Disk partitioning question...

Quick question...  I had a failing operating system (OS) drive and ended up cloning it to a new drive with Acronis (True Home 2012).  The problem is that the OS drive is only using about 80 GB and the new drive is 2 TB.  After many failed attempts to pre-partition the 2 TB drive and THEN get the OS over I was finally able to do it by using bootable media and cloning - however it wouldn't let me add additional partitions!

So, here's the question:  Now that I have a 2 TB C: drive, is there anyway to partition it without messing up the OS that's on there?

I'd like to keep the OS separated from data areas...

Easiest and safest is to partition the disk before you clone the old drive to the new partition, but it is possible to do it after the fact as well. You do not say what OS you are using, so it is difficult to recommend a method. Win 7 has the capability to do this under disk management. The basic concept is to shrink the existing partition and then create a new partition in the free space you have created. In Win 7 you can do it from within the OS.

or this piece of freeware should do the job

I've got Windows XP Pro.  I'll see if the disk management area can do this, but I'm thinking of adding one of my 250's as a dedicated OS drive instead anyway.  My "fun" task for the weekend - yay...

XP will not shrink your partition. But the free software I linked to will do the job. The main reason to keep your OS/programs seperate from data is so that you can make an image of the system that is small enough to manage as an fast restore if your system crashes or gets corrupted. Acronis will just compress empty space to nothing so the image will not be significantly larger with empty space, but if you add data to that partition it will enalrge your image unnecessarily. Best to do the shrinking before you put too much on the drive, but leave enough space for programs you might add in the future. Or if you have a plethora of drives just leave it empty.

Yeah...  Just looked to see if XP's disk management could handle it and, as you said, it can't.  I'll check out the software from your link now - thanks!

Just wanted to follow up - I did get that software and, eventually, got everything to work.  Thanks!
