Does anyone have a Gibson SJ acoustic?

I've been infatuated with small body guitars for a couple of years... but the SJ series has always seemed mysteriously attractive.

The few I have played seemed to have real thin necks... and I like a medium or fat neck. Plus I've never played one that hadn't been sitting on the rack for too long. In other words, I've never played one that had some playing time on it.

Does anyone have one?

What do you think of the overall feel? Do you have any insights?

Thanks.

best regards,
mike

My brother has a J-200 that I play from time to time. Medium neck profile as most are. The big body gives it a powerful thick tone and it is really stable. This model uses a laminated neck structure that keeps it real straight. Whenever you need it, it's ready to go.

I find most Gibson acoustics to be sort of unique. You never really know what it will be like until you get one in your hands. I wouldn't recommend buying one sight unseen. But that's the way I feel about most guitars.

    hey Mike:

I've got an SJ Deluxe (purchased around 1970 or there abouts)

A fabulous sound (for a small body); yes the neck is quite thin but very playable.

I dropped it about twenty years ago (the neck had a small crack about half way through); it was nicely repaired by one of the best luthiers in Los Angeles.

Maybe it's just me but it's never quite sounded the same.

I saw one (looked nice) on EBay a few years back for $800; ( I know very little about what old guitars are worth but this seemed like a very good price)

If you are looking to buy one:

check the pick guard (where it meets the sound hole) closely: common place to find tiny cracks in the wood
