Do I need an external eSata "sample" HD?

Gateway E 475M Laptop with: C2D 2.0, 80 gig 5400 rpm HD, 4 gig ram, Vista 32 SP1, Sonar 8 PE, Native Instruments Komplete 5, TruePiano. Hardware io = Novation X-station with Line 6 TonePort D.I (as dongle).

Kit will be a portable solo instrument. However; I do have it in mind to run say GTR 3 simultanious with say an instance of Kontak 3 or Dimension Pro.

The laptop is freshly prepared -ready for software installs. The X-Station arrives by way of brown truck later today. I had planned on getting a eSata PCMCIA card along with an HD enclosure stuffed with a Hitachi 7200 rpm 329 gig size=2.5. But, is it necessary for how this will be used?

Also, 1 more question. In the event I do make this sample disk and do hit the record button; is it better to print audio data to the OS disk or to the sample disk? Thanks. Leonard

    Hey Leonard,

What type of interface does your motherboard have to your hard drive. If it is SATA then I would use the 2.5" Hitachi 7200 rpm as your OS hard drive. OK so you would have to reinstall everything, but that wont take too long.

Is the hard drive one of those new hitachi travelstars as I've just bought myself one (320gb) 5400rpm and a Western Drive 320gb but with an ide interface.

If you are going to run your new drive externally then I'm not sure if it is possible to run a 7200rpm drive on a single usb port.

I would personally put your fastest drive in your laptop (and write to that one) and just use the spare one as a back up drive.

Hope this helps and that I may have answered some of your questions

    Im getting a 1Tb WD Elements USB2 with 7200RPM, soon.. I hope...they exist.
    Its for back-up.
For direct recording USB2 is too slow i think. U should be able to clone ur HDD(bootable 1to1)..with programs like Acronis or O&O disk-image programs.

I didnt really understand the questions, btw. But i hope it helps..

Thanks, guys. Laptop OS hd is sata.

Lots of folks here stream tons of samples with tons of effects added to each sample. They need external eSata drives for their laptop rigs.

That ain't how I roll. Not even close. I'm just looking to play one instrument live. Heck, I'm not even recording. Sonar will be loaded to provide access to all those great VSTs. I'll use NI instruments in stand-alone. So..

Can I get away with loading samples onto my OS drive? or.. Is it necessary I suck it up and pop for something like this?

    Here's the HD
