No..I don't think I actually any music in my head until I play it. Sometimes I get an idea for the kind of thing I want, but I never really 'hear' it, and very often it ends up being something else entirely.

The first requirement to answer this is have a brain, personally I only have one cell which probably explains why what I hear in my fur ball of a head is rarely what it sounds like when it is recorded.

It's always an approximation of what I have in mind, but, more often than before as I learn, I do get closer to my goals. Still, it's funny how sometimes some things will work out okay in your head, and you really think that you hear that stuff as clear as if you were actually listening to it on a cd or something - but then you record it and it just doesn't work, not by a long shot. That's one of the weirdest things. Then there's the obvious compromises - maybe you hear John Bonham on drums or you imagine that awesome piano riff but you have to resort to MIDI sequencing and you don't have access to anyone who could really nail those parts.

It looks like about a 10/90 split with the middle ground being that it sounds like brain music eventually. I usually need to change my brain to match the music. Not surprising I guess.......I once imagined I could fly, but had a lot of trouble translating that to reality .

Sometimes. It's where it is originating from after all. Most of the time it is a close approximation. Every now and then I think..."where did that come from". I can't recall every writing something that didn't have some semblance of what I roughly started out to do. I find it a very intriguing process. There is definitely an excitement or kind of "writers high" that goes with the process for me.

I tend to compartmentalize so I may come up with a concept on an acoustic guitar. The concept may be as simple as a small melody line or a full song with chord changes etc and so on. When I start tracking it seldom stays the same in the sense of my original concept of it. The melody line might stay the same but the production, once it gets going, tends to veer off in wildly unanticipated directions. I like this. And I like the ability to track those conceptual changes relatively easily in a modern DAW. Regards,
Mike Win8(64), Sonar X3e(64) w/ RME Fireface UFX.

HA! When I first began seriously making music in 2011, I think everything was what I meant for it to be. As my skills progressed (and continue to) and I expanded my range of styles and techniques, I find that most of my more recent stuff ends up sounding MORE awesome, or WAY different than I heard it. Or sometimes I just wing it and start recording stuff without guidelines :3
