Documentation Correction

Hi all,

I was perusing Sonar X1's Help for assistance with Record options and noticed the following:

Note:  The Mute Previous Takes option has no effect during loop recording.

In my experience, this is not true.  When this option is enabled, it offers two benefits:  First, any pre-existing clips are automatically muted when recording is initiated - an indispensable feature, especially if you employ a remote control surface from an isolated sound booth.  [Without it, you'd be running to/from the control room to mute prior takes / clips.]  This is true whether recording in loop mode or not.  Second, when loop recording, prior takes are indeed muted until recording stops.

[For the record, I do set my loop points inside the designated punch points to prevent Auto Punch from affecting my pre-existing clips.]

When the option is disabled, those benefits are lost.  Am I misunderstanding something?

This issue is with the definition of "takes", and what happens when Mute Previous Takes is NOT enabled. In SONAR-speak, a "take" involves starting and stopping the transport, as opposed to a "pass" (my term) or "layer"when recording a continuous "take" with looping enabled.

The problem is that disabling Mute Previous Takes does not allow you to hear previous "passes" played back while loop recording audio (e.g. to build a live performance based on layered loops. You only hear previous "takes" after you stop and restart the transport. So in that sense "Mute previous takes has no effect during loop recording"; it's always effectively enabled.

Thanks, Brundlefly.

I figured "takes" to be synonymous with "layers" or "clips."  Makes more sense now.

So, it might be better to say, "Note:  Disabling the Mute Previous Takes option has no effect during loop recording."  Just a thought.

Yes, that would be more precise. The whole section on record modes and looping could use a re-write. I have to stop and think every time what outcome I'm going to get with different options. And it also varies depending on whether you are reording Audio, MIDI driving soft synths, or MIDI driving hardware synths.
