Does anyone know how to record streaming audio?

Does anyone know how to record streaming audio?  There was this great interview with an inspirational speaker I heard on a blog, but the interview is just in streaming audio and I would like to find a way to capture the interview before they end up taking it down.

You can download freeware that will do that.  One freebie I've used is called Free Sound Recorder. (what else) If you can hear it on your PC, it will record it in a number of formats. MP3, wav. etc. There's others available as well. Just Google. You'll find some.

If your soundcard has the ability to "Record What You Hear" (sometimes called Stereo Mix), you can use that.

I was thinking most computers could do that with their sound card... the record what you hear thing... but I never have done it, so I wasn't too sure.

I've been using download helper which is an add on for Firefox... it seems to be working well.

A lot of soundcards - internal and external -  don't have it. If you do have it then yep, you just press record and it records what it hears.

I had some sort of program that supposedly could do that... but I never used it...... and it involved setting on the soundcard..... there was something that I wanted to record... but by the time I figured it out, I simply stuck a mic in front of the speaker and recorded it that way....(old school)

+1 on download helper. When you go to the site that's playing the audio, you can use download helper to download the audio file.

But if you want to record it, many soundcards have that ability, especially built-in ones. This is one case where you want to record "what-u-hear" --that's what it's called sometimes.

What soundcard(s) do you have, including any built in to your pc?

(edit: I see lots of people already mentioned the what-u-hear solution. I'm late to the party...)

I tried to find download helper.  There are a bunch of Firefox extensions that match that name but I didn't see one that looked appropriate.
Can someone provide the exact name and maybe the author's name to help nail down the correct extension?

I have used Real Player to download streams/video and or audio... when you install and then search the web through real player it pops up a download bubble above the source you are watching/listening to... It will download this in a format for real player to use, however then I can import it to Switch (my audio file converter software) and then export as an MP3 to play on a normal player... you could even convert to .wav and burn a disc from there....

    I use "MP3 My MP3" for this.  It's free/donationware.

I've never got the reason why there are all kinds of utilities to do this, although I'm sure there must be reasons otherwise there wouldn't be so many utilities available.

Even with a built in sound chip normally you can record what comes out of the computer speaker at the very least using Windows supplied basic sound recorder.

Up from that if you want better editing facilities post recording then something like Audacity (freeware) will do the job really well.

Often an audio interface will allow you to re-route Windows audio elsewhere too.

For example I use an E-Mu card and can route Windows audio straight into Sonar via a send in the cards Patchmix software if required.

Seeing as it's spoken word and superb audio quality might not be an issue , I'd recommend recording directly to MP3 format, A wav file of a longish interview will be huge and take a long time to render and throw around etc.

Why not record it into Cakewalk? (I assume that you have a soundcard and Cakewalk).

I have 't idea about it but I get its lowest version. It is same way to use this application. Just visit its settings options, from there you can find so many types of option to edit and modyfy, after editing you must restart your application, Sure it works good.

Well, I've tried both Free Sound Recorder and MP3 My MP3 and neither one of them worked for me (just got blank audio during playback after recording).  And I don't have Firefox, so I can't try the Download Helper.

I've got an M-Audio Fast Track Pro sound card.

Free Sound Recorder should work fine.

Select your input/output format (wav, mp3, etc)
Select a folder it will put the recorded file in
Hit record - It will then ask you to name the file
It will start recording automatically after that.
(You can set your record level anytime prior to the above)

I've used it a number of times. It always works. No hiccips. (I use it on a Win XP machine if that matters)

Does "Free Sound Recorder" claim to work even if your soundcard does not have the "record what you hear" option?

I was hoping that someone who uses or recommended Free Sound Recorder would comment on its ability to record even without the "record what you hear" feature.

If the product needs that feature, I'm sure it might try to record and the result would be silence.

I believe that the M-Audio products do not have the record what you hear feature.

I'm not sure, but I'm starting to think it doesn't.  Ugh, something that should be simple can end up being so difficult.

HeatherB,  You should be able to check for the record what you hear feature (sometimes called Stereo Mix).
If you have the speaker icon (windows mixer) in the system tray you can double click it to open the playback volume controls.  Click "options" in the menu bar and then click Properties.  There should be a way to select "Recording" but how it looks depends on the sound card you are using.  It might be a radio button labeled Recording.  Or there might be a pull-down list for selecting the soundcard's input side.  Sometimes you can't select the Recording button until after you select the soundcard's input side.

Then there will be a list of recording volume controls that you can select.  If What U Hear  or  Stereo Mix is listed make sure it is selected with a checkmark.  Then click OK to see the volume and mute settings for each recording control.  Make sure the ones of interest are not muted and that the volume slider is up.

Let us know how that goes.

Just tried it on XP with  onboard Realtek AC97 card.  Works fine with no "What you hear".  You may have to set your audio device in:

Yeah, i use Audacity (it's free) and my onboard Realtek card  to record streaming audio with no problems.  Works great.  You might want to try it.  You can always revert to your high end audio after the job is done anyway.

I only use it on my internet pc. It's a basic pc with the default built-in Realtec sound chip on the mobo. Didn't configure anything, it justs worked as advertised straight away.

Don't have it installed on my daw to test with a "real" audio interface as my daw is not connected to the net.
