Do you use a UPS? - Comments please

I have been involved in discussions regarding the merits of isolation transformers when balancing mains lines, generally for equipment isolation against common-mode noise on incoming mains.

However, not being able to readily source a suitable (2KVA) isolation transformer nearby, I am considering a UPS of equivalent size to power the entire studio.

Naturally, this would additionally provide protection against drop-outs and mains spikes, though I would be interested to know if anyone has established whether a UPS is a fair alternative for an isolation transformer in reducing common-mode noise (and of-course choking out differential noise)? Clearly there could be inverter noise from a UPS and perhaps not the ideal solution if this were significant.

I don't normally have an issue except when the studio air conditioner is running (from a separate wall-socket of-course!), or the washing machine on a common circuit, where tiny switching transients are only just detectable when they cycles on and off. I could use a proprietary mains conditioner of-course, though with the recent storms (and accompanying mains fluctuations) we've had lately, I'm developing a leaning towards a 2KVA UPS

Does anyone use a UPS to directly feed their gear and, if so, what are your experiences please?

Many thanks,

Brendan.

I use one and it has saved me many times when the power went out or diped. However, make sure it's over sized (KVA) for your gear. The only computer crash I've ever had where I lost data was when my UPS overloaded and clicked off. If I had been pluged into the wall that day nothing would have happened.

Absolutely - I have a Belkin that has saved my butt on a couple of occasions when the power went out here. I haven't noticed any line noise caused by it - in fact it seems to have reduced noise.

    Thanks guys.

So the UPS is in then

I'm currently looking at a good 2KVA unit, though I didn't want to blindly make such an investment without a little feedback from existing UPS users.

    Once again - many thanks.

    Brendan.
