Does anyone know of a logging program that will tell me what program or service is causing

audio dropouts.  When playing something like solitaire, I notice a big slow down of which I'm sure is causing my sudio dropouts, or least some of them but since I've upgraded to Win7 64 bit I'm just not sure what is causing the CPU slowdowns.  Anyone know of a program that logs "attacks" on my CPU??

Thanks
Dan

Look in your device manager and see whats using the most resources

You can look at the Windows Task Manager and see what apps are using the CPU (sort by % or minutes used).

You can go to Administrative tools and look at the Event Viewer and see if any errors have been logged.

I have tracked down a memory leak in Win 7 with this, sometimes my cpu will spike to almost 100% due to a svchost process, I finally got tired of trying to figure it out and just kill the process now...

svchost (service host) is a system process that typically contains several other services - so just killing it might cause very unexpected results.

If you right-click and choose "Go To Service(s)" it will show you what services are included. Unfortunately the services list doesn't include performance data such as CPU or memory consuption. But if you can see the service description then you can determine what it's doing and try to figure out how to cleanly stop it.

For example - yesterday I was running slow due to a svchost process. when I looked at the services I noticed it included MsMpSvc - which is the Microsoft Antimalware Service. And it turned out it was currently scanning my computer. It was almost completed so I didn't cancel it but I could have if I needed to.

You can look it up (I forgot the steps), but you can change the cumulative combining of multiple services into an svchost, so that each service is loaded separately.  Then you can evaluate and control each one individually.

Latency and running short on memory is one big giant pain - good luck with it.  I was able to fix my problems by simply getting a divorce and investing previously allocated to beyond our means shopping dollars into getting a killer pc running 16GB of memory and a solid-state hard drive and all of that sort of thing.  Not only did that fix my dropouts and pops from latency, it also completely eliminated a nagging noise in whichever ear my now ex-wife was talking to.  And I sleep much better too.  :)

In control panel open up Administrative Tools. There you should find Reliability and Performance monitor. There you can check your system and also view any crashes with Event Viewer.

This is a very effective tool used to great effect in audio .. run the tool for 30 mins and see what pops up.. While there is a list of likely candidates i can give you, (wifi, av, selective suspend, etc etc..) it is all conjecture.. this program will give you the hard data for your system

Can someone tell me how/where Device Manager and/or DPClatency can tell what the problem is?
    Thanks very much,

Randy, its a game of inferences...

latency reported is typically a short term average... (very short term).. and odd audio drop outs are typically caused by infrequently running processes... so if you run say, latencymon for 10-30 mins and you get spikes of bad latency and it reports a particular process as being the culprit (which it will), you infer from this that that process can be the cause of an audio dropout..

Thanks, I'll have to check out Latencymon next time I have an issue.... I was just saying I don't think this info is in device manager or dpclatency...but I would like to know if I'm wrong.

The DPC Latency Checker page has pretty useful instructions and a number of hints, but it's up to you to try stopping services one at a time to determine the culprit. Start with wireless networking.
