Dog worries

I have 2 dogs.  One of them is a miniature pinscher.  I don't alter my dogs by clipping their ears or tails, so Scooby (the pinscher) has long ears and tail (see picture).

he gets dirt in his ears frequently because we leave them outside during the day while we're gone.  so we have to clean his ears frequently just to keep him healthy.  well, apparently we're not cleaning them often enough or something because it looks like he's got an infection in his ears.

so since he has an infection, I have to get him to the vet.  but also since he's got an infection in his ear, we decided it would be best to leave him in his carrier (his bed) all day until I can get him in.  so we left both dogs in because Scooby would be way too lonely without Zorro.  But my wife really can't get off from work because she's hourly and has a set schedule.  I'm salaried and have flex time, BUT I have a doctor appt today AND tomorrow!

I've got to try to work him into the vet between my doc appts.  plus it's probably going to cost us about $300 for the vet bill and medicine.

nothing to fix here - just complaining and sharing.

Beagle, I know the feeling.

We have two dogs. Love em. But they can be work (and expensive). With the Wheaten Terrier, I have spent more on medical bills than I have on myself. Similar problem. Ear infections. Have to do the same and clean his ears often. It took awhile but I seem to have the ear infection under control. The latest ailment is allergies. A lot of licking and scratching. I felt for him, so I recently decided to try this VERL allergy test and treatment plan. He is currently under that but it takes a few months to see whether it totally works.

Oh well, I wouldn't give them up because they are good dogs and fun to be around.

Broken pencils are pointless.

True story: We had a pet rat (the clean kind you buy from a pet store). He developed a large tumor and my (then) wife told me to take him to the vet and have him put to sleep. I plop him on the counter and the vet says, "Oh we can operate and probably save him". I say "How much?". The vet says "$150". I say "OK". My (then) wife says, upon hearing my good news reported to her, "You spent $150 on saving a $15 rat?".

Re:Dog worries 2011/08/10 11:02:42 (permalink)
I do have a concern about HOW to clean his ears, tho.  there's a lot of misinformation on the internet (imagine that!)

there are conflicting views about whether to use H2O2 to clean their ears or not.  when Scooby's ears get to bothering him like they have been the last few weeks, I usually take him to the groomers and let them give him a bath, clip his nails  and file them and clean his ears.

when I clean his ears, I just use some wipes we bought at the pet store - the pop up kind in a plastic container.  has some solution on it.

but when he gets really bad, I clean his ears with H2O2 and if it has started getting infected, I can see the bubbles form from the peroxide working on the infection.  there's information on the net both good and bad about that.  petmeds website says it's a good thing.  other places on the net say that H2O2 should never be used because a dog's ears don't drain well like a humans does.

I'll ask the vet when we go see him tomorrow.

After the vet visit she went shopping...forgot about the rat in the handbag...got to the checkout and opened the handbag to get her purse out, up popped Sparky, checkout girl freaked...

Reece,
Our two Shih Tzu's have problems with ear infections as well. Especially our older one. Most likely allergy problems. Our older one is allergic to a lot of things, one being humans (No joke). Fortunately, that one isn't too bad.

Your vet will most likely recommend using a special ear solution for dogs. I know we have to use a special solution for ours.

Your vet is likely to give you an ear solution for the infection..and cleaning. He may also give you a cone collar so that the dog will not be scratching at the ear all the time.

Just put that collar on the dog and watch the dog go all over the place backwards....the one we had here...a border collie ...had a couple of times an ear infection and that was what we had to put on the dog...it did work but still...

The space you have will always be exceeded in direct proportion to the amount of stuff you have...Thornton's Postulate.

I couldn't get him into the vet until today.  when I picked him up from home at 2:30 today his whole left side of his face was swollen and drooping.  he looked so bad!  got him to the vet and they had to anesthetize him to clean his ears and give him a few shots and a catheter.  I picked him up a few hours later and he looks a little better, but his left side is still drooping really badly.

he had a rash on his underside as well.  we're not sure what caused it, but he was in pretty bad shape.  the vet said he should start feeling better tomorrow and I bring him back in for a follow up on Tuesday.

$500.  ouch.  oh well.  He better start feeling better!

Beagle,

As anyone knows me will know I have six dogs. one is a Min Pin. They are absolutely adorable, But that sounds more like a reaction to something rather than an infection. and BTW I cant keep Maus (our Min) from digging or mousing either.

You might want to check into VPI pet insurance. It's the only way we have been able to manage the costs over the last 15 years.

Hey, Doc,
I agree and the vet said it could be due to an allergic reaction, but we don't know what from.  we've not changed anything we do or give him.  his diet is exactly the same, we've not changed anything in the back yard where they spend their days while we're at work.  so I don't know what it could have been that he got himself into.

and we've had to reinforce all of the wooden fence in the back yard with rocks and concrete just to keep him from digging under it.  he's definitely a "digger" but I think he'd be healthier if he wouldn't do that - but what can you do?  that's like telling the users in the forum upstairs to quit whining!

I might look into the insurance again.  I looked at it before but decided it was too expensive.

Beagle - maybe get him a "snood" which will keep his ears covered while he eats/plays etc.   We had an afghan hound who got her ears into everything - she had to wear it while eating especially.  A snood is a fabric tube sorta like a turtle neck that you put over dogs' heads to keep their ears out of stuff.

He's feeling MUCH better today!  not nearly as lethargic and the left side of his face isn't drooping as badly.  he's even playing with his toys this morning (he plays with his toys a LOT when he's feeling good!)
