Does "show all tracks" in PRV not work?

Doesn't seem to work just wondering.
Thanks,

It does work but not in the way you may be expecting it to. It should be called "Show all tracks already visible in the PRV track pane". It is a way of turning on all the "show track" switches in that view  not a way of adding all tracks to the PRV.

    Hope that ramble makes sense.

Really?  I can't get to Sonar right now to check - but I thought the menu in X1's PRV worked the same as it always has--You use the menu and click to choose tracks, and all tracks in the project are listed.  You choose as many to be displayed as you want - great way to see how the notes from all instruments are interacting, for one thing.

"Show all tracks already visible..."--?  I don't get that.  They aren't visible until you ask for them to be---.  But all tracks that exist in the project can be displayed in PRV--Unless that was changed in X1--and I can't check at the moment.

This makes sense but it would be nice to have another option to load/show all tracks at once instead of having to individually check them all...nothing I can't live without though

TBH Randy I don't really know. It's not something I use, I normally select the tracks I want with the track selector thing. I did just try it to see what happened and it worked in that all tracks that had their data hidden were then switched "on" to show their data, but only if they are already visible in the track pane of the PRV.

Whether that's how it's supposed to work is another matter. Nothing would surprise me, I can't get my head round the snap to magnetism 'logic' yet.

So in my experience it sort of works of a fashion, just not how I would expect it to work though. Perhaps it's a bug?

You don't have to individually check them - Use the standard Windows way of choosing things.  Open the "pick tracks" menu under Tracks, then holding Shift+click to choose the first track, then the last track - they're all chosen.  Or if you need to exclude tracks, push Ctrl while clicking tracks.

FBB - "...I normally select the tracks I want with the track selector thing. I did just try it to see what happened and it worked in that all tracks that had their data hidden were then switched "on" to show their data, but only if they are already visible in the track pane of the PRV..."

Hmmm, I'm still not getting what you mean.  You're using "pick tracks,"- right?  You can choose any tracks you want in the project, as per my reply to Randy above - They don't have to be "already visible"---they aren't visible until you've chosen them.----

EDIT:  Look at the last few posts on this thread, Randy _ I misunderstood what you and FBB were talking about.  I was thinking only of the track menu in the PRV since I hardly ever open the Track Pane.  SO, I created confusion on this thread.  SOrry!

    @Randy.....

Sorry I'm not explaining myself very well.

Yes I use pick tracks which makes the tracks visible in the track pane of the PRV. Once they are visible in that pane then "Show all / Hide All" seems to work, in that selecting "Hide all" deselects the show/hide track data button of all the tracks (in the track pane) and hides the data in the main PRV edit pane.

Then "Show all" activates the Show/Hide data button and all data reappears in the main PRV pane. Whether that is how it is supposed to work, I have no idea, I don't use the PRV that much other than for tidying up my mess.

I guess someone such as yourself who uses that view more will know that.

Sorry if I'm still unclear, I know what I mean just having trouble conveying it.

Ah!  I totally get you now, FBB - Thanks for sticking with me.  We've been talking about two different things - I didn't understand that you were talking about the Track Pane which you can have displayed there on the right side.  Yes - you're completely right, you need to have the tracks chosen first in the display menu.  Then "show all" and "hide all" buttons work like they should - those are controls only for that Track Pane.

I was being dense because, and get this, - I never, literally never use that Track Pane.  For me it just takes up screen space, and I can do everything I need without it.  I just use the menu to choose tracks I want displayed, and usually I just have one track at a time open.  Later on in a project, I have them all displayed so I can do fine editing on how all the tracks are working together.

Mystery solved - Thanks for the new reply.  You've been explaining perfectly well, I was just out on a different train of thought.

Ah I see, I wasn't helping much though with descriptions such as "track selector thing"

It does seem a bit confusing to me though that "Show all tracks" only relates to that pane, perhaps "show all data" would be a better description.

As I said I don't use the PRV much but I do use the track pane hiding and showing tracks as I need them but it's mainly for my drum tracks so I don't get too confused - which I am easily.

You're right.  It would be a better design to have those two controls in the Track Pane itself, so people wouldn't be confused by them - they'd be right there on the thing they control, but not seen when they're not needed.

I do use the PRV a lot, and I'm just a menu man - open that drop down to ask for various tracks to be displayed.  It can be confusing to have a lot of tracks displayed at once though.  Here's a tip - when you have multiple tracks showing, when you click a note in a track, that track is then the active one, same as selecting a track in the Track Pane.  One thing that is helpful in that pane though, is the way you can prevent track editing to avoid working on an unintended track.  Even so - some how I get along without using that pane.  I remember I didn't even notice that pane for the first year of using Cakewalk.  That just set my work habit I guess.

    Anyway!

Oh, I'll have to remember that ....I guess I have been so frustrated by that process not working when selecting clips in track view I quit trying.
    Thanks guys,

Randy, I accidentally contributed some confusion to this thread.  Take a look at post #6 which I edited for you - I've been talking about the track menu in the PRV - I was slow to understand you guys were talking about the Track Pane and the "show all tracks" button is a control for that - Look at the last few posts, should straighten it out for you.
