depends on what subject you're discussing.

physics say that opposite magnetic poles attract.  so yes.

men and women?  it's much more complicated than that, and yet much more simple than that at the same time.  my wife and I are very much alike in most ways.  we rarely disagree on things.  but she has different hobbies than I do.  from an outside person's perspective, we are not "opposites" but we are very much "the same" and we've been together for nearly 22 years and "til death do us part"

My wife is the likable one.  I'm the different one.

I'm also not the opposite of anything, so I posess absolutely no attractive powers whatsoever.

Crg lol...Thanks for your thoughts. I have been mulling over this for a few days. Probably a good song theme.

When it comes to people I think it is very hard to find true opposites. If they exist at all.

Things start out really simplistic in similarity and build complexity as you go, but even if you have a lot of dissimilar attributes there are usually always a few similarities as well.

It could go something like this, from most basic to most different.

Human? Y/N. Male/female Y/N. genetic disposition both race and temprament.....the commonalities are still there at the 3rd and 4th levels but  harder to see. Interests and certain long term ingrained behavior patterns make us more like some and less like others. The unquantifyable essence of who we are(our soul).

Outside conditoning through media and our inner circle can also add to who we are. I don't ever see anyone belonging to humanity being a perfect opposite.
It is a shame that a lot of people consider themselves opposite to another person when the facts they base that assumption on have to do with something they see as big but is really a small part of the person. In many cases the similarities out weigh the differences even in the so called "most opposite" cases.

Looking in the mirror forces us to see that we are more similar to those we don't like or don't think we have anything in common with than many will admit.

We are not all the same but neither are we different at the same time. As we go through life we will either go through a place someone else is now going through or we have already been there.

We have been built for compatibility IMO,so we might go toward the person who has what we don't to make a "team". This can be personal as with two people or it can be a large group made up of a lot of different abilities.......

People have opposite opinions on an issue. Even these can make good teams sometimes because maybe the best solution is a 50/50 answer and neither opinion was totally right roight.

I'm not saying there are no absolutes. But since they are absolute there are no changing those no matter what anyone thinks. IMO one of the most positive things to come from having an absolute blow your world away is personal growth................ok I'm ramblin' again...sorry.

LOL...nice thought but really....motorcycle exhaust pipes alone can blow that theory.
Many people are so fickle they can be opposite from themselves on any given day....epecially kids.

Oh yes....the motorcycle pipes discussion......that still doesn't make us opposites....anyways you said your pipes were discrete right roight?

An opposite is something totally 180 degrees the other way from something else...different opinions are not indicators of a total lack of commonality...

No. I said my pipes weren't loud and I rode my bike with discretion. (since you asked)
I also mentioned the first thing I did before the bike left the dealer was change the pipes.
I could be very annoying should I choose to be.

I know the definition of opposite and I disagree that opinions can't be so.
To what degree of opposition? Yes that varies and yes it can easily reach 180 but
who are the ones that determine that?
BUT, if I take you literally; "An opposite is something totally 180 degrees the other way from something else" then I must ask, how do you define opposite when "somethng" is "someone"?

It is not. Oh yes it is. No it's not. Oh yes it is. ....probably much like we'd sound
like talking about my exhaust and I'll say our opinions are as opposing as they could get.

I also believe that our opinions are indicators used in our evaluation and determination
of compatibility. Sometimes it takes years for two people to recognize that.

But....we just see this differently...to what degree? Doesn't matter really.
    - opposites attract.....not sure I buy into that...it must be defined first for
    me to make a determination.

Interesting way to get song ideas....I wouldn't have thought of that...but I'm not a lyricist.

I don't know what they see in us frankly

I have never understood what women see in us, other than purely practical uses such as opening stuck pickle jars. And any dirty, sweaty tasks that, even if they might be easily managed by a woman, would be beneath her.

But I'm not about to question a good thing. I'm just glad they tolerate us and our untidy habits and muddy shoes, clueless insensitivity, crass humor and childlike fascination with expensive toys.

As for being opposites, my wife of 35 years is from another culture and English is not her first language. She is industrious, I am lazy. She grew up poor, I grew up without ever experiencing hunger. She loves to cook; I love to eat. She prefers Elvis over the Beatles (I know, go figure!). She has also enriched my life in ways I could never have foreseen when we first met. Do opposites attract? I'm not sure, but I can testify that opposites endure.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Spacey- BUT, if I take you literally; "An opposite is something totally 180 degrees the other way from something else" then I must ask, how do you define opposite when "somethng" is "someone"?

If it were possible for people to be opposites completely the above rule would apply. In order for that to apply to "someones" and not "somethings" two people would need to be exactly opposite in every knowable way.

I believe that there is enough commonality in mankind to cancel out that theory.IMO noone is a polar opposite of anyone else.

If we were to categorize the different parts of what makes you yourself, like personal likes and dislikes we could get to opposites in those areas. If I like freezing cold and you like boiling hot, then we would be opposite in that area.

My thoughts were concentrating more on the commonalities we share as opposed to our differences. We all laugh,we all cry,we all sleep....we all share the same basic DNA. We are all part of the human condition.

Here is how I seen us in the thread about loud Harley pipes. You like motorcycles, I like motorcycles. I like low volume pipes and I gathered you liked low volume pipes because you used them.

So how were we different in opinion?

I agree totally about our opinions being a way to gauge  compatabilities. The more important opinions would only be considered. Opinions that direct lifestyles,beliefs,ambition...those kinds of things. If they liked Havarti cheese instead of swiss cheese, thats totally cool by me :-)

Those Las Vegas weddings are probably not a very good idea.

I'd be willing to bet we have more in common than you think.

I hope I explained myself in a half decent way. I know your a smart guy and you already know what I'm saying here, I just didn't explain it very well.

I think it's a mixture of difference and similarities.

My fiancée and I share similar tastes, the same likes and dislikes, the same passion, the same "anger". But we're at opposite ends of the spectrums in that she is explosive and has this crazy life whereas I'm quiet and flexible, so we both temper each other. She puts life into my life and my own lack of a life allows me to follow her anywhere and through anything.

Anything I can think of she can sing - anything she wants to sing I can write and record. She's home in the spotlight and I'm home a few steps back, providing music. All those years spent polishing my skills for no one, wanting to be a one man band but unable to face the vocal duties and thinking I was the biggest procrastinator are finally history. In return, she has someone who can write music that'll serve her voice. So it's give and take.

And this translates into pretty much every thing in our life.

I think both our differences are crucial in the dynamics. But it's really because we complement each other and we have goals and aspirations in common, something bigger than either of us, something that is US together.

Starise I'm sure not smart enough to know about people and what opposite is to them.
It's interesting and I posted with "off the top" thinking. (so why stop now lol)

People are just to complex to determine if they are opposite or not. I think it takes a lot
of time for a couple to figure that out.

Casual friends is not so hard. Usually shared interests are enough to have a good relationship. I believe that over time the traits that are close to being opposite or 180 will build up and the friendship ends.

LOL..one example...two friends that have a great time shooting pool together but one of them bought a Harley...lol...with loud pipes and now everytime they get together to shoot pool Mike comes by the house with that loud ass motorcycle pissin' off Stars neighbors that are now raggin' him about and all the time Mike is trying to enjoy a game of pool -he has to listen to Star rag his ass about the new LOUD Harley...LOL go figure...opposites don't attract.

Now the thing is; Mike can play a guitar and Star is a great singer...they have mutual friends that work in a band with them. They all agree that they are all brothers of different mothers and happy.
They are not opposites and share the same interests EXCEPT everytime they practice Star keeps raggin about that loud Harley......lol ...it gets so bad that Mike just can't take it and BAM! the band breaks up.

Starise out of all these examples we know that as thinking/feeling humans we will weight out our differences and likes....check and balance...and make a determination of the "degree" of both likeness and unlikeness if that's a word.....I believe when it hits 180 degrees on an important matter it can lead to no good ending and friendship is lost.

    Wars have started over that.
People kill one another over that.
People also live a lifetime in love with many good friends too.

I'm very glad that for over 35 years I've been married to the love of my life.
We know the things in life that each other care for and we are very much alike and we
also know the things in life that we don't share together and give each other plenty of room. I know that we loved enough to take the time to recognize these things and
we grew together rather than apart. I'm also very glad to say it's not over and we still
recognize these things in not only ourselves but others as well. I believe it is smart to
recognize differences and alikes and handle both with respect.
We must remember behind all these "issues" that there is a person that has a heart and
feelings and especially ears...we know how words can be.

Maybe we're attracted to people that simply recognize that one cares enough of others
to avoid hurting them or saying hurtful things and then loud pipes and naggin' just doesn't mean so much.....Like I said...this is a very complex discussion because humans are very complex. But we know that and that's why answering is not so easy.

I hope you get a great song out of this.... my heads fried. :)
