Does Christmas make anyone else feel like a grinch?

I try, I really do but by the time Christmas day gets here I am SO over it. Too much family that stays too long, talks too loud, makes ma mess (grown daughter) lives in Germany visits for three or four weeks... that is just part of it.. it all sort of piles together and I just want to hide or want it to all go away... then later I feel bad. I feel like I should like it all more. Like I should like being disrespected. Like it when grandkids ask for presents that cost 250 bucks, grown kids take everything the wrong way.. like walking on eggshells. Too many women in the house I think. I'll be glad to see January but at the same time I feel guilty for feeling this way.
Sometimes I just want to hide. Is anyone else like this or is it just me? Christmas wasn't like this when I was a kid, or even when I had little kids. I think maybe it is kids that never seem to act like adults... IDK. I really don't. Maybe it's just a mixture of everything.
Oh well, nothing I can do. At least the Falcons won a game, and the Lions are winning! It's not all bad.

Sorry...

Don't feel bad Julien.

I stopped 'doing' Christmas altogether 11 years ago - no family, no friends.

I don't call anyone. I don't go to parties.

I don't buy any gifts anymore.

I don't even wish people Merry Christmas anymore.

I also remember how it was really great when I was a kid too.

But things have just gotten way 'too mental' with it all. Now it even starts way before Halloween, [of which I think there should actually be a law against].

Every year, I just can't help but notice how 'happy' Christmas shoppers are, standing in lines that are way too long, looking hot, tired, miserable, impatient & frustrated, all just to buy things for people they don't really want to buy for, [but 'have to' out of obligation], spending money they don't have on people they don't bother with or just outright avoid the rest of the year.

And that's even before everyone gets together for a supposedly 'joyous feast'.

Seems Christmas is for the stores and advertising agencies now, more than anything else.

Don't feel bad about anything that bothers you, or that you have mixed feelings about, at the very least.

I can assure you that you're not alone.

Sounds to me what you're 'not feeling so good about' is the attitude & behavior of others.

That's my main complaint and trouble with society in general these days - and that's all year long.

I wanted to add that when Christmas day comes and everything's closed, I just go into my music room and work on some tunes - and I'm happy.

Due to a decision by the Aria direction to put the focus on conventions, they've announced last week that they were closing their theatre - meaning that Cirque will be pulling the plug on my wife's show April 30th.

As you may guess, no one around here feels really Christmassy.

That being said, we have tons of projects and lots of openings. But, even though there had been rumours ever since we arrived here, getting the actual new not even 10 days before Christmas was quite a blow.

I can only imagine some of those artists and acrobats who've just bought a house and have newborns and or babies on the way, w/ no green card or nothing... At least, we only have ourselves and our pets to think of, and we have the green cards and all.

As for the rest, I'm looking forward to a quiet Christmas eve with my lovely lady and a dinner and party with a couple of dear friends the 25th. I'm really not a family type of guy, anyway.

I go in the laundromat about a week before Thanksgiving and the radio station they have on is playing non stop Christmas hits already. What is there, about 4 or 5 decent Xmas songs in existence? The very idea that people want to listen to endless Yuletide chuff 24/7 in November is just ridiculous, yet the media is convinced that it's what we want. By December I feel about as Christmassy as Osama Bin Laden.

I have to admit I haven't felt the Christmas spirit since I was about 16. There's something about being expected to be jolly just because of the date that rubs me up the wrong way. And since I'm not religious, what exactly am I supposed to be getting out of it? Besides, I have a strong aversion to party hats. They rustle.

So every year I go into hiding for a few days and make sure I have plenty of work on. My girlfriend goes out to her cousins on Long Island and I keep the business going. Sometimes I will use the excuse of Christmas Day to get stoned since I don't smoke for the rest of the year, and tbh that's the only highlight!

Now let's talk New Year's Eve. I hate that too.

Rain, I am sorry to hear that news. I can understand why you are not in a Christmas mood. I hope all goes well with you and family.
I like Christmas because it has religious significance for me. My son Alex is home from his first quarter at college and our house is bright and cheery. Just had my company party at a nice old restaurant by the ocean.
I am in the local Rotary club and I actually rang bells for the Salvation Army last week! Never did that before.
I think it is a time for giving. The presents are fun but the family part of it still moves me.
To each their own. I just had a birthday and am grateful to be alive and healthy. So many things to be grateful for actually.
Christmas is good in my world. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and that next year brings you peace, love, and opportunities.

I love 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen'..that's about it for Christmas music though.

Being a self-employed gardener in Scotland, this time of year is pretty lean so Christmas and New Year is usually a time of worry and 'making ends meet'. Same for my wife, who runs a horse-riding school with no indoor facility. Not so bad financially this year though, and I'm actually quite looking forward to it..apart from the in-laws arriving en-masse on Christmas Eve...

Sorry to hear your news Rain, hope something turns that around.

It was many years ago that the end of year holiday cycle failed to pull me in.  The wife and I use this time of year as a reminder of how fortunate we are (relative), so we focus on doing things for folks that need a little help.  And the local animal shelter.

Fortunately we live far enough away from our families that nobody visits without it being a planned trip.

You're not alone in the way you feel.  It all seems so phony to me.  People that never smile have big smiles on their faces, but I've always been able to immediately ID the fakes.  It's like a world full of people with fresh Botox treatments.

I do take advantage of sales on the rare occasions that a good deal presents itself, but mostly this time of year is just like the rest of the year for us.  I think it helps a lot that we cook turkeys 3 or 4 other times during the year

Do I feel guilty?  Not in the least.  IMO it's everybody else that should feel guilty for pretending to be somebody they aren't AND pressuring everybody else to do the same.

Re: Does Christmas make anyone else feel like a grinch? 2015/12/22 09:48:45 (permalink)
I gave up on the holiday 20 years ago. The kids are all grown up, so what's the point?

I used to love Christmas music. Now I can't even stand Greg Lake's now-standard tune.

I used to get giddy smelling the Christmas tree, but some decades ago it just became inconvenient trash to dispose of afterward.

The last time I lit the house I just left the lights up all year so I wouldn't have to take them down and put them up again. The bulbs eventually started to burn out until it just looked sad, so they came down for good.

Today is the Winter Solstice, the shortest, gloomiest day of the year. Sunset will be around 4:15 this afternoon, but I won't notice because it'll be overcast and raining all day long.

It's cold. Not cold enough to deliver a blanket of snow to disguise my dead garden, just cold enough to run up my electricity bill. A bill I can barely afford, since my business of 22 years is gradually shutting down and for the first time I had zero income this month. The month/year end just means my health insurance premium and mortgage payment will be due again and Uncle Sam wants another tax payment.  Anniversaries are coming up that I'll have to ignore: the anniversaries of my mother's, father's and sister's deaths, and my wedding anniversary which I struggled so long to NOT forget.

Just when I couldn't feel any lower, I get a bill in the mail for an X-Ray they took of my wife on the day she died. Who orders an X-Ray of someone already in hospice, already on a death watch? Somebody who wants to extract one more dollar from you before you die. Good will toward men? BAH, HUMBUG.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Re: Does Christmas make anyone else feel like a grinch? 2015/12/22 10:32:58 (permalink)
Hi,

I have never been one for this Holiday or a whole lot of other Holidays.

I think that a lot of it had to do with mom, always getting us some new underwear, sox or t-shirts for Christmas, and you always saw your friend with something different, and more fun, at least momentarily. We never got any toys, because the family was not commercialized and we were in the bad side of things in Brazil (really bad - picture of the house in Assis was a hut!), and didn't really get "lucky" until we came to America. I guess we have dad to thank!

As I reach 65, another Christmas or New Year, or birthday, is just another day, that I like to be alone, and on my own ... I can write, I can play WoW, or go turn on the music ... and that is the way I like it. But one could easily say that it is so, because I never had a family, never married, and never had kids ... but then ... i do not think I was suitable material for that movie at all!

When it comes to gifties, though, I am usually all over it, and in some ways, I don't even want the person to know where it came from ... why? The best things in life for me, were the total surprises, and I loved them dearly. I could cry and say thanks and appreciate those I was with, and how they cared. I prefer to be "invisible" in these situations and in employee parties and gifties for our specialty group, I always donate big.

But, as time goes by, the only thing I would love to have is the one that will never happen ... someone that we can sit here and talk about Bunuel, Noe, Lean, Kubrick, and many other movies, and discuss our new work ... and how I have written a complete novel in my head, never done that before, and am working on bringing it down now. I have always, otherwise, been 100% insitinctive, to the point of obstinacy. I totally love the experiments and improvisations, and the new and different feelings they bring to the front, and this is hard to experience in a relationship that has demands that are not artistic "values".

Until something else comes along ... I just keep writing ... playing a little music ... and experimenting ... I have 3 new poems with music ... and while they are rather primitive, they are/were exciting to my inner experience ... that I did them, and will do more!

The rest? I don't know ... can't say! Just OK to be here ... happy ... sure ... why not?
post edited by Moshkito - 2015/12/22 10:45:17

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

I also like Christmas very much as it is definitely a religious holiday for my family and me. We try our very best to celebrate Christmas in the true spirit and this still brings out the same sentiments/feelings as it was when we were growing up.
Sadly, the world outside has lost the true meaning of Christmas and the main focus seems to be only about getting gifts.....the malls and shopping centers are just full of inconsiderate/disrespectful/self centered people stampeding around like a herd of buffaloes.
We do everything we can to avoid malls and shopping centers during the Christmas season (like most in here are doing). We generally focus on giving to families/children whom are not as Blessed as we are and bring some Christmas joy into their lives....i.e. going to hospitals/nursing homes/singing Christmas Carol's to patients/people whom aren't as fortunate as we are....is just a priceless. I always believe that charity comes from the heart and there's nothing more heart-warming when we see the happiness & joy it brings to their hearts.....you can clearly see it in their glowing eyes.......Merry Christmas!!

I'm Hoping to have a mellow low drama Christmas my dog Duke .
We don't have a lot of bread to do anything or go anyplace special so I plan on buying some firewood and lighting up my fireplace for a little Christmas Spirit and ambiance .
I've Lived here almost a year and haven't lit a fire yet ...lighting one sounds like a nice idea .
I hope to jam away on  my Les also ...
It is always in the case because Ole Duke might wag his tail and knock it clear across the room unintentionally ...

Re: Does Christmas make anyone else feel like a grinch? 2015/12/22 17:07:02 (permalink)
I try not to get too negative. I usually spend Christmas Eve by myself, watching White Christmas and then Christmas morning my daughter comes by for breakfast. Later we'll go to see family for dinner. That's about all I can handle. Like most people, each year there seems to be less under the tree and less in the bank.

My favourite thing about the holiday is the fact that the stores are closed. I wish they were closed more often.

I have no idea why big companies seem to love handing out pink slips just before Christmas. It happens every year and it's a real gut punch. I've walked picket lines on Christmas eve and done fire and flood watch while sharing my dinner with a mouse.

There's always something bad for me each and every year. Today it was a phone call telling me that an old friend was murdered last night in a home invasion and his son took a hatchet to the head. I'm not making this up, there's always something bad at Christmas. I choose to be as positive as I can, but it's tough at times.

I wish all of you the very best, I won't be a humbug.

Regards, John

Rimshot
hey Kenny, make sure the damper is open!

@Rimshot ,
Wound up learning that lesson from someone else's  hard learned experience ...still can't even erase it from my mind.
Spent a long weekend in Woodstock NY w my girlfriend of that time .Her brother had a really nice house that he let us use .
We would go out and play in the snow and keep a fire lit the whole time we were there .
The following weekend her roommate drove up from NYC to use the house to unwind ....
She left the damper shut , lit a fire and they wound up having to paint the whole interior ...
I felt real bad for her because that's exactly the same type of innocent mistake I would have made myself ...

Hey Rimshot I wish you Happy Holidays

Hi Dave ,
Yes Sir , I got your memo
I don't even like putting that guitar on a stand . My dog is a leaner ...
Been working on a new tune and it has been nice to pull it out of the case and use it again .
I figured hey ,for what I don't have in cash or family during this Holiday Season , I still have so much to be grateful for...
I figured why not snap a pic to share here in jbow's thread ....even if it is low rezz ....

I hope you have a Wonderful Happy Holiday ,

Kenny

Wow, she's probably very lucky to be alive!  If she wasn't paying enough attention, it's easy to get carbon monoxide poisoning and just go to sleep never to wake up again...

That is a very good point you bring up Craig
To her credit she was a very clear headed person that lives in the moment .... (she taught Tai Chi ) ...
If I remember correctly what happened , she may have unpacked her car and light the fire while she was still somewhat fresh from the 2 hour drive  ..
Yes , thankfully she got on the phone quick and put the fire out ..Nobody was the least bit mad at her...
They were gonna paint the interior of the house anyway since they were thinking of selling it .
I felt bad for her because she took it so hard and beat  herself up for making such a simple mistake...
( I would have made myself at the time )
My GF thought it was funny .At the time she may have even used it as leverage because I was living in my van at the time so I wound up hitting the couch a lot  even though they had a no dudes policy
I got to admit the gal that smoked up the house started resenting me less for couch surfing after that .
Interestingly enough she loved my German Shepherd Rex . Rex was about 5 years old living in the van with me when he wasn't couch surfing
I decided to give the roommate ( Cindy ) Rex , then soon after I drove out to California to start a new chapter in my life ....
That woman love Rex so much ,  and those two had a wonderful life together .
I count giving Rex up to her as one of the smartest things I ever did in my life .

That is the only thing that makes it good Karyn! I have learned to give what I want to give instead of what I'm expected to give. It was a hard lesson. About 30 years ago when we were still making payments from the last Christmas when the new one showed up.. well, that was a big lesson.
It does give joy to give. Thank you.

Everyone... I'm glad I'm not the only one I think it gets confusing and at some point I just turn off all the noise. I really is a nice time of year.

RAIN.... wow. I am sure you will land on your feet. If all else fails, move to Atlanta. It is growing, has great weather, a good music scene between ATL and Athens... and they are building a HUGE park a few miles from where I live Lakepointe, plus a Hollywood company is building a Hunger Games themed virtual reality park (750 acres) with an amphitheater, two hotels, two shopping malls, Lakepointe is building a Bass Pro Shop.. so there are going to be LOTS of opportunities around here.
I hope everyone else lands well, man... I'm sure you will do well though. Cirque should be helping it's people and I bet they will step up as much as they can. They seem to be that sort of company... but, hey! Come on down! You'd be welcome around here!

Keep us posted. I was wondering where you were yesterday. I haven't seen you much lately. Try to not worry, you're young and life always has twists and turns. You are not a slouch, you'll be fine... just keep your wife feeling secure, I'm sure she'll need an extra hug now and then.

jbow, I feel the same way about hiding. I'm not really a social creature. I'm a creature who has learned to be social.

I'm sorry to hear about some of the people here going through tough times. This time can certainly be a sad reminder. If you are close to someone like this maybe reach out to them. I'm dealing with my wife who lost the last parent living this past year. The first parent passed away not long ago. I want to wish everyone here a good holiday, I hope you can still  enjoy it.

For me the holiday really has no extreme significance any more, other than the reminder that we have hope, and hope is good.

The day is historically jaded. At one time it was a long drunken Roman orgy with human sacrifice... Then the Catholic church came along and decided to use the day for themselves calling it Christ-MASS. Then at some point the Protestants adopted it. Somehow over the years it has evolved , or maybe more accurately devolved into what it is now. A catholic saint became St Nicholas and evolved into Santa Claus...and he is the guy most kids resonate with lol. Merchants saw a money making opportunity and this was the catalyst for what Christmas has become.

If the day points a person to hope, then I think that's a good thing. I think hope is always out there. If the day rubs commercialism and the worst of human nature in your face then it has a negative effect. It really is what we make of it.

It comes and goes faster the older I get. Less than a week now and we won't see it again until October  Down time  time at the end of the year is nice!

Best wishes to all!

Thanks, my friend.

You know, the funny thing is that just a few days ago, we were watching a silly movie which takes place in Atlanta and surrounding areas. It's rare that I pay much attention to those things, but it sure made a favorable impression on me as I found myself telling my wife that we really needed to visit Atlanta/Georgia someday.

As for the show... Ultimately, it all boils down to MGM wishing to take a different direction w/ the Aria. I'm not sure Cirque would have pulled the plug on that show just yet otherwise.

They will obviously try and assign people to different shows, and offer them assistance finding work. By a strange twist of fate, it's actually a good thing that my wife underwent surgery last month and is off for the next few months, as it allows her to spend her time and energy making plans and preparing for the future. She has many options, and so much talent...

Another strange twist of fate is that the car accident last January was sort of a blessing in disguise, as the insurance money came in just around the right time - worst case scenario is not as bad as it could have been otherwise.

Yet another coincidence is that I finally got my Social Security number the morning of the day they announced they were pulling the plug on the show. So I've actually started applying for jobs, including a job at Cirque which was  advertised the very next morning.

I guess I'm a man of many funny coincidences, uh? :)
