Distant Towers, "Westward Bound" 3-14 update

****3-14-11
A new version of the song has been uploaded.  Preston did some drum tweaking to get a better sounding set of tracks and Tom mixed them back into the song.  We'd appreciate your input on the new drum sound within the song.  Thanks to those who have already chimed in!****

Good afternoon Cake-ettes!

As it turns out, we had a few tunes kinda run together as 2010 turned to 2011.  Tom was out of town for a month and so they are finishing up all bunched together.  This is the second of three and it is called Westward Bound.

We hope that you will put a critical ear on this one as well as letting us know what you think in general.

You can find it on our website:
http://distant-towers.com/DTlatestsong.htm

Or on Soundclick:
http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=10299297

The guilty party:
Tom McCaffrey:  Lyrics, vocals, mixing, bass, synths, audio loops.
Preston Richardson:  Drums, percussions and I believe he slipped some synth stuff in on this one as well.
Tony Wood:  Guitars

Thanks for all your kind words and critiques on our last tune, Storybook.  We appreciate the input very much.

    Man, that's hot, Tony.
It kicks into high gear right off the bat, and got me boppin'.
This is a very crisp mix, and fits the overall vibe.
I really like that offbeat guitar on the left, but might be tempted to take it down a db or two.
This is the sort of song that would be saved for the encore of a live show.

Wow, loved this.  One of the things I've liked about all the DT material I've heard is that you guys are always full of musical surprises, and this tune was no exception.  Nicely laid out and felt more like 3 mins than 6.

I agree with Rob's comment on the left side guitar, and (just a thought here) I was wondering how it would sound if you varied the panning throughout the tune???  Great job though, guys!

another totally different sounding track. an airier feel than some of your stuff. how you integrate the main riff and BV is excellent. great playing all round.

    Hi, Tony,

Wow, this really has a very different and really cool vibe to it, and the performances and mix are truly stellar!

I really like the bright guitar on the left side and think it adds a different "feel" to the whole overall mix.  Preston's drums are perfect with Tom's full, round bass and your well chosen guitar tones, and the vocals are amazing.  The dynamite sounding harmonies almost remind me of early stuff from The Byrds, which to me, is a really good thing.

You DT guys are really cranking 'em out like hotcakes, and they're always great, nice work boys!

Thanks for the input guys!! Great call on the guitar left on the verse...Thanks Robert!!!

Once again we had a ball putting this together and we're really enjoying the new found friendship and talent of Preston "Presto" on the kit....As Tony pointed out this is the 2nd in a batch of 3 new tunes that kinda took us in a different direction (for us anyway)...but we're really enjoyed the different textures.

Thanks again for your good ears and timely suggestions and we always take them to heart!

    You guys are prolific!

The one thing I am always amazed at with DT is the mixes. Every song is just unbelievable in its recorded/produced quality. Amazing. You guys nail it every time.

Song-wise, I can't say anything different. I'm mostly basing my judgment on songs you sent me for our radio broadcasts years ago but I like the fact that you mix it up. Everyone has already said exactly what I wanted to say.

    Nice work guys.

Aaah man - where's this post gone - this is the second one today that's vanished into the ether.

Anyway........liking the new direction fellas - I can hear a bit of  flower power and some don't fear the reaper type vibe going on here mixed in with the DT signature sounds. Who'da thought it ? Maybe just me, but I like it anyway.

You know, I listened to this yesterday and must have not hit the "post message" button.  As usual I talked about how unique you guys are, innovative and what great tunes you write.  I'm not sayin' it again.  LOL!  It never ceases to amaze me how you come up with so many different sounding tunes.  Great talents do that and that describes you guys to a tee.

    1st Listen:

Mix and Production: 9/10  (Dominant element seems iffy)
Message Hooks: 6/10 (maybe 7-8/10 as the song progresses)
    Performances: 10/10
    Arrangement: 10/10

Personally, I love whats going on at 3:30+ and would've loved to have heard that sooner. (1st listen).  Those ambient vocs.

Many elements feel like 'jamming' redundantly ... and may tax my patience in the studio here ... but on the road they'd be most excellent.

Of course this is freaking awesome!

Great upbeat tune. I like the guitar that comes in behind the beat. On my nearfield monitors, the vocals need to come forward some, maybe roll of some of the lows and boost the mids and highs. In my very amateur opinion.  Very nice guitar work. Solid songwriting. I like it.

On that trailing guitar...Did you reduce it some? it seems to sit better than I got on my initial impression. it seems to be moving about, too ( per Philz' suggestion). If my mind isn't playing tricks on me, it's a nice, but subtle, change.

Terrific.  Wonderful song, excellent performance, perfect vocals, and crystal clear mix.  I particularly like the hard panning L & R.  It really opens up the sound.
