I don't know anything about PCs and am a newbie with Sonar, which is unbelievable when you figure I have had this since Sonar 7PE was released, but I managed a two year renovation to a 125 year old house and then a new job, then grandkids and yada, yada, yada.
Anyway I am in it now, and when I bought the stuff years ago I thought I was golden, but...not so. Although I meet and maybe exceed the "system requirement", it is not good enough. I just tried to mix a 12 track analogue mix, using a bunch of host SW plug-ins and it is very slow in its response to changes.
I guess what I mean is, there are glitches, hesitations, lock ups...as if I am really stressing the cpu. I used a little compression and eq in each track, then a little, compression, eq and reverb on the drum buss, then on the master I used a little compression, reverb and eq. Then finally I tried to use LP64 to finish it off.
I worked on it for an hour and it sounds o.k., but it was a pain in the butt, because of the glitches, hesitation, locks ups, etc. In the end it worked so that I could test my new room, which I acoustically treated and added new monitors too, but wow, I was really shocked, as I thought I would be fine, as my laptop met or exceeded the requirements. I even upgraded to a TI chipset for the laptop, which helped, but geez. And believe me; I have optimized this laptop to the enth degree, using all the great information on this forum and others. I even upgraded the Bios etc.
So, again, I don't know what I am doing and am still learning alot, but one thing I "think" I learned is that I need to get a new tower. After I get the new tower from "Studio Cat", I am hoping to get Alloy2 and Ozone 5 and might even consider upgrading to X3, but really don't know if that is necessary or not, as I am not sure of what to expect with regards to what I gain, and of course I use the laptop for capturing in a different location and then use another laptop (soon to be replaced by new tower from Studio Cat) to mix down.
So what happens when I capture audio on the 32Bit Sonar 7PE and move it (via external HD) to the new 64Bit X3 tower? I “think” it will be fine, from what I have read. Don’t really know just yet. I hate not knowing what I am doing, but love learning as I go along…LOL
