Does Sonar Artist support AAF/OMF import?

Hi,
Pardon my ignorance, but I'm a PTHD user and I'm trying to help an animator take some
ADR I did in Protools to something he can edit. There are a lot of individual clips and consolidating
the audio would not be my first choice.
I remember using AAF and/or OMF to go back and forth to older versions of Sonar. Does the
Artist version of Sonar support AAF/OMF?

Thank-you for your help/knowledge
Jeff

I've done OMF with SONAR, but I don't know whether the Artist version supports it or not.

Maybe someone who has Artist can go File > Open and see if in the "Files of Type" field, OMF is listed. Note that you don't find OMF in the Import dialog.

I also use OMF - but I don't have Artist.
I would be surprised if it didn't, doesn't sound like the kind of thing that would be restricted to higher priced versions.
But someone else must confirm this to be quite sure.

    Thanks Guys,
With OMF, does Sonar prefer embedded or external audio? With AAF, you don't have
a choice .. :-) It it does support embedded audio, that would be one file rather than having it
hunt down the external audio folder.

    Thanks  much.

I have only ever used the defaults, but here are the options Sonar offers:

    Audio Packaging:
    a) Embed audio within OMF
    or
    b) Reference audio externally.

    if b), you can
Split stereo tracks into dual mono
    Include archived tracks
Mix each groove clip as a separate clip

    Audio format:
    a) Write RIFF Wave
    or
    b) Write AIFC

I notice that if I export to external referenced files and I have the "Split stereo into dual mono" selected, it creates two files for each stereo track and appends -L and -R to the name.

Re-importing does not re-merge these tracks. They stay as two mono tracks, albeit with -L and -R appended to their names.

I believe you should be able to use either embedded or separate audio files... I typically use the separate files so that if there's a problem opening the OMF, I can rebuild from the audio tracks... Of course, it needs to be either whole tracks (not multiple clips/track) or Broadcast wav files to be tight/easy...

Using the split stereo to dual mono also makes it easier in case you need to work with a program that doesn't support stereo tracks in some manner...

Thanks ... if anyone would care to give it a whirl ...

Please remove the spaces out of the URL (below) .. this forum doesn't appear to like them and I had to trick it.

OK, so it imported on my Platinum and I can see and hear everything.

I unzipped everything and just opened the OMF file like it's an ordinary file. I didn't have to import in any special way.

It wanted to know tempo and sample rate in the beginning. I obviously guessed the wrong sample rate so for every file it said "converting sample rate".

I had to tell it to look in the subdirectory "Audio" once for the first file, then it found the remaining audio files on its own.

It created a directory "MixScenes", but it's empty. Is that a PT special thing?

There is also a file "msmFMID.pmr" which I don't think Sonar knows what to do with.

I am using Platinum, not Artist.

Anyone with Artist have a look to see if it has the option to save as OMF?

I notice the track names are not carried over, but the clip names are.

So a file may have the name
Tragic Magic Comp. Track 2 (32).wav
but the displayed clip name is
    GrayGaunt - (1) Night Castle Chamber_01-02

Thanks for checking into this. BTW MixScenes is a SONAR thing, it's where the Mix Recall files are stored.

Ah. no. There are no markers.
I am trying to find out what OMF actually supports. It seems to be quite a difficult question to answer.

The best I have found so far is this:
    http://www.mixonline.com/news/profiles/workstation-file-format-interchange-part-1/364921
Doesn't cover much practical stuff. Markers are not mentioned.

Ok .. I believe if I make a MIDI track in PT and export it, it should have the markers .. so that
should work .. at least I think it will.

Let me know if you want to try.
I just noticed the first track (Dialog Verb) is also missing.

    OK.
I think I'll put comprehensive ProTools import in the feature request forum.
(and export? But that's more difficult)

if a dev were to code a "comprehensive" OMF interface, it would enable/facilitate both import and export; export's no more difficult than import - at the interface level - but it depends what sonar needs to do to prep the data before export is possible (tl/dr: it's just a fancy mapping step)

    just a sec

That's OK .. the (dialog verb) first track is an Aux track in Protools .. so no worries there.

I seem to recall that Sonar did both import and export of OMF? I'm sure Sonar users would
appreciate a full import/export capability to/from Protools PTX format. PT used to only support
split-mono audio and the interleaved stereo tracks didn't come across cleanly. But, now they do.

Thanks very much for the testing .. much appreciated.

So far I have found out OMF is from Avid. That's a good start.
But it's old and in its official form only supports 16 bits, probably why I got that "converting sample rate" message.
Many implemetations bend the rules apparently, which leads to incompatibilities.

There is also an OMF2, but I am struggling to find solid information about what is supported by either 1 or 2.
i also read OMF is an API, not a format as such.
