Does Dim Pro Install in Platinum allow separate sample/drive location?

HI,
I want the Dim Pro Samples on an external drive. Does the install process in Sonar Platinum allow this?

Thanks,
Fred

You can change the location where Dimension Pro looks for the multisamples folder in the Windows registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cakewalk Music Software\dp
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Cakewalk Music Software\dp

So, you can move the multisamples folder anywhere you like and then adjust the "Multisamples Folder" value in the registry. Not sure, but you may also need to delete the file programs.lst in C:\ProgramData\Cakewalk\Dimension Pro\Programs to ensure Dimension Pro rebuilds the program list.

You cannot define a library path using Command Center, you have to download the installer from your user account and run that.

You can't tell the installer, Command Centre or earlier where to put the DimPro samples. You'll have to do it after the fact.

There is a more elegant solution than editing the registry. Use the Microsoft command line command "mklink".
It creates a link between the folder where the multisamples are stored and where the program looks for them by default.

This is true and it can be done prior to installation. For example, to relocate the dimpro multisample folder to s:\samples\dimpro\multisamples, run cmd.exe as administrator and issue the following commands
  1. mkdir "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Dimension Pro"
  2. mkdir "s:\samples\dimpro\multisamples"
  3. mklink /j "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Dimension Pro\Multisamples" "s:\samples\dimpro\multisamples"

When CCC installs DimPro, the multisample data will be written into "s:\samples\dimpro\multisamples"

The same operation may be done after installation by moving the Multisample folder to "s:\samples\dimpro\multisamples" then issuing the mklink command.

If you are going to do it this way then once you've moved the sample and done the registry edit, open DimPro, click in the program field (to select a sound to load) and press F5 to refresh the program list.

Instead of doing it as a registry entry it's more elegant to use the command mklink in Windows command line. It will create a link between the folder where DimPro expect to find the Multisamples and where you've actually put them. To DimPro it's completely transparent.

Isn't mklink just the dos version of "create shortcut here"?

Hmmm... I wonder if it would be safe to do that with the whole C:\Program Files folder? Just move the whole thing off of my supposedly OS-only SSD drive onto another drive. Anyone done something like that before?

It can't be as bad as the time I unmounted my C drive...

I expect it would be fine but have not tested it. Maybe work with one folder at a time in Program Files first and verify each program.

No, shortcuts are not the same as directory junctions.

THANK-YOU for posting this!
I just tried this out to move my Dimension content to a separate SSD (new Win 8.1 install), and it worked great!

One "quirk" when installing DSF add-on sound packs after performing the mklink command ~
The DSF installers would simultaneously install their samples in both the default Cakewalk/Dimension installation folder, AND in the folder specified by the mklink command.

I was able to delete the samples from the default folders and everything worked fine; just a bit odd that I wound up with double installs in separate locations....
