Distant Horizon

Hi everyone,

I've just finished my third solo album. It's taken three years to complete and is being replicated at the moment. I hope to take delivery this week. I was very fortunate to get support from a high end audio company who wanted to be involved with the release of the cd and they have paid for the printing and replication.

This track "Distant Horizon" was the last track to be recorded and we decided to film the actual takes. It was then put together to use as a bit of a promo etc.

The song was recorded and mixed in Sonar Plat. I used a lot of the soft synths (Z3ta 2.2, Rapture, Dimension Pro) for all the keyboard parts. I also used some of the ambient SFX from these synths. The final mix was mastered in Adobe Audition using the Fab Filter mastering tools.

Electric guitars were recorded directly through the Line 6 Helix as well as the bass guitar. Nylon string and steel string were recorded with an SE2200 condensor.

I used SM57s and a D112 on the drumkit.

I hope that you enjoy.

Cheers,

Peter.

Epic! I did quite enjoy though I think some might struggle at its length, good job all round, thanks for sharing.

    Thanks, Wookie.

Yes, I realise that the length might not appeal to everyone but it's not for radio and definitely not commercial so I thought, why not?

This is amazing stuff and what I WISH I could do. Sound, production, arrangement, playing is just top notch. Brilliant. And I for one DO like long tracks.
One question: Did you actually record the acoustic guitar with the mike that far away ? I'm struggling with noise myself and I even have the mike so close I can barely play.

Thanks SR, yes, the acoustic and nylon was recorded like that. When you say you're getting noise, what kind of noise? I'm recording in a soundproof booth so there's very little noise.

Basically static. When I record the acoustic I have the input all the way up and I still have to use gain or normalize to get to a decent volume and so I get the high frequenzy noice. As if my mike just isn't sensitive enough.

Excellent track Peter.....performances/mixing/production were all just a wonderful treat to my ears. I've always loved your style of music....very enjoyable to listen to. Of note, I also have a Takamine nylon acoustic/electric....great tone they have.
Well done on this project and wish you the very best on your new CD. Is it at CDBaby this will be sold?

I love my Takamine but it really needs a decent setup.

I always love watching your "making of" videos.   The material, performances and mixes are consistently top notch, and seeing the tracks performed in the studio just reinforces the talent level.    Aside from the main melody (and its variations) that has a great classic feel to it, in this one I particularly enjoyed hearing and seeing how the different guitars were used.    What was the SE2200 plugged into?

I did quite enjoy this. I like everything about it. It seems weird hearing someone use a pick on a nylon string though. The mix is great. It is too long though, at a party it wouldn't matter much.

fantastic mix and great video. i suppose my only negative is that the music is a bit old-fashioned, in the nicest possible way. i'm sure there's plenty of variation in the rest of the album.

Wonderful mix and arrangement -- it sounds so good.  All of the playing is terrific, especially on that gibson -- beautiful tone and your playing is so fine.  Also, the drummer is very good.  I enjoyed this and I hope you get some traction on your album.

@ Human rock, yes it was a bit tricky but there have been some amazing developments regarding the album.

A very "high end" hi if audio supplier has got on board and provided sponsorship for the cd. They were very impressed with the production and would like to use it as a demo album for their home theatre systems.

This has allowed me to splash out a bit with the artwork, booklet and overall package.

    Very chuffed.

Fantastic production from start to finish.   Really like all the different styles, transitions, et. al..  Your guitar playing is tasteful and melodic throughout, not over the top...   The drummer is awesome too.  Obvious you gents are really enjoying the process and that is reflected in the video.

I love the ambiance of this.  It transitions nicely from quiet to rock and back. Quite relaxing.  Especially love the sound of the nylon string.  Long, but you keep it interesting throughout.
