Disappearing Toolbars helpful thread bump

Last night my toolbars disappeared out of the blue....I could not figure out the problem as I did not think I hit any buttons.  Juuust before I was about to unleash some colorful vocabulary at my cat (he was the only one in the room, and seemed to be mocking me and my dilemma) I came across this on a link of a link from a forum:

"If all your menus are missing the most likely cause is that your menuxml file is missing or corrupt. Perhaps you accidently deleted it (or some utility or tool you use corrupted it).
Try starting SONAR with the SHIFT key held down and allow it to repersonalize your installation. That should restore a corrupt or missing menuxml file:

This solved the problem.  Figured I would bump this incase anyone else runs into the issue.  No need to reinstall or buy a new computer...
-Hope this helps someone besides me
Mike
"by 'menus' it is refering to the "file, edit, options, views, go,...etc" at the top of the page in Sonar

Just to elaborate for future reference:

Under \documents and settings\{user_name}\application data\cakewalk\sonar 8.5 producer you will find a subdirectory named menuxml. By default, there will be a single file there called SONARdefaultmenus.xml.

This is an XML file that defines the default SONAR menus. If you create a custom menu layout (Options -> Menu Editor) in SONAR, those custom settings are saved in a new XML file named for the custom layout you created. For example, if you created a custom menu layout called "Custom Menu Layout" via the menu editor, that would create a new file in the menuxml folder named "Custom Menu Layout.xml".

If the default xml file is missing, SONAR creates it automatically, just like it does with other configuration files such as aud.ini. You'll see a message that "SONAR will now personalize your user settings..." - the same message you saw when you first installed SONAR.

But if the default xml file is present but somehow messed up, bizarre things may happen to your menus. This might include losing one or more menus altogether, or just losing some menu selections. (If you had been using a custom menu layout, and that custom xml disappeared, SONAR just quietly reverts to the default.)

Thanks, Mike, for posting this for the benefit of future explorers.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I'm on Sonar 6, can't find a working xml in my app data anywhere. Menus are gone, shift start does nothing. I think they went away right after I started a session in safe mode. Only ones I have are here...C:\Program Files (x86)\Cakewalk\SONAR 6 Producer Edition\Menuxml

I fired up my old laptop running XP and could only find those files as well. Menus are runnng fine on the XP laptop but still gone on my Windows 7 64bit. I can reinstall if I have o but so afraid of messing up plugin settings. Any ideas? Like I said shift start is doing nothing...

IIRC, there is a "full screen mode" which strips the top off the app for more space. F11 comes to mind, but not sure if that is the correct key.

ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.

Thank for the idea but no luck. Even some of my right context menus are gone, for example I can't bypass bin FX or set loop points. Seems to be the menu xml but I don't know where it is in (very old) Sonar 6, all the answers I find are for 8/8.5. Nothing I do will rebuild it, so strange.

LpMike75 Try starting SONAR with the SHIFT key held down and allow it to repersonalize your installation. That should restore a corrupt or missing menuxml file:

I thought holding SHIFT while starting Sonar opened in "Safe mode" not personalize.
that's holding down CTRL isn't it ?

Holding down SHIFT while opening a project invokes safe mode

Holding down SHIFT while starting SONAR invokes personalization restoring missing files to the user directory

Holding down CTRL+SHIFT while starting SONAR invokes full personalization restoring SONAR to factory defaults by overwriting files in the user directory and resetting some registry entries.

Thanks for the advice but holding down shift or control shift doesn't do anything to help me. I guess I'll have to reinstall. Anybody know if I lose my plugin settings when if I reinstall?

Welp, reinstall still didn't fix it. :(
