Does location of a 64 bit VST for Sonar determine how it is handled?
I just got a copy of Omnisphere and am naturally excited. I started the installation and the default file location is Program Files (x86)/Steinberg/VstPlugins. I changed that to be Program Files (x86)/Vstplugins on my system without thinking clearly. That would be the place where 32 bit plugins reside. I am guessing Sonar should not care since the VST itself and not its location should determine if it was properly handled as 64 bit. Omnisphere is a 64 bit native plugin. Please let me know if I truly need not worry about the location or if I do need to worry. The installation procedure is hours long and I want to terminate it if I am doing something stupid. At this point I am halfway done so if it is not going to hurt me I will just continue.

You should see two folders; Program Files and Program Files (x86) For 64 bit the .dlls' should be located in the Program File folder. Mine for Omnisphere is in Program Files>Spectrasonics. If it doesn't show up when you scan VST Folders in Sonar then you can Edit>Preferences>File/VST Settings and go to Add...and point to the folder and run a scan. Should find it and be listed under Insert>Soft Synth/plug-ins/64bit. To confirm that it is the 64bit version - After you have it assigned click on the Logo ( top right-name with color triangle) and you should see the information and also how to check for update button. Loading all the Spectrasonics synths has been tricky everytime I've had to...they do have good support if needed. Hope this helps.

The endless installations continue but this should point me in the right direction. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

If you have a native 64 bit version you shouldnt put it in the place where you have the 32 bit plugins. Its best to keep the 32 and 64 bit locations independent. Also do not include the 32 bit path under the VST options or SONAR will scan both the 32 bit and 64 bit version and show two entries in the menu.

Do you see any problems if I just took a 64 bit native VST that was put in the 32 bit location by mistake and simply moved it to the correct folder by copying the .dll over?

In most cases that is fine. Some vendors may have information keyed to the install location or subfolders containing other related files so you have to take that into consideration.
