Division 7

Here's a new one. It's a shortened version of an album track, I've cut out some stuff at the front end which doesn't make sense outside of the context of the album

First off, sounds great. Well balanced and good textures. Listening on my system without room correction, nothing sticks out, which means good mixing skillz at work.

That initial snare roll was a bit loud and could be softened a bit with some reverb.

There is a hint of distortion once things get loud and the drums come in a bit awkward.

    Really good guitar playing, Jonesy.

That's amazing stuff Colin, what a great track. Tons to get your head around, this is going to take several listens, which I'm quite happy to do. Loads of influences popping out, like a melting pot of my favourite bands, absolutely love it.

Great stuff.  Like James said, lots of influences in this.  I don't hear the issues that jamesyoyo mentioned, but he has the golden ears.  I must listen to this some more and then tell my friends about it.

I love it. Classic prog at its best, even down the organ. Brilliant. I am also not hearing James' issues, and quite like the snare sound. Everything is tight and clear, great tone on the guitar.

Very well put together piece of leather. Very professional sounding. I can hear what  jamesyoyo is saying about that first snare roll and to my ears it does stick out a bit, but I can accept that as an artistic choice rather than something that needs to be fixed. I ask myself, why does it stick out? What is that part trying to say? Is it a warning? A boundary? A call to arms? I can accept that it has a function that I do not understand. It might be a totally different song if you changed that half a second of sound.

Chappel - as I said in my opening post, this "single" version of the song is a cut down version of a lengthier album track.

In the context of the album it kind of makes sense to me as what goes before is a bit sleepy, a bit dopey, and this snare roll is indeed a wake up call.

Great comments from everyone, I'm blown away by the generous nature of you guys (& gals)

Great sounds. I see how you're able to get that loudness and still maintain your dynamics (as you were telling me on my thread). That's awesome! I cannot listen to prog rock all the time, but this very much reminds me of Dream Theater. Guitar leads are awesome.

    Thanks Jason, much appreciated

mgh - thanks also, and I've no idea about the album! This thing has been dragging on for so long, it's a bit of a millstone and now contains a fairly eclectic bunch of style & genres.

Got a lot of vocals to do. A lot of instrumental beds are laid down but several others are still in the compositional phase.

Plus, we don't have as much time as we used to - becoming grandparents for the first time was a shock to the system - and the day job still intrudes with monotonous regularity!

But, we'll get there one day. As soon as anything is close to being "finished", I'll post it up

Much like a Tangerine Dream tune.  Love the organ tone, what are you using there?

    Well done.

this is really a stellar piece of art. a gem.  complicated yet executed w/ natural flow.  love the bass sound.  the 7/8 time sig is awesome and it seems it alternates between 7/8 and  6n-a-half/8. that is slick.  guitars remind me of Andy Summers meets Robert Fripp of King Crimson.  A+

This is a good track the mix sound well balanced with good dynamics.

My only personal observation is that some of the drum candy becomes a bit repetitive but I think you covered that in your reply to Chappel.
Nice all in all thanks for sharing

I love a good piece of prog... and this is a good piece of prog. I was only listening on laptop speakers so can't comment on the mix, but the music and the arrangement were both superb.

    Cheers,

Hey guys, your comments are truly appreciated and above all, I'm glad so many of you enjoyed it!

Daryl, the organ was the B4Xpress which I got as a freebie, along with the FM8 & Pro53 several years ago.

Which reminds me - I haven't got them on my new rig yet (all Midi was frozen prior to migration)

Thanks again one & all, It's great getting this sort of reaction & feedback

Colin, Now that's what I'm talking about. What a great production. 10 stars + Wow!! That takes me down Hiway 84 of my last trip. Talk about placement, everything fit together perfect and the ending was awesome. Very, very nicely done. This deserves an award. Thanks for sharing. Enjoyed!!!! Peace be with you. Blessings, John
