Disappearing Audio
Does anyone else have issues with audio suddenly going away? Sometimes I am working on a project and suddenly and without warning, I have no audio. Other audio plays from my PC—just not Sonar. Sometimes, I open a project and there is no audio to begin with. If I close Sonar and open a instrument in stand-alone, the audio is there—so the issue is limited to Sonar. I am running X1 in 64-bit on Windows 7. 8-core machine with 12 GB RAM.

Hiya Bill! What are you running your sound out of and into? (ie Interface to monitors or ?) Can you give us an idea of what and how you have your playback system setup. Thanks

what do you mean by "open an instrument in stand-alone" and the audio is there? are you talking about audio or are you talking about softsynths?

Yeh Reece, That was my thoughts on the soft synths. Ive been having parts of midi drop out on me here and there. (ie-I use a SD3 basic track as a metronome with hihat, snare and kick. Most of the time I really have to mess around to get them all to play nicely together even though its one midi track. One time they might all play as inserted, the next minute maybe just the snare and hats will hit, etc...)

Your issue sounds similar to what I sometimes experience - I can be working away on a project, hitting the space bar to start and stop playback when all of a sudden there is a very strange noise like a squeel and there is no audio. Usually if I hit space bar a couple of times and retrigger playback I get audio again.

Hey, guys. Sorry I didn't give enough info on the first pass. I use a V-Studio 700 for the audio interface. I run ASIO. All audio goes through the V-Studio; meaning, the V-Studio monitor levels control all audio from the PC and if the V-Studio is not powered-on, there is no audio from the PC. Primary monitors are KRK Rokit 6s and Alesis Studio Ones (and Bose headphones). My PC is a Sweetwater Creation Station optimized for the studio: 8-core machine running Windows 7 in 64-bit, Sonar running in 64-bit (but using bitbridge for some things), 12GB RAM. No other applications running simultaneously. No spyware or malware. PC not connected to Internet except to update music software. What I meant about opening something in stand-alone was this: • All Sonar sound stops: soft synths, wavs/audio tracks, audio tracks fed by external MIDI synths, etc. I cannot hear vocals or instruments I already recorded. I cannot hear MIDI or soft synth tracks. Meters in Sonar indicate audio is playing. • Even though Sonar audio stops, audio in general still works. I can play CDs in the PC, hear the sound on videos, and open a soft-synth in stand-alone mode outside of Sonar (e.g., Ivory, Vienna) and hear the sound. PC/windows sounds still play. Internet sites still play audio. It is just Sonar audio that quits. • This is not the same issue as MIDI stopping, which was a problem that somehow went away over the last few months. • I will have to look at my audio buffer when back at the studio. It seems like I recall moving it from 500 to 750, but honestly can't recall without looking. I do use a lot of soft synths (Hollywood strings, Vienna, Ivory, RealGuitar, RealStrat) and some like Hollywood take a lot of memory and CPU; however, this problem happens sometimes in projects that don't have a lot of VIs—and I don't think I use way more than anyone else doing pop music with sweetening or light orchestration. Thanks again for replying.

Ok - I've had this problem before as well. this happens to me when I am trying to use LOOP in conjunction with PUNCH IN recording. I like to make a loop of say 8 measures with puchin recording set to 6 measures inside that loop with 1 measure "buffer" before and after the punchin. there are a lot of times when doing this that the audio just stops working completely after the 2nd loop starts. the only way to get it to work again is to close and restart sonar. I don't know why it happens.

I have a similar problem as Beagle. When i loop a section i have created using the step sequencer and session drummer, the audio starts to disapear after a few repeats. Oddly this only happens on items i have created. If i drag a midi loop in, it repeats just fine.

OK I just experienced something similar for the first time tonight before burning some demos to deliver tonight. I had imported a demo track to Master and even though I have Norton disabled. something in Norton popped up as a info message. I closed it out but before that I LOST SOUND as well. Meters still display and playback still scrolling and everything looks normal, just no sound. I saved and CLOSED the program, reopened the project and sound came back. So try closing all the way out, come back in and see what happens, if that dont get it maybe try a reboot. Power off both computer and VS700. That setup is way beyond me but maybe worth a shot?

I get the same thing. It' really pissing me off. Is this only happening in Expanded? I have to constantly change audio outputs to and from to get my audio back. On my laptop my interface just disappears and I have to reboot. Has this been reported? Is this going to be X1's "motorboating"? If so Cakewalk will deny it exits for about a year and you'll have to upgrade to the next version to get it fixed. Then it will be something else. I think Cakewalk is just not interested in the pro or semipro market anymore.

Closing and restarting works, but that is a huge pain--especially when I have a project with a lot of Hollywood Strings. I can go to 7-Eleven and come back while it is loading.

It sounds like you guys need to disable exclusive control of the audio device in the Windows audio settings. http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/1467/vista_audio_set_bit_depth_sample_rate_and_exclusive_mode/ Also: -disable "Enhancements" and Windows sounds. -adjust the levels to fulll volume and render. Volume control is for my sonar track/bus faders and my coleman monitor controller. -disable all of the audio interface ports that windows does not need to use. Windows does not need to access my ADAT lightpipes, only my SPDIF. I also disable the HDMI audio devices from my sound card, they aren't used anywhere. EDIT:Disabling these in windows has no effect on access to them via ASIO drivers in Sonar. I'm not sure about the other modes though. Try those settings and see if that changes anything.

Win 7, 64 Bit here. Never had the problem just creeped up (Expanded related?, who knows but that was the last thing I did a while back. I did find that it appears if you try to do things as the transport is in motion, I believe this is when you can trigger the problem. Messing with certain plugins, deleting plug ins, messing with ProChannels settings, etc... is when it appears to me that it happens. Not sure which ones though. Im all Sonar-Nothing Else added to computer. Im running MAudio FTU and monitors directly out of that. I see it is happening with many others out there with much more expensive/elaborate systems as well. So it appears its not an isolated problem.

You say that everything else works sound wise but Sonar. Are you by any chance turning on another application such as windows Media player or what ever after sonar is up and running. If so you may be trying to share drivers with the other programs. This will cause Sonar to lose its connection to the driver. Make sure you don't open another application that requires any kind of sound. See if the problem goes away.

No doubt you've,gone to preffs, and hit apply a few times? It's just,I MUST do this EVERY TIME I open Sonar to get sound with my laptop, and it brings sound back, when all the meters are showing,BUT there is NO Sound. And any thing stand alone works fine, just NO sound with Sonar. With me its computer specific[or seems to be] as my listed desktop,NEVER has had this happen [yet]. Bob
