Do the likes of Amon Tobin - Fly Lo - J Dilla - Shadow actually "clear" all there samples?

Hi all,

Looking at documentaries on these kindof Artists, I'm always curious.  They seem to grab samples from anywhere anytime just like others would reach for an instrument.  I would love to know for sure if they ever bothered clearing any samples.

I mean some of them are very successful and would attract a lot of attention.  Some even have great record sales.  They seem to be free in there approach to sampling but I can't imagine them clearing every sample.  It would be more work trying to clear everything then actually producing the tracks in the 1st place.

Does anyone know any more about this subject?  Not specifically "sampling" but more about these Artists themselves and if they ever have issues...

Thanks

If you're selling millions of records downloads there is someone at your record label who's job it is to clear/license all that stuff.

I would say it's some and some, meaning they get clearance where they have to.

If Mooch and I had a band "Some and Some" would be a cool name.

I'll agree with Jonbouy on this one.

Basically when they get caught. Far too often the offending artists have to be sued by the copyright holder to get any sort of credit or compensation. Some of the biggest producers in Pop music are among the worst offenders.
