Now wait a minute dere...ya doirty baystid...LOL! (j/k) Actually Craig, it's the North Jersey people that ruin it for all of us. Hahahaha! I got a bit of an accent but for the most part, I think the only word we in south J really destroy is the word "water". No one in south j says it like that. We all say "wooder". If you say "Water" people automatically know you ain't from around here. Hahaha! We're actually closer to "philly" sounding due to PA being 30 mins away from us...and most of the people around here are originally from the city. But those North J guys....I think they think they are from NY or something.
Like we don't say "joisey" over here EVER. We definitely talk funny, I'm not saying that. You know, the "how yooz guyz dooin" thing comes up once in a while. I did have a bit of an issue when I was a child. My dad has a strong philly accent...kinda like Rocky, but not dumb sounding. More like Tony Soprano. My whole family actually tawks likegat. LOL!! But when I was a kid...I sounded like a lil gangster. I remember asking the teacher to go to the bathroom. I'd raise my hand and say "yeah, I gottagotoda baff-room". Imagine that at 6 or 8. She'd say "Mr. Danzi, when you can spell the word bathroom correctly, I'll let you go." Baff-room....be ay eff eff- room...now Miss Johnson, I gottagotoda freakin' baffroom bad....please" while squeazing my lil thingie. LMAO!
One day the phone rings at my house, my mom picks it up upstairs, I pick it up downstairs at the same time. She picked up and said hello before I got the chance. I hear it's my teacher...so I'm a bit nervous, but I stay on the line. Mom didn't know I was there. I hear my teacher say "Mrs. Danzi, sorry to bother you but I wanted to talk to you a bit about Danny. Do you ever notice his speech sounding a bit like a little gangster?" Well my mom started cracking up and so did the teacher. She went on to say "he makes us laugh so hard, we almost feel bad correcting him. She told her that I said "Freakin" in class and though it wasn't a bad word, she knew what it really meant. They laughed about it some more which when I think about it now, was pretty awesome that the teacher would care enough to call, as well as share in a few laughs with my mom which acknowledging there is a problem, but not ridiculing me in the process. So, lil Danny D went to speech class. LOL! I'm glad I did. Sometimes I have to really be careful or I wind up talkinglikegiss or likegat. Ok, wait...I take all of this back....you were correct with what you typed. LMAO! As hard as I try, I still don't say things the right way.
I've been on an ebonics kick since I graduated high school. Can you imagine a dego baystid talking ebonics? Pure comedy...even worse if you hear my dad do it. :D LOL!
