Dislike Of X2 - 8.5.3 Install Question

If I try to install 8.5.3 while X2 is still on my PC will it cause problems?
Should I just wipe X2 off the PC to play it safe?

Mike just try it. If it does cause problems with X2 then you can uninstall X2. You don't want to use it anyway.

You shouldn't have any problems due to all versions are installed into their own folders.

    Thanks John.
I know that certain things wind up being shared and that's why un-installing previous versions is not a good idea unless you do it before the new version is installed.
I was just wondering if the same holds true for old over new installs.

It'll probably be fine but to be safe you could just create a restore point. If it does screw up just restore and then uninstall X2. Cheers.

Yes, I'm pretty certain the same holds true. The 8.5.3 install will probably overwrite any shared items. But like John suggested, you could just try it and see what happens. Worst case is it will take more time to clean up and reinstall again if it doesn't work.

    Sorry for the repeat post.

You can also back up the drive by imaging it first with software such as Acronis True Image. That's what I do to ensure that I don't get stuck with a messed up system when installing different things.

If you do end up uninstalling X2 use CCleaner to do it (back up all you projects first though). I'm not sure how thorough the Sonar uninstaller is but CCleaner will flush out everything associated with a program. Lots of included uninstallers leave little bits and bytes behind. That said though you could reinstall X2 after you do all this so you can work in 8.5 then if you want to get at the fancy stuff in X2 you can just toss the project into it and polish things up. Cheers.

If it overwrites the plugin manager, the impact may not be immediately obvious. There was a bit of work done in X2a to address issues with VST plugins. Problems may not show up until you add more plugins or reset and rescan existing plugins. If it were my machine and I wanted to return to a previous version, I would remove the newer version(s) first.

    Acronis True Image.

Yeah, never used it myself but it's supposed to be the most reliable back up software out there.

    Re:Dislike Of X2 - 8.5.3 Install Question 2013/03/10 15:07:40 (permalink)
In my view an install of 8.5.3 will work because even if it overwrites things it will be the right versions for 8.5.3. The OP is doing this so he can use the older version instead of the newer version. His real problem are projects made with X2 they will have problems opening in 8.5.3.

However I believe there is a simple fix after the install of Sonar 8.5.3 he may wish to reinstall X2.

I don't have any other Sonar version on my Windows 8 system. However I have Sonar 8.5.3, X1 and X2 on my Vista system and they all work. But I installed them in the proper order.

Scott. Yes I have Acrons, Thanks

And Beep, If you go to Digifreq.com, in the forums there are instructions on how to completely remove sonar from the reg and all.

    Chuck I'm using Windows 7 64bit and a Focusrite Scarlett 18i6.

I really wish there was an issue I could ask for help with but every time I open X2 it's something new and the problem from the day before is all better.
It just seems like random chaos.

Just 2 weeks ago I went with wiping the system clean, reformatting the HD and doing a fresh install of only the things I use.
I was sort of hoping that something went corrupt during the install.........seems not.

I know that so called OS optimization's are for the most part not necessary in this day and age but if anyone knows of some, I'm game at this point.

And I have not rolled back yet.
I'm going to give it a week or so and try any suggestions that people throw at me.
It's not like I use X2 to make money with.

I also plan on going to Danziland and picking Danny's brain.
He might be able to shed some light on my issues.

Oh, and pray for X2b so show up.

I used the Sweetwater Optimization Guide as recommended to me by Cake tech support.

    http://www.sweetwater.com...Optimization_Guide.pdf

However there is one step that should be left off because it's a process Sonar needs so check out jm24's post in the thread I posted right before I did my optimization.

My system works pretty well with X2 but there still are some bugs. This should however help eliminate some non X2 related issues. Cheers.

If you need it sure. I left a couple essential startup programs enabled. I think you can manually start that type of thing. I ain't smart enough to explain that stuff though.

It's amazing how much you wind up learning about PC's when you get into this.
When I started with this recording stuff I never owned a computer so I had to learn all this and how to use Sonar all at the same time.

    Fun stuff huh?

There should be no problems installing 8.5. Your X2 installation will still be fully functional, plus you'll have the added benefit of being able to use the X2 plugins (e.g. Studio Instruments) in your 8.5 projects. You'll also get the bug fixes for V-Vocal and Sonitus plugins.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Yea Mike, I installed Sonar 7 after X1 and X2 were installed so I could troubleshoot a VST issue. I like to have one version set up without any vst so I can recover a project. No issues with X2 or Sonar 7 with the few plugs I have installed in it.

I think it is one of the better features of using Sonar.  That it seems 100% happy to co exist beside all versions. Most software ( all others??) will overwrite and delete any older versions and automatically too! , And some would go" There is already a newer version of this software installed" and cancel install on you.
And as a die hard 8.5 fan, I say it's still worth having it on board if your just trying to get on with it.  My take is I would need a much better computer fist before I would try and upgrade. And a few weeks of downtime to re learn a new DAW. ( I tried the x1 Trial )
