Does anyone have one yet?

Has anyone bought one yet? Who's gonna be first?

Has anyone seen one? I want to put my hands on one in a local music store before purchasing... I still can't do that with the V-synth from Roland and it was last year's NAMM prize!

Is the V-Studio going to go on tour?

Where are you located? You can see the list of VS-700 dealers here. Within the next few weeks we will be announcing tour dates and locations.

    YEP. just got one.
    Totally awesome...
    Fits like a glove.
I've owned the Tascam FW-1884, Mixed Logic 24, and I'll tell ya right now, It can't be beat. It's AWESOME.

The Mic Pre's are really quiet.
    The Software interface is Great.
Automation works like a charm. Touch sensitive fadders.

Street price $3600.00 and I haven't sent in my $200 rebate yet.

Don't do like me though. I loaded the drivers for the VS-700 and was so excited I forgot to load the software and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't work. Hee Hee
    You gotta load both.

    Great job CAKE.
    I'm totally pleased.

That's fabulous GuyPicks! Thank you. I def agree with Zo. We'd love to see some pics of the VS700 system in your studio. I'd eventually like to see a thread here dedicated to just that, with reviews etc. Very cool.

    Hey GuyPicks,

I am just curious, where did you get it from ? I see you are in Akron, OH, I've lived there for 2 years some time back and the only reasonable music store that comes to my mind is Lentine's. Is this where you got it ? Did you have to bargain to get $3600 or was it just offered to you at this price.

I am asking because I am seriously considering getting this thing and I like the sound of $3600 better than $4200 !

Anyway, congrats on your purchase and hopefully you will keep us posted on your impressions.

Oh, and hello to all the fellow Sonar users, I guess this is my first post on the Forums !

This is just a temporary setup.
I'm having a custom console made.
As soon as I get the studio all setup I'll post more pics.
I had to really SWEET talk to get this price. Can't tell you where but I almost gave it away.
$3600 is a lot of money for me but I sold a lot of equipment and had a piggy bank set aside every since I heard they were coming out with this board.
I just knew it would be a hit for me.
I've used it all week now without any problems whatsoever.

Here's some shots of my studio.

I see your two monitors and I have a question. Isn't you mix position traingulation a little off?

Will you be correcting that with the new desk/surface?

I had the Tascam FW-1884 for about 2 1/2 years and it had the pre-amp modification in it. Great board but doesn't hold a candle to the VS-700 as far as function with the Sonar software. You're aware of the Tascam holdbacks.
I couldn't say the VS sounds better without a side by side comparison.
I do know the tascam projects I have, sound great on the VS if that's worth anything.
That being said and being a former FW-1884 user, get out there and get this thang. V-Studio 700 that is.

I hope it stays working like it is now for years to come. Fingers crossed.

Yes and yes. The table is also way too low as you can see in the pic but that's all I had.
In fact the whole setup will be moved to the other side of that room.
    Right now it's just temporary.
I have a very good friend that's building me a custom console.
We've already laid out the plans. All I have to do is buy the materials.

I have one too...I'm reviewing the V-700 for Keyboard magazine. I am definitely buying one, I figure with the amount of time it saves me, it will pay for itself in six months to a year.

The controller is great. Something unexpected: How much better ACT is when brought out to a dedicated set of controls. The approach I'm taking with it is to basically forget about the existing assignments, and use "learn" to learn controls I need to use at that time. For example, if I'm tweaking a filter/envelope combination, I just have it learn those until I need them to learn something else.

The other surprises are the interface and Fantom. The interface mic pres sound really good, or perhaps more properly, don't have a sound which to me, means it sounds good. I have a "color" preamps I can patch in; what I want in an interface is a straight-wire-with-gain. I also like that you can digitally control the gain, so I basically just leave everything plugged in, ready to go, and with levels adjusted.

The Fantom sounds remarkably good. You can use up the 128 voices pretty fast with complex patches, because one note can play up to eight voices; but hardware can't have unlimited voices. I've already created a "new" template with six Fantom instruments instantiated - great for getting ideas down. Probably the best thing about the Fantom is you can use it as a scratchpad but if a track is a "keeper," you don't need to change to a "better" sound. And as a guitar player, it's great because I can have a lot of instrument tracks going on without loading down the CPU. This lets me keep the latency way down to get the best real-time feel for guitar. There is a limitation in that you have to do any Fantom bounces in real time, but that's not a deal-breaker.

I could go on but I need to get back to the review.

Damn. That looks sexy in a studio space.

Cakewalk should send me one to write a review for the IDMforums.

Come on! Over 20,000 members almost all computer-based musicians, and I moderate there. So, I'm well-respected among the members. Pwease?

    Craig,

interesting about ACT. I try to do some of the same with my little novation keyboard, but of course it doesn't give visual feedback. How do the strips work for that - enough info?

Glad the preamps sound good - or clean anyway. How bout conversion. I think it was Seth at the Sonar 8 presentation said he prefered them over his RME. Where do you think they stand?

Hope to get my mitts on one soon.

    hello everyone..please bear with me..
When news broke that roland/cakewalk are gonna come up with some hardware, I actually thought it would be independant/standalone hardware with cakewalk "poured into" it. I remember reading once that manufacturers actually knew the cost of making a mixer and a multitrack recorder would be roughly the same the same. Just inagine, a high end roland multi GB hard disk recorder incorporating very good preamps and convertors with VGA out that translates as cakewalk Sonar (X) on the monitor screen. No need to look elsewhere for convertors(at last for those who could be pleased quite easily),audiocards or whatever prepherals associated with making audio tracks...One stop for all hardware and software queries..Hopefully yes hopefully one day.....

The "feedback" is seven characters, so sometimes the labels are obvious and sometimes, cryptic. For example, with a compressor, "Attack" is not a problem to understand. But with Pentagon, one row just says "Filter Filter Filter Filter." These are actually cutoff and resonance for the two parallel filters. Once you move the controls, it becomes pretty clear what's what. But I prefer to just use the Learn function on an ad hoc basis, and as a result, the feedback isn't quite as important to me.

At the risk of being heretical, converter technology these days has gotten to a point where there are far more similarities than differences. Once you start hitting 24-bit/192kHz conversion, unless you're going to go for some ultra-high-end model, anything mere mortals can buy is fairly equivalent. I don't have an RME for a side-by-side comparison, although I've always thought they had excellent quality when I've had loaners for doing reviews. Still, I surmise that if you A/Bed them with the converters in the V-700, few people could tell the difference consistently.

Oh, I should also add the LCD parameter display is two-line - there's not just the label at the top, but the lower line shows the parameter value (e.g., 26%).

    Craig,

thanks for the info. It doesn't seem that hard to keep track of, but I hate all that cryptic management.

As far as the convertor technology, I have to agree with you. A few years ago it seemed to have plateaued and even bargin stuff sounds good as long as it isn't pushed too hard (applies to preamps, too). Still, I can tell the diff between the SSL-Apogee at the studio and Presonus here at home. I don't know if it is more the SSL or the Apogee. Still, for commercial purposes people seem to rank budget units (like Presonus, M-Audio, etc) and start splitting to the upper end at RME prices. I know if I walk into a studio I start looking at equipment to see how serious they are, after I look at the walls to see if they have any gold records (how quaint), grammies and/or pics of famous clients. So it was more of a theoretical and client question.

    THanks for the time.
