Does anyone use the 64 bit plugs that came with Producer?
I find myself flipping back and forth, between wanting new production plug-ins and realizing that I don't use what I already have. The 64 bit plugs like the LP64, PX64, TS64 etc, seem pretty good, but not exceptional. I like to use software with an upgrade path and I'm not convinced these plugs will ever be updated. Does anyone use these plugs?

I don't use those plugins and I have hardly even tried them. I have a suite of plugins I am very happy with, but I should certainly give the plugins you mention a go. There are so many delicious plugins out there that I am just waiting to purchase!

I use PX64 consistently. It works well for sweetening voice overs. i use them less since I got expanded but i still find them very useful.

if properly used to their potential, those plug ins are some of the best one can use. i know others will differ, but even the sonitus suite has one of the best delays ive ever used. the percussion strip works on vocals, bass, drumms. the vocal strip, ive used that suddle on even guitar before to bring out the highs. those plug ins arent as bad as one would think for just a throw in as part of producer.

Those included in SONAR are most likely made by the very same companies the products of which you purchase. They are more than worth trying.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

But in my case, there is no defined 'tracking' vs. 'mixing' stage. Or 'mastering' for that matter. I flip back and forth between them all. That's just how it works 'round here. And that's why I tend to avoid high-latency plugins.

Its funny that we often disregard the things we pay the least for. The plugins that come with X1 Producer are as a group can often compare very favorably with any others of the same type. Some are unique the VX Vocal strip is just one example. It comes with high quality multiple processors and can do much for a vocal tracks. If a user disregards the the plugins that come with X1 in favor of third party plugins simply because the third plugins cost them something is only hurting themselves. Its lot like the Prochannel at first some thought it was just a nice addition with little practical use. Many avoided using it. We see now that it is as good as some of the most expensive add-on plugins around. What I suggest is use those plugins and get to know them. You will find that they stand up to many of the ones costing you real money. I have way too many plugins now. I do have a few I go to for certain things yet I never look down my nose at what CW has provided. One thing I have learned is if it doesn't sound good it may be operator error not the software or a particular plugin. Than we need to look at what CW gives us compared to what other developers give us in their DAWs. To me CW is way ahead of any other DAW is this area. Think about this for a moment. CW was/is a pioneer in full 64 bit computing and also in providing 64 bit internal processing in their plugins. What is old now in X1's plugins is still ahead in others in the internal processing. I am not saying all CW plugins are full 64 bits internal processing but all the newer ones are. But even the old ones still work and sound great. I should add this. There is a free plugins from CW that is a remarkable plugin. Its the FX3 Sound Stage. Its a 32 bit DX plugin with an old GUI. I still use it though by using a wrapper and letting Bitbridge load it. No other plugin is like it. None are as tweakable or has its sound. By ignoring a plugin that sold for more the $89 when it came out simply because its an old one is loosing out on a really great bargain. Its worth wrapping it so it will run in a 64 bit DAW. You can DL from the CW store free and than get a DX to VST wrapper and learn to use it.

Can't speak for everyone, but i think I sometimes get caught up in the next latest, greatest thing and forget that what i already had was pretty good. Redundancy of plugins that are similar can lead to that. Cakewalk (and to be fair, every company that ships new versions) will hype a plugin as being so great and then release plugins for similar purpose in the next release. I know their intent is not to tell us the older tool is now obsolete, but in some ways the message is implied that the new one is better. In my mind I know it is often a matter of different rather than better, but it's hard to wear the logic hat 24/7. Recently, I found myself trying to get use to a pro channel workflow and that caused me to spend so much time with those effects and processes that I simply got out of the habit of using some very good effects. It took me opening up an old project for a client to remind myself of how good the plugins I was already using were. I'm hoping they improve upon some of the plugins that had potential but kind of fell flat in practical use. LP64 is a good example. It sounds fine, but the general consensus seems to be that the real time adjustment glitch is unacceptable.

If a user disregards the the plugins that come with X1 in favor of third party plugins simply because the third plugins cost them something is only hurting themselves. John makes an excellent point. Furthermore, we're well into the spectrum of diminishing returns. Even those of us with great ears still play tracks over and over again, comparing one against the other, to detect the slightest differences. We're talking about subtle colorings that the average listener will NEVER be able to hear. Beyond the intended functionality of the plug-in, whether it's a compressor, EQ, limiter, or whatever--assuming they're on the same level of production (which all the X1 plugs certainly are)--the differences are purely subjective. It often boils down to the user-interface, and whether or not we feel "inspired" by working with it. I've certainly shelled out my share of clams on those "next best things." But one thing I've learned over the years, is you can't fix a crappy mix with good plug-ins. Get it right from the mic onto the hard drive, and the most you'll ever need is a subtle tweak here and there. There are always exceptions, naturally, but nine times out of ten the particular compressor you use isn't going to make a lick of difference, assuming it's good quality to begin with and you know what to do with it. Finally, I know this doesn't apply to most of the posters here, but I find it really amusing when somebody invests oodles of cash in all this fantastic software, then records with a Sound Blaster and a dented SM-58, and wonders why they can't get a good mix. Hello?? Am I right?? :)

I routinely use all the 64-bit plug-ins that come with X1. My simple philosophy - if it is bundled then its not free - just that I have already paid for it and I therefore intend to get my money's worth. Often times, it's kind of like buying bottled water in the grocery - grocery brand and Evian probably both come from same source (in this case quite likely the tap!!). But seriously I have been able to do good things to my kick and snare track with PX64!! Give them a try - nothing to lose!
GFEEL Sonar X1 Producer, Vista 64-bit, AMD 64-bit quad core (1.83 GHz, 4GB RAM, 500 GB HD), Gateway 22" LCD, Project Mix I/O, Korg Triton & M50, Akai XR20 Drum Machine, Roland SP-404 Sampler, M-Audio BX-8a Monitors, & LOTS OF GOOD VIBES!!!

I'm enjoying the feedback. I didn't get a producer grade version of Sonar until 8.3 and so I don't know the history of their development. I've been looking at these plugs and they seemed very good. Hopefully Cakewalk will not drop the ball and let them die out. If they're 80% as good as the most expensive stuff on the market I think they should polish the apple a bit. I like continuous improvement much more than radical change in most cases. Everyone has some common sense buried inside. I really clicked with Heather's comments about simply getting the sound right, up-front. That's the key to my photography. Imagine the shot, find the best place for it to happen and wait until it shows up. I never use photoshop to improve pictures. I'd rather take 200 pictures and pull out 2 or 3 that make the grade. A lesson I should take to the audio world. Thanks for taking the time to share. Rock on!

I too co-sign with Heather's comments. My biggest source of frustration in my line of work is when i receive raw assets that require tons of wasted time to be brought UP to the level of simply being crappy. The myth that one can simply "fix it in post" prevails among many, even so-called professionals.

I agree with John et al about those plug-ins that come "for free" with Sonar. When I was wrapping up mixing on my last album I had a friend, who is great at mixing and works in studio in L.A., lend me his ear and some final mixing tips. He had the whole suite of plugins from the most expensive third party plugs to those included within Sonar. It was interesting to watch him switch back and forth between different brands, often falling back to the very same Sonitus plugins that I had used as the plugs of choice. Not always, but enough to validate my feeling that what you already have is more than capable of doing the job.

I have to agree with the consensus. I have found myself getting rid of more and more plug-ins and relying upon the ones in SONAR. I recognized my path down the 'gotta have the latest' but I really like the Sonitus plugs and always have. The other part of it was that as I upgraded machines I found it a pain in the arse to track down and reinstall some plugs I used for a specific song. I converted them all back to SONAR plug-ins and didn't miss a thing. I think the included plug-ins are solid and more than capable.

dubdisciple, What is PX64 and how did you use it on voice-overs? I just finished a track that is actually a narration over a music track and may be able to get some ideas from you. In answer to the other points, I use the Vocal Strip doubler subtly sometimes to lift a chorus, but it sounds really phony if it gets too prominent.

The Pro Channel modules in my opinion are not a serious replacement for any VST. It's nice to have there to slap on a track or bus quickly to get a rough mix, but not for finishing touches. They are what they are, and that is a simplified, stripped down version of a VST. So far, personally, the only thing I've found that is actually useful on a regular basis is the Limiter in the PC2A Comp/Limiter. I tried the comp side of it but Sonitus sounds much better imo.
You couldn't be more wrong. PC is as good as it gets. I don't believe you have any idea how to use them. Then maybe everything crashes on you before you get a chance to know them. The Sonitus plugs are great but so are the PC modules. They are what they are, and that is a simplified, stripped down version of a VST This part is a little baffling. In what way are they"stripped down" VSTs? Did you see the thread where Freddie H posted pictures of the hardware these modules are modeled from? They have the same controls. In some case more than other VST versions of the same gear. If you mean they are not like other VSTs in that they use the PC instead of the FX bin well isn't that the point of them? Isn't that in part a reason to get X1 Producer? Sorry Vintagevibe I added this because it struck me after I had posted. So you may want to amend your post.

In answer to the other points, I use the Vocal Strip doubler subtly sometimes to lift a chorus, but it sounds really phony if it gets too prominent. konradh, i actually did a bit of a typo/ brainfart. i meant to type VX-64 but was thinking of a comment ( i believe it was Craig Anderton) about using PX64 on Voiceovers. It is technically designed for percussion but can be used on voices to rein in plosives. I work on mostly television commercials. The sound i get to work with is sometimes crap or done by VO artists with usb mics in their bedrooms. I typically run it through pro channel using Gate (gotta suppress that ac unit running in the background), saturation, EQ and the PC2A. I then throw the VX64 on it if it is still sounding too thin. I agree, the doubler sounds awful if you put more than a touch on it. Sometimes phony is good in my line of work, though. Glad i made that typo because I had forgotten to try the PX64 on vocals. I have a voiceover right now where the guy is spitting plosives every other word and it may help. I'll let you know how it goes and can even share results if i find it useful

Agreed. I have UAD, Waves IK etc... PC is absolutely in the same league. in the same league as waves?..wooe there. i love the pc and all the cakewalk plug ins,but there is no way you can throw it in the same catagory as something like the ssl. im just not seeing it.(hearing it) dont get me wrong,i love the pc,im a huge fan.
