevin, my yard is full of those little half dollar sized craters made by those nasty little mud daubers. I need to grow more grass so they don’t have so much dirt to work with, but with watering restrictions due to a draught, that’s not gonna happen anytime soon. Nice MIDI work and realism, both of you.

Yeah, a mud dauber, they're nasty, and they build little mud houses to live in, usually on your house, like up under the eves? Nasty little wasps. The song is actually pretty cool, very "eclectic", if not electric, made me flop about like an epileptic. This song has a large and round butt… A lot of bottom going on here, I liked it.

Hey Kevin, I just realized I forgot all about the fact it shouldn't be 120 BPM but 134 - totally slipped my mind, just noticed that in an older version I was archiving. I'll correct that, and maybe up those ultra-low bass parts an octave? Up to you....

I am also updating the player on my website, and it's easier to convert everything to video - instead of just a splash screen with the file info, can I use it for a little animation?

yes, try it at 134 and shift the bass up an octave and let's see what that sounds like! ive noticed that a lot of synths will play the same midi in different octaves, youd think they would all agree!

you're saying you want to make a video to go with it? that sounds cool, do you have some sort of automatic video animation program?

    Yo Rob,

Another cool, tight instramental short built around a punchy hip drum part. I like the way the melodic stuff is thrown out in in bits and stabs. Fake sax is detailed and brassy.

BTW, in the southern US, we refer to these insects as 'dirt daubers' or 'mud daubers'. They seem to like making their mudsplat nests in and around your porch so they can conspire with the mosquitos to irritate you when you're in the backyard.

    Cheers,

    Bert
