Does Home studio 6 run on Windows 7?

I'm considering buying a new PC, very powerful, to replace the XP machine I'm using now. I'm using Home Studio 6; will this run on Winodws 7 or will I need to upgrade my Sonar program?

probaby, but win7 wasn't out when SHS6 was released so cake won't say 100% it will work, but it probably will.

It should work, but it also depends upon whether you're getting the 64-bit version of Windows 7. If you are, you'll need 64-bit drivers for your audio/MIDI interface; depending upon how old it is, drivers may not be available.

Install SONAR as an Administrator in Windows 7, and if necessary, run it as an Administrator. This gets most of Windows 7's silly "permissions" out of the way.

If that's a "kudos" for me, I certainly appreciate it, Beagle--especially when it's coming from someone such as yourself, who obviously knows a thing or two (or three, or 40!) about DAWs and recording.

Well, thank you, Beagle. I like to help in any way I can. People here helped me while I was learning SONAR (yourself included), and I'm just returning the favor.

And Roddey, as far as SONAR in Windows 7, you can also run it in a "Windows XP SP2 Compatibility Mode" or, if you're getting Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate, you can run it in a virtual installation of Windows XP. (This basically runs Windows XP within Windows 7.)

Your best best would probably be Windows XP SP2 Compatibility Mode, with SONAR running as Administrator. Many people have gotten SONAR 6 to run in Windows 7 this way.

If you want to see which versions of SONAR are compatible with Windows 7 per Microsoft, check Microsoft's Windows 7 Compatibility List. Unfortunately, despite the efforts Cakewalk spent with Microsoft making sure SONAR 8 would work with Windows 7, it appears Microsoft didn't get the message. You'll see one version of SONAR 8 may or may not work in Windows 7, though the 64-bit version of SONAR 18 (yes, 18) is compatible. That'll be good to know...in 10 years.

Has Windows Hope Professional and Windows XP SP2 Compatibility Mode worked successfully for other versions of Sonar/Home Studio besides Home Studio 6? I'm using Home Studio 2004.

I have never heard of "Windows Hope Professional" so I don't know how to answer that.

versions prior to SHS6 should work fine on any XP system, but on Vista or Win7 they are not necessarily compatible even in XP Compatibility mode.  there have been several people on the forums who could not get versions prior to SHS6 to work on vista/win7 regardless of using them in compatibility mode or not.

the only way to know is to try it.  but upgrading might be necessary.

I can run home studio 6 in windows 7 except for recording. It starts to record and immediately stops. Any thoughts on what I did incorrectly?

Did you follow the suggestions in this thread? Do you get any error messages or other odd behavior? Studio 6 will have problems in the 64-bit version of Windows 7. Since you don't list your audio hardware, it's hard to tell if you just don't have the right drivers or if you're having a "permissions" problem with running older apps in Windows 7. Let us know your audio interface, which version of Windows you have and anything else that's pertinent (such as, is this a clean install of Windows 7, or did you upgrade from something?), and we'll be able to offer more help. Steve

.... just make sure that you download any updates to your soundcard/ interface and also keep up to date on Windows 7 updates. When I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7, I didn't install the updates in order and must have installed the W7 Service Pack before other important updates and it was a huge mess - I had to literally reinstall VISTA (the OS that I upgraded FROM) then do the upgrade TO Windows 7 AGAIN - and, you can be damn sure I made sure to get all the important updates the second time and it has been fine since.
