Does Sonar create temp. files?
I am working on a PC with Windows 7 and using sonar x1 studio. I have just noticed that 300Gb of space have been taken up by User/appdata/tempfiles. They all seem to have a long number description for each file. Is this something that gets created by sonar after having created many cakewalk projects? I am tryng to find out if I can safely delete these files? Thanks for any help. Rick

Sonar doesn't create any temp files.
You can safely delete all those files.

Hi Mike, thanks so much for responding so quickly. I thought I would show a few examples of these temp files. 1. manifest.fingerprint,manifest.json 2.scoped_dir_4380_15037bueno.crx orcrv_install or cookies journaldata_0data_2 or appcach local storage 3.DFDDBBE248b62EE286.TMP 4.clipboard cache-7 5.etiles_vol9ox52f3ueqxf 6.FINF194.tmp and many many more. I have no idea where these files come from. Tell me if these make any sense to you. Thanks again, Rick

Just about every program on your machine uses C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Local\Temp as a repository for temporary files. You can safely delete the contents of that folder (some files may be in use by programs running on your machine though so cannot be deleted).

a lot of the files are part of installers for such things as windows updates and left over from any program you've installed. Its safe to remove them though some may not not be able to be deleted as they may be resident in memory or temporarily used by a program. Windows is smart enough to tell you if that's the case and wont let you. Its usually a small inconsequential number of files.

Do note that it's worth closing down all applications apart from Explorer while doing this - applications using temp files will often "lock" them and prevent them being deleted while the application is running.

A good general rule for applications that use temp files is not to write anything in the standard temp folders that could not be deleted with impunity. Of course an even better rule would be to include a cleanup routine that will delete those files when they are no longer needed. But even with such a cleanup routine, useless files could be left behind if the application crashed. And then of course there is programmer laziness, or a desire to make it look as if things are running faster than they are. So generally it is true that anything found in the temp folders can be deleted without a problem. Only rarely, like with everything else in Computerland, there will be a problem.

Ctrl + a works in Windows just like it does in Sonar to "select all"

If you are using Windows there should be a check box toward the top left under name that if checked will select all. I believe this was introduced in Vista. You can then just hit delete.

this will most likely make your computer run more efficiently too. Temp files are a necessary evil in order to keep your programs running smooth, especially surfing the web, but they ain't called temp files for nothing! with a purge of that much clutter , you may want to let the defragment program take a few passes at the disk once your get rid of them. You will free up a lot of room for files to condense themselves so they run smoother.

I was able to delete the temp files successfully. I had to delete in sections because a couple of times a file was not allowed to be deleted but once I got around that, everything would delete. So I got back my 316Gb of space. Sweet. Thank you all for your input and help with this. Rick Ranum

MB or GB? 316GB is a lot. Another "trick" you can do is to select that folder and copy (Ctrl-C), then go to the desktop, right click and "Paste Shortcut." This will give you an easily viewable drill-down into that folder. Then you can simply open that shortcut, Ctrl-A (select all), and hit Delete when you happen to think of it. Do not get too anal about deleting everything, since that folder accumulates temp files quickly; just delete what is not locked by another program and you will get most of it.
