Does anybody here record using multiple computers at the same time ?
Hello Forum , I've been toying around with asking this question for a very long time … the short story is , I'm running two main computers over here , one is a Win 8 running X3 as my primary DAW …. the other is an I Mac running Logic pro and a number of other OXS based DAW's … both of these computers have their own usb sound cards … with the Win 8 and the I Mac I've done everything I can to have all my 3rd party plugs and synths available on both machines I find myself having to work as if I'm doing a collab with a bunch of different people ..all whom, that are using different DAW's … learning OMF , writing music doing stems across multiple platforms and little work arounds have exposed a few new tricks to this old dog , but man file management and keeping track of things is killing me …lol that in itself is becoming a major RUB…. I'm interested in hearing how some of you guys may have treated or used your DAW or an extra computer as a virtual rack-mount unit of external gear while running it back into SONAR …. you know …..synths , plugs , ….. bringing it out of one box into another so you can treat it as if you are doing a live analog take tweaked in real time ….. anybody doing this type of thing here ? if you are please chime in ….what will i need to do or learn to make this happen … thank you in advance , Kenny disclaimer ….in keeping w the End User Agreement …I'm not looking to run 2 instances of SONAR simultaneously ….

I don't do this myself, but I've considered it. Some of the posters on the Sounds Online forum (East West) might have some insight. If you come up with a good system, it would be interesting to hear about it.

Sort of. I regularly use a computer with my primary interface in conjunction with a Tascam 2488 (read second computer) and I digitally lock the two using SPIDF and let the Tascam run as a slave to the RME. This gives me 8 more channels. The lock is the key. Drift would be intolerable without the lock. I move all the files onto one computer for mixing (although you can use Cakewalk to automate the Tascam if you want... I did it once for yucks).
StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen. I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

Yes I'm also thinking about putting my old DAW to some sort of use. I 'm pretty sure it was done in the past when computers were easy to max out. They would double up to add more CPU processing power. I seem to remember them using a local network. I know how to set up network file sharing on XP but have never done it with W7 or now 8. Before dropbox I used to have all my home computers set on file sharing. As long as it was turned on I could access all the files. (This was safe because we were off line from the WWW) . Now drop box works and the other computers don't need to be turned on. My DAW's are off line so I was going to use this old router to patch them together. And then I was wondering about how stupid it would be to use the old DAW to run old 32 bit plug ins in a host or ?? Anyhow, hopefully someone has a better idea .

One of the things I've done in the past is run rtpmidi as an input into sonar (so i can record the midi for the project in one place) with an output into mac. The audio interface is output/input to sonar and recorded to the sonar project file. That way all the data is in one place even though multiple machines and dawd are involved. I've occasionally had audio sync issues i had to resolve by nudging, but nothing major.

I'm using Vienna Ensemble Pro mainly as a multi-machine host for Kontakt and Play libraries, but it can also be used to remote-host effect VSTs. All the midi and audio are sent and received over Ethernet cable, so if you have a gigabit hub, you already have all the connections in place. It takes a bit of work to wrap your head around at first, but after you get set-up, you'll wonder how you lived without it. Vienna has a downloadable demo on thier site. The full version requires a USB dongle for each server. Can't remember if the demo does.

200bpm VEP is the answer.
In case that's too cryptic, he's referring to Vienna Ensemble Pro, not Variant Effect Predictor or Visual Evoked Potential As to the OP, used to do that a looooong time ago with computer #2 basically serving as an instrument rack and running into an ADAT lightpipe connected to computer #1. The only way I combine computers these days is for networked rendering with Vegas, and most of the time I don't bother...I just go grab a snack while rendering, or log into this forum and see what's up for a few minutes.

I tend to agree with Craig, except I keep my rendering to a minimum, so I don't get too fat!
But with the power of the newer computers, unless I was doing some insanely large project, I can't see the need. I've migrated away from 32 bit stuff and I'm never running 110 instances of Omnisphere either.
But for those that love to tinker, plug in those old 80's rack pieces as external inserts, or love cables running all over, doing stuff like that can be total bliss. But it starts getting away from being musically creative and just being creative, for creative's sake. The listener could care squat, if you're desiring others than yourself to share music with.

I started working on doing what Craig is describing at one time when I was still using Gigastudio, but not with lightpipe, I think it was called FX Teleport that you linked the 2 computers for Gigastudio on 1 computer and sonar on the other. then Tascam ( ) decided to poop on the Gigastudio owners and I eventually went to Kontakt and haven't looked back since.

gswtiz, I used to run a Roland BR1180CD as the front end (sound shaper ) into my sound card ( 1010lt ) for years .. as a preamp it worked out very good for my guitar …having the COSM effects were a nice addition … I would also use it to phantom power a direct box w a cab emulator … never got around to exploring how to use SPDIF ….always wanted to …none of my current sound cards have it . I was able to sync it to SONAR VIA midi and use some of the built in drums , even got them in SONAR as midis…. just put it away a few months ago to clear some space on my desk … yeah I get where your coming from …it sure was an experiment …. thanks , Kenny

I do everyday. Multiple instances of EWQLSO. But I still run XP and Sonar 8.5.3. I use Fx teleport. It's the bees knees for running via another computer, vst's in Sonar. Unfortunately It is not (or was not) supported with win 7. I also run Muse Receptors which also runs as plugs in Sonar. Sergey over at RealGuitar sells midi over lan which would basically act like a external synth. So you would need sound cards on each external machine. I much prefer the way Fxteleport works. Totally seamless. instantiate the synth and it shows up in Sonar just like any other.

Hello Craig , it would't surprise me that you have been there , done that and moved on … I'm basing this current search / question on my needs at this point …. in an absolute best case scenario for me , I would have the money available to go out and buy some of the fully featured Goliath Synth / Plugin bundles such as Komplete and some of the various other compatible sound libraries I would be able to run on one machine comfortable . since I'm not able to do that today , I have to go outside of Windows and X3 to use the ESX 24 with some other things for the type of sounds I'm currently doing … thank you all, Kenny

Hey kenny, No i haven't used kiss box yet but I'm looking at it for a future project. The rtp setup was for an art project with a friend. We had several computers linked up and three control computers set up around a room running pure data and generating midi in real time based on what the machines webcams were seeing and sending the results to pcs and macs for adaptive and generative sound. All via wifi as well. Every once in a while I'll spook the girlfriend by streaming midi to her mac when I'm playing on the other side of the house. Good fun. :)

My setup has been the same for a long time. I run Sonar on a Win 7 machine with 16GB of RAM and 2 hard drives. All of the samples, MIDI and WAV files are on the 2nd drive, Sonar, the OS, plugins and Sound Forge and CD Architect are on the 1st drive. My second machine is dedicated to one purpose: Running the VSL complete library, that's the only thing it's used for. This machine also runs Win7 and has 24GB of RAM. I can load well over 250,000 samples at once. The two machines are connected via MIDI (input to VSL), ADAT (digital output to the Yamaha DM2000 mixing board), and Ethernet (for sharing files). That's my setup, here is the latest symphonic movement completed with this setup: www.jerrygerber.com/symphony9.htm Best, Jerry

I'm using two computers but one is for my monitor controller- which is a Focusrite Saffire 40. ...I had it laying around and wanted to put it to use. Before I was using an RME MutliFaceII but the volume control was software driven and I wanted a real knob to turn! It's working out nicely! I decided to NOT put the Focusrite on my main machine because I did it once and it blew out the drivers for my main interface which is a VS700. I'm using the ADAT output of the VS to the ADAT input on the Focusrite. The only issue is, for some reason, I can't hear any of the live stuff I'm cutting. ...haven't figured that out yet. My workaround is to plug a couple of analog cables from the output of the VS to the input of the Saffire and use the Focusrite mixer to hear.

Hi, I use a similar setup to Sacalait. Because a lot of the people I work with use PT, I have a dedicated workstation that has a Saffire Pro 40 w/PT. I use the ADAT from it to send or receive from the PT Rig to my Sonar Rig. It is not so much Using one Rig to control the other's plugs, but more to send the audio to a Specified channel in the other. For example.. There are some effects or instruments that I have in PT or Sonar that I want to use.. Instead of putting up two instances of the same... I just send it and record it via ADAT and make track notes about what it is for the project. A lot of times for collaboration purposes I also can send my Sonar Stems or tracks via ADAT to PT for ease of use for my associates that use PT. Again making track notes about the tracks specifics. This may be simplistic to what you are wanting but for me .. It does work IHTH..

Hello pianodano, I looked up what you have mentioned , the FX teleport look good …I'm on Win 8 ..oh well…. thanks … Sir Les Wow, Just what I am trying to ,or going to do....here sort of. Midi control, master /sync/slave the other...and a mixer, and wires to ins and outs ...busses, and such help also, is the way I think I know will work today.?..As it sort of did in past era of ages...midi is powerful when you know how to use it.... it has been around for as long as the computer has....so I guess it works now?....lol Some info... https://www.gearslutz.com/board/music-computers/963610-cheap-way-sync-2-computers-together.html http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/oct07/articles/protools_1007.htm Best wishes! .
Hello Sir Les, sure , what the OP is asking in the link you provided is pretty much along the lines of what I'm asking about here… my situation in a nut shell is I want to use SONAR and Logic together …that's about the main difference… Yeah , it looks like I'm gonna have to go old school midi by figuring out a routing system and leaving my home set up like that … thanks , jsg
kennywtelejazz Hello Forum , I've been toying around with asking this question for a very long time … the short story is , I'm running two main computers over here , one is a Win 8 running X3 as my primary DAW …. the other is an I Mac running Logic pro and a number of other OXS based DAW's … both of these computers have their own usb sound cards … with the Win 8 and the I Mac I've done everything I can to have all my 3rd party plugs and synths available on both machines I find myself having to work as if I'm doing a collab with a bunch of different people ..all whom, that are using different DAW's … learning OMF , writing music doing stems across multiple platforms and little work arounds have exposed a few new tricks to this old dog , but man file management and keeping track of things is killing me …lol that in itself is becoming a major RUB….
Hello Jerry Yes , I'm very happy you chimed in my current computer set up = a placeholder set up … it is good enough for me to get a taste of what could be , and a good place for me to learn . thank you for posting your specs … I find it encouraging to know that if I was ever able to make the jump from the kiddie section of the pool by getting the right compatible hardware and software that someday I may be able to approach the music i do with the complexity and sonic textures you have so amply put forth in your music …your music sounds real . the hardware end of things may do able if I can generate more income … the talent end of things , Oh well …in my case it may beyond human help … , but hey , when has that ever stopped anybody lol… I have listened to some of your music , including the link you provided… your music is absolutely fantastic … thank you , Kenny

swamptooth Hey kenny, No i haven't used kiss box yet but I'm looking at it for a future project. Good fun. :)
hey swamptooth, that is some wild stuff you were doing and it sure sounds like fun … thanks , LunaTech Hi, I use a similar setup to Sacalait.
Hello LunaTech, thanks for sharing that …your approach sounds solid and workable … What I was looking to do was somewhat along the lines of what you are talking about … I wanted to be able to use instruments and effects from both Logic and X3 interchangeably in projects in real time w out having to render in one app and then send it over to the other DAW VIA an external HD or thumb drive …. it only took me about 10 hours of experementing to work it out and the cool thing is my solution was very simple to implement using my current hardware …. now I'm stoked …. thanks , Kenny

My Giga Studio 3 rig (4 PCs) is still functional for older projects still not finished, even though I've begun to move everything into one PC with Kontakt 5 and Komplete 9 Ultimate. I'm still not convinced X3 can compete at 1.5ms with my old rig. Time will tell.
The GS3 setup is 1 PC (XP SP-2) running Sonar 4.0.2 as the main work station and 3 satellite (farm animals XP SP-2) that run Giga Studio 3 so I can split up my orchestra sections and have 64 x 3 midi tracks loaded with samples and ready to go. I use MidiOverLan and Forte Ensemble to talk to the 3 hosts.
Forte runs 2 instances East West Gold Orchestra, mainly just for orchestral percussion. I no longer use EW Gold for anything other than percussion.
GS3 libs. in use are Kirk Hunter Emerald, Advanced Orchestra, Some basic Vienna Sam TrueStrike, EW Rare, Vienna Percussion Pro, Ethno World 3 Complete, and a bunch of other stuff.
Rendering the final is light pipe back into the workstation. All Echo Audio cards: 3 Layla 24, 1 Layla 3G, 3 Gina 24, 1 Gina 3G.
The big perk with this setup is absolutely consistent and flawless 1.5ms latency even with projects of 100 or more midi tracks and never a need to freeze anything.

Hello Steve , It sounds like you have had a very advanced set up for a long time . that is awesome … You also have some real nice Orchestral and sound sets going there ….all the stuff I wish I had …. 1.5ms latency with 100 or more midi tracks and never needing to freeze anything…that is impressive … thanks for sharing that ….. Well, I used to use FX MAX on two networked computers and used one computer for VST and VSTi's only to generate more horse power (RAM).... but have abandoned this since I have gone 100% X64 (No Longer an Issue). I think CAKE is using some of the code from FX MAX in that I see the module running when I used to use any 32 bit VSTi's. I also used to send MIDI data to two computers at the same time... one of them to monitor the playback of the VSTi in real time while at the same time recording the MIDI data on the DAW machine. That too has now been abandoned with the usage of the near zero latency of APOLLO (for effects anyway).

Just bought a second computer because a problem with my main i7. I am wondering what brand and kind of touch screen monitor I should add to take advantage of that feature plus I now want to figure out how to best proceed in using 2 computers. I wonder if I can tap into the power of my second computer by networking it so I can use it like a uad card.
